Follow-up to #26178, now merged; rebased onto main.

Problem

#26178 stops an untargeted pairing from adding its address as a route to an environment already saved on this client. A targeted pairing (expectedEnvironmentId set) is the legitimate "Add route" flow and skips that guard.

On mobile, the pairing form read that target from its routeFor route param. The form is reachable by deep link at connections/new and settings/environment-new, and only pairingUrl was gated to dev builds. So t3code://connections/new?routeFor=<saved env id> opened an ordinary-looking "Add environment" form. Any pairing code entered there ran as a targeted pairing. The attacker's server could then claim the saved environment's id, and its address became a route on that trusted environment. Dev builds were worse: &pairingUrl=…&autoConnect=1 paired without the user doing anything.

Fix

withoutPairingTarget removes routeFor from the pairing form routes in the app's getStateFromPath pipeline, so a link can never set it. That also covers the path where a link refills a form already open, because that reuses the parsed link's params. The in-app "Add route" button on an environment's settings page still passes routeFor through navigation.navigate, which never goes through link parsing. The dev auto-connect no longer passes a target, since its only input is a link.

Web and desktop don't have this problem. Their target comes from component state, set either by clicking "Add route" on a saved row or by choosing a machine from the linkable list. No URL feeds it.

The test parses both link paths with routeFor, then checks that the form params come out without it and that the dev auto-connect pairs untargeted.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 08e47c1

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Pairing deep links can no longer target an existing saved environment, while explicit in-app Add route navigation remains available. The change narrows link privileges without introducing new external operations or altering product defaults.

Walkthrough

Pairing now checks whether an address is saved for an environment when no expected environment ID is supplied. Mobile pairing links remove routeFor before auto-connect, which starts pairing with the URL alone.

Changes: Pairing address validation

Layer / File(s)Summary
Registry address check
packages/client-runtime/src/connection/registry.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threads-atoms.test.ts
The registry can reject registration when an environment ID is saved but the route address is not. Platform-managed environments are exempt, and registration checks the address under the environment lease.
Onboarding enforcement and validation
packages/client-runtime/src/connection/onboarding.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/connection/onboarding.test.ts
Onboarding checks the route before compatibility validation and bearer-session bootstrap when no expected environment ID is supplied. Registration repeats the check under the lease. Tests cover mismatched addresses, an exchange race, targeted routes, and platform-managed registrations.
Mobile pairing links
apps/mobile/src/App.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/connection/devAutoConnect.*, docs/user/remote-access.md
Navigation removes routeFor from pairing-form routes before auto-connect. Auto-connect pairs using the URL alone. Tests cover the affected links, and the guide describes the address restriction.

Pairing links are currently sanitized, but the test would miss a regression that restores targeted pairing from a link. This is a bounded coverage gap rather than a demonstrated blocker.

Explanation

The title is specific and matches the main change. It uses the conventional commit form and names the mobile pairing deep-link fix. The diff removes routeFor from pairing-form routes in the mobile link parser, which blocks a link from targeting a saved environment. The title is short and does not describe a file list. It does not cover the stacked client-runtime changes, but the title does not need to cover every detail.

Explanation

The description clearly explains the problem and the code change, including affected mobile deep links, preserved in-app targeting, and the security impact. It does not include the required Scope and approval section or a dedicated Verification section with focused test commands and observed results.

Resolution

Add a Scope and approval section with the triaged issue or explicit maintainer approval, or explain why this focused fix qualifies without one. Add a Verification section that lists the tests or manual checks run and their observed results, including any checks that were not run.

Test the production linking composition.

The test calls withoutPairingTarget directly. If App.tsx stops calling it, this test still passes while a link can preserve routeFor and open a targeted pairing flow. Move this assertion to the production linking pipeline. Assert the resulting navigation state, not callback wiring.
