Problem

ChatView kept a thread's browser panel tabs and floating browser in sync with its preview sessions through two effects. useAgentOpenedPreviews found browsers an agent revealed by diffing session snapshots in a third effect, keeping a per-thread baseline in a ref. All three ran again after every render that changed sessions, panel surfaces, or the active thread.

Change

  • previewStateStore now reports its own changes. onPreviewSessionsChanged fires when a thread's sessions or its list-loaded flag change. onServerTabsRevealed fires with server tabs that are freshly revealed. A tab counts as freshly revealed when it is new, or carries a new reveal request, after the first list has loaded. The first list is the baseline, so a reload never reopens previews the user dismissed. The listeners exist because the right-panel, mini-player, and settings stores cannot be imported from this store without an import cycle (noted in the code).
  • The new components/preview/agentOpenedPreviews.ts subscribes once at startup (startAppServices in appInit.tsx). It reconciles browser panel tabs, closes a floating browser whose session ended, and floats a revealed tab (or focuses its existing panel tab when the reveal is forced).
  • ChatView's two effects and the reveal effect in useAgentOpenedPreviews are deleted. That hook loses its previewState, serverBrowserAvailable, and panelSurfaces inputs.

What this improves

  • Removes 3 synchronizing effects. Panel tabs and the floating browser now change when the session data changes, instead of after a ChatView render.
  • ChatView no longer re-runs reconciliation on renders that only changed rightPanelState.surfaces or the active thread.
  • No bug fix is claimed.

Behavior changes

  • Reconciliation and reveals run for whichever thread's preview state changed, not only the one ChatView is showing. On web, previews only stream for the open thread, so nothing changes there. On desktop, previews for background threads keep syncing, so those threads now update their panel tabs too: a browser an agent reveals on a thread you aren't viewing is already shown when you open that thread. On main that reveal was dropped.
  • In environments without server-browser support, ChatView used to reconcile on mount even when no session had changed. That pruned browser tabs left over in persisted panel state after a reload. Now pruning only runs when that thread's preview sessions change, so a leftover tab stays until then.
  • No logging changes.

Kept: the two device effects in useAgentOpenedPreviews. Device sessions come from a separate stream, and a later change moves them.

Render scenarios: ChatView renders in the covered "mount thread", "switch thread", and "stream turn" scenarios, and this removes effects from it. The numbers are left to the coordinator.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/web/src/previewStateStore.test.ts apps/web/src/components/preview/agentOpenedPreviews.test.ts: 22 passed. New tests cover the reveal baseline, re-reveal only on a new request id, no reveals for client-opened or desktop tabs, reveal floating and focusing, and tab reconciliation waiting for the first server list.
  • vp run check:changed: lint, knip, and typecheck (34 packages) pass. Format was fixed afterwards. Tests: 2903 of 2904 passed. The one failure was MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx "settles when equally long messages…", a 15s timeout under machine load; it passes when run alone.
  • Render metrics: pending — the harness PR adds them.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Although titled as a refactor, this change moves preview synchronization into an app-lifetime service and changes user-visible browser tabs and floating previews from active-thread behavior to global, event-driven behavior. The cross-thread panel and reveal handling is broad enough to require human review.

Walkthrough

The change moves server-tab reveal handling and preview-session reconciliation from component effects to an app-started service. The preview state store now publishes session-change and server-tab-reveal notifications. Tests cover notification, reveal, and reconciliation behavior.

Changes: Server preview lifecycle

Layer / File(s)Summary
Detect and publish server preview changes
apps/web/src/previewStateStore.ts, apps/web/src/previewStateStore.test.ts
The preview state store detects newly revealed server tabs and publishes session changes. Server events, snapshots, and reconciliation use the server-specific update path. Tests cover reveal notifications.

The startup service handles server-tab reveals and follows preview-session changes. ChatView no longer reconciles browser surfaces or passes server-preview state to the hook. App initialization starts the service. Tests cover reveal behavior and session reconciliation.

Startup ordering races can prevent requested browser previews from appearing and may remove existing preview tabs; these should be fixed before merge.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is detailed and maps well to the template's sections, but it does not follow the required template headings and it has gaps. It has Problem, Change, and Verification sections. It has no 'Scope and approval' section and no link to a triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion, which the template requires for this kind of change. The Problem section states that no bug fix is claimed, so it does not describe a bug with expected behavior or reproduction steps. The Verification section lists focused test runs and results, and it discloses one unrelated failing test. It also says render metrics are pending. The author states the model used, which the template asks for. The description is largely complete on the technical content, but the approval linkage is missing and the Problem section does not fit the template's bug-oriented framing.

Resolution

Add a 'Scope and approval' section. Link the triaged issue or the discussion where a maintainer approved this direction and scope, and include the approval comment. If no prior approval exists, explain why this change qualifies for an exemption. The change is a refactor that the author says fixes no bug, so the approval path must be explicit. Rewrite the Problem section so it states the problem in a sentence or two, with expected behavior and any reproduction steps or environment. Keep the verification section, and state clearly which checks could not run. Note that the 'MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx' failure is unverified as unrelated. Mention whether the render metrics will be added before merge or in a follow-up PR.

apps/web/src/previewStateStore.ts:120-135 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Replay reveal metadata when the first list establishes the baseline.

If a forced requestReveal event arrives before the first preview list, the event stores the reveal metadata while listLoaded is false. freshlyRevealedServerTabs then returns no notification. The later list sets listLoaded to true but does not replay the stored reveal. The browser therefore does not open or focus the revealed tab unless another reveal event arrives.

Replay only reveal-bearing sessions that already existed before the baseline. Keep list-only sessions as the baseline.

apps/web/src/components/preview/agentOpenedPreviews.ts:18-60 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Defer preview coordination until environment configuration resolves.

readEnvironmentSupportsServerBrowser returns false when configuration is unresolved. revealServerTabs then drops the reveal. followPreviewSessions bypasses its listLoaded guard and passes the current sessions to reconcileBrowserSurfaces. When that state is empty, the reconciliation removes persisted browser panel tabs and can close the floating browser.

Configuration resolution does not replay either listener. Distinguish unresolved configuration from unsupported configuration at this coordinator, defer both operations while unresolved, and replay the pending reveal and latest preview state when configuration resolves. Discard them only after the configuration is known to be unsupported.
