Problem

Another OpenCode 2.x client (the OpenCode TUI, or opencode run --server <url> --session <id>) can send a prompt into a session T3 owns. T3 showed the reply in a "Background activity updated" turn, but not the prompt that caused it. So a shared session read as a list of answers with no questions.

Reproduced on main e4926868da against a real OpenCode 2.2.4 serve with a password, with T3's OpenCode provider pointed at it (Server URL + Server password):

  1. Send "Привет" from T3. It shows normally.
  2. Send "qwe!" into the same session from another client. T3 shows "Background activity updated" and the reply, but no "qwe!".

A second external prompt behaves the same. The dev log shows OpenCode started a turn on its own; asking for a continuation.

Change

OpenCode 2.x is handled by packages/provider-opencode/src/server/v2/adapter.ts. The issue points at the v1 adapter, but the bug is in v2. For an external prompt, OpenCode sends events in this order:

session.inbox.enqueued (user item) → session.execution.started → session.inbox.delivered → reply

The adapter only creates the continuation's wake at execution.started, so the enqueued prompt was dropped before anything could hold it.

  • Show the prompt. A user inbox item that arrives while no T3 turn exists is kept by inbox ID. So is any user item buffered inside a wake. When its session.inbox.delivered reaches the continuation turn, the prompt is shown as a user message and user_message turn item. T3's own prompts and steers (inbox IDs starting with msg_t3_) are never recorded as external, even when OpenCode admits one after its turn ended, so they are never shown twice. Cancelled items are dropped. Subagent sessions keep their existing prompt handling.
  • No duplicates. The message ID is derived from the inbox ID, which is OpenCode's history message ID. A later history snapshot therefore does not duplicate the prompt.
  • Rewind and fork. A continuation's native history boundary is whatever OpenCode queued first in that wake, the same mechanism a wake's first background report already uses. If an external prompt arrived before any report, the prompt is the boundary; if a report arrived first, the report stays the boundary. Rewinding or forking at that point now cuts OpenCode's history there. A prompt can set the boundary only for the first wake after it was queued, and a reconnect clears every pending prompt's claim, so a prompt whose start or delivery was lost (a Stop that dropped its wake, or an event-stream gap) cannot become the boundary of a later, unrelated continuation.

Scope and approval

Fixes pingdotgg/t3code#27807

Triaged via the automated issue flow.

Verification

  • Tests in apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/OpenCode2AdapterV2.test.ts. Each fails on the code before its fix and passes now:
    • shows a prompt another client sent into the session in its continuation turn. Fails on main with: expected [ 'assistant: Hello!' ] to deeply equal [ 'user: qwe!', 'assistant: Hello!' ].
    • reverts OpenCode at another client's prompt when rewinding its continuation. Without the boundary change, the rollback skips session.revert.stage at the prompt's message ID.
    • shows a second prompt another client sent while its continuation was pending. Without the buffered-item change: expected [ 'user_message: first?', … ] … - "user_message: second?".
    • reverts OpenCode at another client's prompt queued before a continuation's report. Before the ordering change, the revert went to msg_report instead of msg_external.
    • reverts a report's continuation at its report after a Stop dropped another client's prompt. Before the staleness guard, the revert went to the dropped msg_stale instead of msg_report.
    • reverts a report's continuation at its report after a reconnect lost another client's prompt start. Before the reconnect guard, the revert went to msg_stale instead of msg_report.
    • does not show T3's own prompt that OpenCode admitted after its turn ended. Without the msg_t3_ guard: expected [ 'mine' ] to deeply equal [].
  • Suites and checks. OpenCode2AdapterV2.test.ts and OpenCode2OrchestratorV2.integration.test.ts pass, 100/100 at the head of this branch. vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, and typecheck across 10 packages.
  • Event order. A real OpenCode 2.2.4 and 2.0.28 serve, and all 15 recorded OpenCode 2.0.18 fixtures, send session.inbox.enqueued → session.execution.started → session.inbox.delivered for a prompt from another client.
  • Runtime transcript, real OpenCode 2.2.4 serve plus the T3 dev server on this branch at b4b4887441:
    • T3 sent "Reply with just: anchor". Then opencode run --server … --session ses_… "Reply with just: external" from another client.
    • The thread then read: You: Reply with just: anchor → anchor → Background activity updated → You: "Reply with just: external" → external. The prompt shows once, and still once after a page reload.
    • OpenCode's message list stores that prompt as msg_18ebf5962001lf1iSjODkv4vka, the same ID as the event's inboxID.
    • "Edit from here" → "Revert and keep changes" on the external prompt rolled the thread back to anchor and put the prompt in the composer. OpenCode's message list then ended at the anchor reply: the external prompt and its reply were reverted in OpenCode too.
    • On main, the same flow shows Background activity updated → reply with no prompt.
  • Not verified:
    • Before/after screenshots (main vs 99f16804af, web) are attached to this comment rather than embedded here. No renderer code changes; the new message is an ordinary user message, shown by the existing user-message renderer on web, desktop and mobile.
    • The live transcript was not re-run on the later rewind-boundary commits 546fbf3391, 975a0cf343, 17066d1e49 and the msg_t3_ guard; their adapter tests cover that.
    • The mobile and desktop clients were not run.
  • Not covered by this change, unchanged from main:
    • When a T3 prompt takes over an execution another client already started, rewinding that T3 turn cuts at the T3 prompt, so the earlier external prompt stays in OpenCode history.
    • A prompt another client sends while a T3-started turn is already running.
    • A prompt sent after the continuation turn has started.
    • OpenCode 1.x, which never shows turns started outside T3.

Handing https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/27807 over to this PR. My parallel implementation stayed local and was never pushed.

I independently reproduced the missing root prompt through the OpenCode 2 HTTP/SSE path. On local commit 07d320734235d8424abd0e4b3d537b84f551055a, the isolated T3 server and Android 14 POCO F4 showed an external steer during a T3 turn, then two idle external prompts, each once before its reply. Read-only SQLite assertions confirmed user/provider attribution, correct run ownership, increasing item order and three completed runs. Both idle prompts remained after restarting the client.

That local commit passed vp run check:changed with 126 tests and typechecks across 10 packages, plus 9 OpenCode 2 orchestrator integration tests. The final adapter/replay run passed 109 tests after correcting three recorded outbound prompt IDs. These results and this recording are from my local implementation, not this PR's head. OpenCode was a recorded-protocol fixture; I did not verify a live 2.2.4 TUI or end-to-end rollback.

One edge case worth retaining is an external prompt enqueued before a synthetic subagent report in the same wake. Our regression caught the report incorrectly becoming the native rollback boundary. The reverse order, duplicate inbox events, and native-command echoes also have useful coverage. I have not run those cases against your branch.

Android recording of the local implementation, showing the active steer and two idle prompts arriving before their replies:

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 509276a

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This restores external-client prompts in OpenCode 2 session transcripts and aligns fork/rewind boundaries with those prompts. Delivery gating, duplicate prevention, and stale-boundary handling keep the change narrowly scoped.

Walkthrough

The OpenCode adapter now tracks prompts sent by other clients and emits delivered prompts as user messages and turn items. A leading external prompt can define the wake history boundary. Tests cover continuation history, multiple prompts, reconnect behavior, and rollback boundaries.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#27807] requires external OpenCode client prompts to appear in the T3 thread. The changed v2 adapter stores external session.inbox.enqueued user items, emits them on delivery as a user message and user_message turn item, and derives the message ID from the inbox ID to prevent history duplicates. The adapter excludes msg_t3_ prompts, drops cancelled items, and keeps subagent handling. The added tests cover prompt display, buffered prompts, rewind boundaries, stale prompts after Stop or reconnect, and T3-owned prompt exclusion. The reported OpenCode 2.2.4 transcript also confirms display after reload and rollback in OpenCode.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes in packages/provider-opencode/src/server/v2/adapter.ts directly support issue [#27807]. Prompt tracking and emission implement the requested display. Wake boundary changes support rewind and fork at the displayed prompt. Stale-prompt and reconnect handling prevents an undelivered prompt from changing an unrelated continuation. The test changes exercise these behaviors. No unrelated production change appears in the reviewed whole-PR summary.

Retain prompts delivered before wake creation.

OpenCode 2.0.28 can emit session.inbox.delivered before session.execution.started. This branch deletes the stored prompt while no T3 turn exists. The later wake cannot replay that delivery, so the continuation omits the user message and turn item.

Track delivery separately from enqueue. Keep the delivered prompt until runWake has an active turn, then emit it.

Not reproduced. I recorded the event stream of a real OpenCode 2.0.28 serve while three prompts were sent from another client (opencode run --server … --session …). All three arrived in the same order: session.inbox.enqueued → session.execution.started → session.inbox.delivered. OpenCode 2.2.4 does the same, and so do all 15 OpenCode 2.0.18 transcripts in apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/testkit/fixtures/opencode2_*.

So the delivery is always held in the wake that execution.started creates, and it is replayed into the continuation turn. That is the path the tests in this PR cover. No change.

@juliusmarminge You're right. My claim that OpenCode 2.0.28 delivers the prompt before session.execution.started was unsupported.

With the event order you recorded, onWake creates the wake before delivery. handleEvent then buffers the delivery, and runWake replays it after beginTurn installs the active turn. The supplied code handles that path.

I withdraw this finding. No change is needed.

  • fix(server): rewind another client's prompt queued before an OpenCode report546fbf3
  • fix(server): a dropped OpenCode prompt no longer moves a later continuation's rewind point975a0cf

Thanks for the handover. The edge case you flagged was real here, and it's fixed in 546fbf3391.

Prompt queued before a report. When another client's prompt was queued before a subagent report in the same wake, the report became the continuation's rewind boundary. Now an external prompt that arrives before any report is the boundary. If the report arrives first, the report stays the boundary.

Stale prompt. 975a0cf343 covers a follow-up to that fix. Say a prompt's delivery is lost because a Stop dropped its wake. Without this commit, a later continuation could pick that old prompt as its boundary. Rewinding that continuation would then revert OpenCode at the old message. Now a prompt can lead only the first wake after it was queued.

Each case has a regression test that fails on the commit before its fix.

Steering during a T3 turn. A prompt sent from another client while a T3-started turn is running is not shown by this PR. It is dropped as on main. Your local implementation covered that case, so it is a good follow-up.

  • After (this branch at 99f16804af, the first fix commit): the external prompt shows as a user message between "Background activity updated" and the reply. The "ok" turn above it was recorded before the fix, so it still has no prompt.

Before: main shows only Background activity updated and the reply

After: the external prompt shows as a user message before its reply

Deduplicate messages by ID, not rendered text.

A provider item can emit multiple turn_item.updated events for the same item as its text or status changes. Keep the existing turn-item text deduplication. Change only the message.updated assertion to deduplicate by message.id; otherwise two external prompts with identical text but different inbox-derived IDs can pass this test while producing two projected messages.

Exclude T3-owned inbox IDs from external-prompt tracking.

A prompt request can be accepted by OpenCode even when the client reports an error. The adapter then finishes the T3 turn, while the accepted prompt can still produce a later inbox event. The new branch records that msg_t3_turn_... or msg_t3_steer_... ID as external. A later delivery can emit the T3 prompt again, and an idle wake can use it as its continuation boundary.

  • fix(server): never show T3's own late-admitted OpenCode prompt as another client's509276a

@coderabbitai Applied the outside-diff finding "Exclude T3-owned inbox IDs from external-prompt tracking" in 509276a3fd. A root session's msg_t3_-prefixed user inbox item is no longer recorded as external. Subagent prompt handling is unchanged. The regression test does not show T3's own prompt that OpenCode admitted after its turn ended fails without the guard (expected [ 'mine' ] to deeply equal []).

@juliusmarminge Thanks for applying the guard in 509276a3fd. The reported change addresses the finding: root-session msg_t3_ inbox items are excluded from external-prompt tracking, while subagent prompt handling stays unchanged. The regression test covers admission after the T3 turn ends.
