perf(mobile): highlight code with native @pierre/highlights instead of Shiki#24544
Mobile highlighted code with Shiki's TextMate grammars, either on the native Oniguruma engine from react-native-shiki-engine or on Shiki's JS regex engine. Because it was slow, every caller was async, chunked by characters, and yielded a frame between batches. Code showed up plain and colored in later. To stay affordable, review diffs only loaded seven grammars and treated every other file as diff.
@pierre/highlights replaces those grammars with hand-written single-pass lexers, and web is moving to it in #23178. The package ships as WebAssembly, which Hermes can't run, so this PR compiles the package's own highlights.wasm to C with wasm2c and runs it in a small T3Highlights Expo module: Swift on iOS, Kotlin plus JNI on Android. JS gets back compact (endUtf16, tokenId) records and colors them from generated Pierre light and dark tables. Those are the same colors as web's diffs.
What changes for users
- The file viewer, review diffs, review-comment previews and the work log's script and REPL code highlight synchronously, so they paint colored on the first frame.
- Review diffs highlight every language highlights supports (81 lexers), not just TS/JS/JSON/YAML/bash.
- Mobile code uses the Pierre themes instead of GitHub's, matching web.
- ini, fish, prisma, regex and viml have no highlights lexer, so they now render as plain text.
Numbers
On an EAS iOS simulator (iPhone 17) running Release builds of main and this branch, I timed a temporary benchmark screen that calls each branch's real file-viewer highlight path. Each time runs from the call until the colored lines are ready. On main that includes Shiki's frame yields, because that's how long a user waits.
| Case | main: Shiki + native Oniguruma | This PR | Speedup |
|---|---|---|---|
| First call, 42-line TS (includes engine init) | 89 ms | 4.39 ms | 20Γ |
| First Python file, 77 lines (Shiki lazy-loads the grammar) | 20 ms | 0.89 ms | 22Γ |
| TS file, 680 lines (mean of 5) | 111 ms | 1.03 ms | 108Γ |
| TSX file, 3,930 lines (mean of 3) | 499 ms | 8.33 ms | 60Γ |
The new lexers also distinguish more token kinds: 21,860 tokens across 14 colors for the large file, against Shiki's 17,181 across 8.

How it fits together
modules/t3-highlights/Vendor/holds third-party and generated native code, as in t3-terminal: the wasm2c output for@pierre/highlights@0.2.0(Vendor/highlights), the matching wasm2c runtime from wabt 1.0.42 (Vendor/wasm2c), and simde 0.8.2 for the module's SIMD ops (Vendor/simde).cpp/holds only the module's own wrapper and its generated Unicode tables. It isn't in the repo-rootnative/because only mobile compiles it; web and desktop run the package's WebAssembly directly.cpp/t3_highlights.creproduces the package's JS glue: the control block, mode 3 line records, and the reset after a large input. It also implements the two identifier-class imports from generated Unicode tables.- The runtime uses malloc'd memory with explicit bounds checks and stack-depth counting. It installs no signal handlers, so it doesn't compete with crash reporters or ART.
- The C builds at
-O2even in Debug builds. scripts/generate-highlights.mtsregenerates the C, the runtime, the Unicode tables and the JS language and theme tables from the installed package.generate-highlights.test.tsfails if they drift, because token and language IDs are the native build's ABI.- If a binary lacks the module,
src/lib/highlights.tsfalls back to plain text instead of crashing. - Removed:
shiki,@shikijs/*,react-native-shiki-engine, the fbjni pin that existed only for it, and the incremental-snippet, engine-selection and frame-yield machinery.
This adds a native module, so it needs a new binary. The fingerprint changes on both platforms.
Verification
- Differential test: the native C build and the package's WebAssembly in V8 returned identical records on 96,055 inputs (161M records). The inputs covered every repo source file under its language, all 81 lexers fed foreign, truncated and byte-fuzzed input, and Unicode and CRLF edge cases. The run had no traps, and the deepest call stack was at most 20 frames.
- Builds: the module builds for arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a, x86 and x86_64 with 16 KB-aligned segments, and for iOS device and simulator.
- Unit tests:
highlights.test.tschecks the decoder and theme tables againstcodeToTokensfrom@pierre/highlightsin both schemes. The review-diff segmentation tests now run on the real lexer, and I mutation-checked them. - Checks:
vp run check:changedpasses, and so does the mobile suite (199 files). - On device: I ran dev builds on an iOS simulator and an Android emulator. Pull-request diffs (light and dark, TS and Markdown), the thread review sheet, the file viewer and the comment composer's preview are all highlighted. On Android,
libt3highlights.soloads with no errors in logcat. The benchmark numbers come from Release builds ofmainand this branch on an EAS iOS simulator, using a temporary screen that isn't part of this PR.

Approvability
Verdict: Needs Human Approval
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval β This PR replaces mobile syntax highlighting across existing surfaces with a new cross-platform native wasm2c integration and changes the shipped build/runtime path. It also changes Macroscope configuration and has an unresolved concrete iOS concurrency concern around process-global tokenizer state.

Walkthrough
The mobile app replaces Shiki-based highlighting with a shared synchronous API backed by a native WebAssembly highlighter on iOS and Android. Diff, source-file, review-comment, and Markdown views use the shared API. The change also removes the prior engine-selection paths and related configuration.

Make the tokenizer lock process-wide.
t3_highlights.h states that the tokenizer is "Not thread-safe: callers serialize access." The C state is process-global: the static instance, its linear memory, and the returned records pointer. lock is an instance property, so each T3HighlightsModule instance has its own NSLock. Expo creates one module instance per AppContext. Two runtimes can therefore call t3_highlights_tokenize at the same time, for example during a dev reload that overlaps with an old context. A concurrent call can then grow or free the shared wasm memory while the other call copies records.
Android already serializes globally through the @Synchronized singleton HighlightsNative. Make the iOS lock static so that both platforms follow the same rule.
