Bottom of a stack: the fix that makes tt-background-agent pass is stacked on top of this PR.

Problem

Nothing in evals/ checks whether agents keep top-level threads, delegated tasks and native subagents apart. orchestration.ndjson has a few single cases, such as subagent-ask-no-new-threads and delegates-then-new-thread-with-model. But no case runs a task and a thread side by side, uses indirect thread wordings, has a child launch a thread, or treats "thread", "task" and "agent" as ordinary words in code. A copy change could mix up t3_thread_* and task_* and nothing would catch it.

The field evidence is mostly good behaviour. One month of one user's T3 threads (235 threads, 137 delegate_task calls, 156 native subagents) had 15 t3_thread_launch calls, and every one followed an explicit thread request. So most of these cases are regression guards. Building them turned up one real failure: asked to "spin up an agent in the background", Sonnet 5.5 starts Claude's native Agent with run_in_background:true. Claude Code's Agent description says agents run in the background by default, and T3's "Agent always with run_in_background:false" loses to it.

Change

  • cases/threads-vs-tasks.ndjson: 23 cases (17 guards, 5 controls, 1 bad), all on authored Acme data:
    • thread asks become threads, including indirect wordings ("a separate thread I can follow", "another thread and a PR", "a new thread with an agent", a "new chat" on another provider, another project, three at once);
    • task asks stay off threads (a background worker with a PR, "in the background" with and without the word "agent", "another agent in parallel");
    • a running task and a running thread side by side: stop one and keep the other, and ask about each one's status;
    • children don't launch threads unless their task says to;
    • controls where "thread pool", "task queue", "Stop task" and "run the tests in the background" are ordinary code work.
  • expect.newThreads counts the top-level threads an agent asks for, across t3_thread_launch calls and create_threads entries. Each value must match a different request, and nothing extra may be requested. Without it, one thread with its link printed three times passed the "three threads" case.
  • Runner defaults for launched threads. T3's default t3_thread_launch and create_threads results now give each thread its own id, and t3_thread_read on that id returns its title and brief. Before this, every launch returned one id, and reading it showed an unrelated thread. Codex agents then "verified", saw the wrong thread and launched again: 8 of 12 GPT samples asked for 5–6 threads on a 3-thread request.
  • A README section lists the cases, the results on main and one open wording question.

Scope and approval

Julius Marminge asked for evals on how agents distinguish threads from tasks and subagents. This PR changes only evals/. There is no product change, and CI only typechecks the eval package and runs the grader tests.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck and the run.test.ts grader tests pass. There are two new grader tests:
    • newThreads rejects one request, a request reused for two values, and an extra thread; it accepts a failed launch that was retried.
    • The thread defaults return distinct ids, and reading one returns its own brief.
  • Paid runs on main's text, 3 samples per case. 1/3 and 2/3 cells were extended to 6 samples, and I read every failing transcript.
Case groupOpus 5.5Sonnet 5.5GPT-6.1 SolGPT-6 Astra

tt-background-research-no-agent-word3/32/3–3/3 across runs3/33/3

A full run of these cases costs about $4.4 on Opus and $2.1 on Sonnet, including the Haiku shell simulator. GPT models go through the CLIProxyAPI provider and aren't priced here.

Audit fixes before these numbers.

  • One case required a t3_thread_read before a send. That's stronger than the text, and it's removed.
  • Prompts carried two hints that gave the answer away; they're removed.
  • One world contradicted its history; it's fixed.
  • Status case: on Codex, the link in the answer was flaky on main (Sol 3/6, Astra 4/6), while routing passed in every sample. The case now checks routing only, and thread-mention-without-link-after-read still covers links.

Left out on purpose.

  • One case was dropped because main's text doesn't decide it. The user asks to "ask the reviewer in thread <id> to re-check it", and that thread is a top-level thread the user opened.
  • Sol and Astra start a new delegate_task review in 6 of 6 samples. They read "Every new delegate review or re-check is a new delegate_task" as covering every re-check. Claude models send to the thread.
  • That's a wording question for maintainers, so it's noted in the README rather than kept as a case.

Limits. This is an API replay with a simulated shell and canned T3 results, so no child or thread actually runs. The cases measure routing choices, not delivered work.

Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol designed the cases independently. I merged their designs, and both reviewed the merged result; their findings are fixed here.

Prepared with Claude Opus 5.5 (orchestrator) and a GPT-6.1 Sol + Claude Opus 5.5 council via T3 Code, in Claude Code.

Walkthrough

The MCP tool-use evaluation adds simulated thread creation and readback, grading for expected thread requests, and 23 cases that distinguish top-level threads from delegated tasks and ordinary application requests.

Changes: Thread orchestration evaluation

Layer / File(s)Summary
Thread simulation and readback
evals/mcp-tool-use/run.ts, evals/mcp-tool-use/run.test.ts
The runner stores titles and briefs for simulated threads created by t3_thread_launch and create_threads. Reads return stored details for simulated IDs. Tests cover creation, distinct IDs, and readback.
Distinct thread request grading
evals/mcp-tool-use/run.ts, evals/mcp-tool-use/run.test.ts
McpToolUseExpect adds newThreads. The grader excludes failed calls, requires an exact request count, and matches each expected entry to a distinct request. Tests cover mixed creation calls, missing or combined briefs, duplicates, and excess requests.
Orchestration cases and usage notes
evals/mcp-tool-use/cases/threads-vs-tasks.ndjson, evals/mcp-tool-use/README.md
The cases cover thread requests, delegated work, lifecycle operations, child-context constraints, and requests that should not use orchestration tools. The README describes the cases, grading behavior, run command, and evaluation context.

The PR is mergeable with awareness that two evaluation cases can still pass without demonstrating the full requested behavior. These gaps affect confidence in the evals, not production routing.

Note

Written by gpt-6.1-sol on behalf of Maria

kept your implementation and all 23 cases, @gabrielelpidio. merged current main without rebasing, then pushed a367d12b42 on top.

  • string newThreads expectations now match the creation tool's actual brief field, so a title or a field from the other creation tool cannot hide missing work.
  • prompt-free simulated threads stay idle, with no run or synthetic user message.
  • moved the native-subagent harness filter into setup, required the stripe/backoff handoff briefs, checked all three returned thread links, and required a test shell command in the background-test control.
  • shortened the readme; historical model results remain in this pr. the background-agent routing fix remains separately stacked in #27139.

verification: both core regression checks fail against main aa11ef6783da; the added title/idle/wrong-field assertions also failed before their fixes. blacksmith vp run check:changed passes format, lint, both knip passes, eval typecheck, and all 411 grader tests. dry-run case construction passes for claude (23) and codex (22).

unverified: paid model replay, because this vm has no eval api keys; these evals simulate tools and do not execute real child work. all 31 ci checks pass on the final head; both independent reviewers approve it, macroscope approves, and all six original bot threads are addressed and resolved. cafe still reports STACK_LAND_REQUIRED, so stack integration remains a maintainer action. the background-test control checks the test command and routing, not actual background job execution.

Require the requested provider and model.

~muse also matches muse-wonder, and the check does not constrain modelSelection.instanceId. The simulator accepts either mismatch, so this case can pass without selecting Muse Wonder Full. Require instanceId: "muse" and model: "muse-wonder-full". (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve agent authorship in thread readback.

When the agent reads a thread it just created, this item identifies the agent’s brief as createdBy: "user". MCP-created threads and their user-role messages use createdBy: "agent" and creationSource: "mcp". Return that provenance for both the thread and its brief so the readback does not present agent-authored text as a human message. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reject a synchronous delegate.

A delegate_task call with isolation: "worktree" and mode: "wait" passes this case. In T3, that mode waits for the child, so the agent cannot answer the setup question while the PR work runs. Forbid mode: "wait", as the other background cases do. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

7Update the `expect` guard in the `tt-background-worker-pr-is-delegate` case to
8forbid `delegate_task` calls with `mode: "wait"`, preserving the required
9worktree isolation and rejection of thread-launch tools so the setup question
10can be answered while the delegated work runs.

Report each created thread’s selected provider and model.

If a create_threads entry selects another provider or model through target, this result still reports sample.base values. The simulator then tells the agent that its requested target was not used, even though each entry resolves its target independently. Derive these fields from each request’s resolved target, with the inherited values as the fallback. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Verified in a real dev environment

verified head a367d12b42d126235792aba4e2b5c77162a7e192 without changing code. this pr changes only the eval harness; it does not change production routing.

  • installed and ran github/main (6575ce32508b) in ../main first. main's grader silently accepts one launch against three newThreads expectations. the pr rejects that input, assigns distinct simulated ids, reads each thread's own title and brief, and keeps a prompt-free thread idle.
  • blacksmith: vp test run evals/mcp-tool-use/run.test.ts passed on main (409 tests) and the exact pr head (411 tests).
  • used playwright from the repo dependencies with /usr/bin/google-chrome. created projects through the web app pointing to the real checkouts. submitted real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns, with no replay provider, app mocks, fixtures or demo data. stopped main's server before running the pr with its own explicit .t3 home.
  • on both checkouts, the user request created exactly three top-level threads. actual provider events confirm three t3_thread_launch calls and three matching t3_thread_read calls. the child turns completed with their requested replies. opening the csv thread link showed CSV VERIFIED in the client.
  • nearby paths on the pr: a background request used async delegate_task with codex gpt-6.1-sol, returned its result to the parent, and created no extra top-level thread. an ordinary question about taskPrompt used a source read and answered without starting a task or thread.
  • separately, one paid replay of tt-three-new-threads-one-per-bug passed (1/1). that replay uses simulated tools, so the real app checks above are the integration evidence.

command transcript and selected actual provider events

main, with the same three requested briefs:

main: three real codex threads and matching readback

pr head:

pr: three real codex threads and matching readback

pr: real web submission, thread launches and readback

Not verified

native desktop/mobile clients, other providers, cross-provider routing, and the separately stacked background-agent wording fix were not exercised. the eval defaults remain approximate: readback marks briefs as user-authored, and batch results report the inherited provider/model rather than an explicit target. this pass verifies distinct ids, briefs, counts and live codex routing, not full simulator parity.

a broader nine-sample paid replay was stopped by timeout 600 after reporting two errored samples and two passes; it produced no complete batch report, so no batch pass is claimed. the live background parent turn also took 8m 47s before returning, although its child then completed and delivered its result. no performance improvement is claimed.
