Problem

On an iPhone Duo bent like a book, the thread's content and controls land in the fold:

  • With the thread list visible, the workspace sets the list column's width to the fold's leading edge (listPaneWidth = division.x). The detail column then starts inside the fold, its leading ~40pt covered by it, and its safe area doesn't include the fold. The transcript, the composer, and the navigation bar's leading full-screen button all start in the crease, where the button is hard to tap.
  • With the thread list hidden, the detail column spans the fold and transcript text runs straight across the crease, while the composer below it already stays on one side.

Reproduce: open a thread on an iPhone Duo (iOS 27.1+) and fold it half-open, with the thread list shown or hidden.

Apple's guidance treats this as a defect. Preparing your app for iPhone Duo asks you to "identify elements or controls in your views that appear in the fold, and are difficult to see or interact with." UIView.ReservedRegion says "when a division is active, content that crosses it is hard to read and use, so keep each view entirely on one side of the division." The HIG for iPhone Duo says split views built with standard components "adapt to reserved regions automatically, adjusting width and margins to adapt to the fold."

Change

  • createWorkspaceStackNavigator.ios.tsx: the native split's preferred primary width is now the fold's center (listPaneWidth + listPaneGap / 2) instead of its leading edge. UIKit then reserves the fold between the columns: on device the detail column starts at the fold's trailing edge and reports no reserved region, so the navigation bar, transcript and composer all clear it. The navigation bar is laid out by UIKit, so this is the only way to move its leading button; a fixed leading spacer in the bar has no effect, even at 150pt. This follows the HIG's advice to "favor small adjustments over rearrangement": the button keeps its position next to the list it controls.
  • reserved-regions.ts: a new deriveContentSideInsets keeps the transcript on one side of a full-height vertical division, and ThreadDetailScreen passes it to the feed instead of the bare safe area. That covers the hidden-list layout. deriveContentSideInsets and deriveBottomControlInsets share sideOfDivision. An interior division keeps content on its wider side. A division at a column edge insets that edge, so content stays clear even if a column is ever laid out with the fold inside it. The edges start from the safe area, so a fold the safe area already covers is not reserved twice.

These are one problem, the thread column's handling of the fold, so they ship together.

Scope and approval

A focused fix for a layout bug that Apple's iPhone Duo guidance identifies as a defect: content and controls in the thread column land in the fold. It adds no setting and does not change layouts without an active fold.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/mobile/src/lib: 58 files, 696 tests passed. reserved-regions.test.ts covers a fold in the middle of the column (wider side on either side), a fold covering a column's leading or trailing edge, a fold the safe area already covers, and a horizontal fold or bottom camera being ignored. Two earlier tests asserted that an edge division needs no inset; the device test below disproved that, so they now cover the real geometry.
  • vp run --filter ./apps/mobile typecheck, vp lint and vp fmt --check on the changed files: clean.
  • Tested locally on a physical iPhone Duo, half-open, with a development build, switching between main and this branch over Metro hot reload:
    • On main with the list visible, the detail column is 411pt wide with a division at x: 0, width: 39.8 and safeArea.left ≈ 0; the full-screen button, transcript and composer start inside the crease.
    • On this branch with the list visible, the detail column is 371pt wide, starts at the fold's trailing edge, and reports no reserved region; the button, transcript and composer all start past the crease, and the list's content ends before it.
    • On this branch with the list hidden, the transcript and composer stay on the leading side of the fold.
  • iPhone Duo simulator (Xcode 27.1), half-open (hinge 130°) with the thread list hidden, built with node scripts/mobile-showcase.ts --device iphone-duo-open --scene thread --keep-running:

Before: the message bubble and assistant text run across the fold while the composer stays left of it.

Before

After: the transcript wraps at the fold, aligned with the composer.

After

Not checked: the laptop pose (horizontal fold), pull request screens, and Android foldables, whose layout does not receive these iOS reserved regions.

Walkthrough

The PR derives thread content side insets from native layout metrics and applies them to the thread feed’s unavailable-content placeholder. It also updates bottom-control inset handling for edge divisions and changes the iOS workspace split host’s primary-width calculation.

Changes: Thread content side insets

Layer / File(s)Summary
Derive and apply division insets
apps/mobile/src/lib/reserved-regions.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/reserved-regions.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadDetailScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx
The inset helper clips full-height divisions to safe-area bounds and selects a side. ThreadDetailScreen passes the derived insets to ThreadFeed, whose unavailable-content placeholder uses them as side margins. Tests cover divisions, native-column edges, horizontal folds, and bottom occlusions. Bottom-control inset handling also applies the side-selection logic to edge divisions.

iOS workspace column width

Layer / File(s)Summary
Calculate split host primary width
apps/mobile/src/features/layout/createWorkspaceStackNavigator.ios.tsx
WorkspaceColumns adds half the list-pane gap to the list-pane width. The split host uses the calculated value for preferred width and sets maximum width to at least 380.

Verified in a real dev environment

No changed behavior could be exercised on this Linux Boat VM. This is an environment-blocked verification, not a passing runtime result.

Inspected the description, all three commit authors, complete four-file diff, discussion, reviews, and reported checks for head d53b7960c8d030d6ac51619cc94d36be305ac7aa. The PR is open, with no commits by @juliusmarminge or @t3dotgg. GitCafe maps it to https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/26923.

The changed flow is native iOS: open a thread on an iPhone Duo running iOS 27.1+, fold it half-open, and show/hide the thread list. It changes UIKit split-column widths and native reserved-region insets for the transcript and composer. The generic NativeLayoutObserver is a no-op; browser viewport emulation cannot exercise the native geometry.

Environment probe: Linux x86_64; neither xcrun nor xcodebuild is installed. T3 device discovery returned exactly: Agent device access is turned off for this environment.

No dev server was started, no provider turn was submitted, and no code was changed. No screenshots or recording were captured because the required native client was unavailable. At inspection time GitCafe reported 19 failed checks and 9 successful checks; these are reported CI states, not checks run by this verification.

Not verified

The original bug on github/main and the fix at the exact PR head remain unverified in a running native app. The main worktree/install and PR checkout/install/server steps were not performed because the required iOS runtime is unavailable. Real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns, fold-visible/hidden transcript wrapping, navigation button accessibility, composer placement, unfolding, horizontal-fold behavior, and Android behavior were not exercised.

Verification requires an accessible physical iPhone Duo or compatible iOS 27.1+ simulator on a macOS host. Use matching real project/thread/provider data on main and this head, compare both thread-list states while half-open, then check unfolding and composer input/send. The author-provided evidence in the description was not independently reproduced.

Verified on Android emulator (API 35) against a real dev server

Not performed. The verification brief explicitly requires stopping when the change is iOS-only. Inspection of the complete four-file diff and exact head d53b7960c8d030d6ac51619cc94d36be305ac7aa confirms that condition.

The split-column change is in createWorkspaceStackNavigator.ios.tsx. The shared transcript/composer inset changes consume native reserved-region metrics supplied by NativeLayoutObserver.ios.tsx; Android resolves NativeLayoutObserver.tsx, which returns null and never emits metrics. An Android emulator, including a foldable emulator, cannot exercise the changed iPhone Duo reserved-region behavior through this implementation. Injecting metrics would substitute mocked geometry for the required real client path.

Read the discussion and all three commit authors: the PR is open, and all commits are by chekdotdev, with none by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. GitCafe number is also 26923. No code, labels, or branches changed. No emulator, dev server, Metro, or provider turns were started; no runtime screenshots or recording exist. Reported GitCafe CI state is 19 failing, 9 successful, 0 pending; this is not independently executed verification.

Not verified

iOS cannot run here: this Linux VM cannot run the required iPhone Duo iOS 27.1+ native client or simulator. The original bug on main, fold-visible/hidden transcript layout, navigation controls, composer placement, unfolding, and horizontal folds remain unverified. The author's iOS evidence was not independently reproduced. Android app regressions were also not exercised because the brief's iOS-only stop condition applies.

Verification of the changed behavior requires an accessible iPhone Duo or compatible iOS simulator on a macOS host. Android CI or an ordinary Android transcript session would not prove this fix.

Merged current github/main into the contributor branch without rebasing and pushed c0f3ed1a5bbcf9039e2852192633a8f6cb4f3757 without force. Resolved the ThreadDetailScreen conflict by preserving main's workspace mutation provider and keyboard/question-feed behavior while keeping the fold-aware transcript insets. The contributor's unavailable-content placeholder fix is preserved. The PR remains five files, 112 additions and 27 deletions.

Blacksmith vp run check:changed refs/remotes/github/main passed formatting, lint, knip, mobile/scripts typechecks, all 11 reserved-region tests, and nine selected React Compiler checks. Two independent read-only reviews approved this head with no actionable findings.

Native iOS fold interactions remain unverified on this Linux VM; Chrome cannot exercise UIKit column placement or native reserved-region metrics. The author's device evidence was not independently reproduced. No dev servers were started.

Final CI: 20 successful checks, nine skipped, none failed or pending. GitHub reports MERGEABLE / CLEAN; the existing review thread is resolved. Native iOS verification remains the only verification gap.

Apply the side insets to unavailable content.

ThreadFeed returns ThreadFeedPlaceholder before it uses contentSideInsets when content is unavailable and no queued messages exist. That placeholder only applies horizontal padding, so its centered status text can cross the reserved division. Apply the same side constraints in that ThreadFeed branch.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @chekdotdev

Fixed in bef7db3cbc. The unavailable-content branch now wraps ThreadFeedPlaceholder in the same left/right content insets as the empty-feed placeholder, so its status text stays on one side of the fold.

@chekdotdev Thanks for fixing this in bef7db3cbc. Applying the same left and right content insets to the unavailable-content placeholder addresses this finding.

Verified in a real dev environment

No changed behavior could be exercised on this Linux VM. This is an unverifiable result, not runtime approval.

Read the description, complete four-file diff, discussion and reviews, and checked all four PR commit authors. The PR is open at d8734d8ebc4b32000be87bc343915c671cd718b5; none of its PR commits are authored by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. GitCafe number is also 26923. Fetched the exact GitHub PR head and inspected its native observer implementations.

Environment checks this turn:

text
1uname -s -> Linux
2command -v xcrun -> unavailable
3T3 device_list -> Agent device access is turned off for this environment.
4gh pr checks 26923 --repo pingdotgg/t3code -> 21 pass, 8 skipped, no failures or pending checks

These are environment and reported CI checks only. No tests were independently run. No code, branches or labels changed, and no dev server or provider turn was started. No runtime screenshots or recording exist to upload.

Not verified

The original bug on github/main and the fix on this exact head remain unverified. The main worktree/install and PR checkout/install/server steps were not performed because there is no accessible required native iOS runtime.

The split-width change is iOS-only. The transcript/composer changes consume native reserved-region metrics from NativeLayoutObserver.ios.tsx; the default observer used by Android returns null and emits no metrics. Chrome viewport emulation or a web Codex turn cannot exercise UIKit column placement or this native fold path. Injecting geometry would violate the no-mocks requirement.

Still required on an accessible physical iPhone Duo or compatible iOS 27.1+ simulator: reproduce on main, compare the exact PR head using matching real project/thread data and Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns, test the list shown and hidden while half-open, then test unfolding and composer input/send. Navigation button accessibility, horizontal folds, unavailable-content placeholder placement raised in review, and Android regressions also remain unverified. The author-provided captures were not independently reproduced.
