Problem

On mobile, opening Branches & worktrees before Git status loads can leave the new worktree's base set to main, even after status reports release/stable. Stale thread metadata can leave an old branch in the field instead. Creating the worktree then uses the wrong base or fails if that ref does not exist.

Change

Keep only the user's edit in state. Until the field is edited, derive its value from the current branch so a status response updates the default. Once edited, preserve the entered value, including an empty field.

Scope and approval

This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, under the exception in CONTRIBUTING.md: the sheet's default ignores Git status that arrives after it opens. It changes no product default and no other branch-selection flow. No issue or maintainer approval is claimed. It affects the shared iOS and Android sheet. Branch selection elsewhere is unchanged.

Verification

  • cd apps/mobile && pnpm exec vp test run --project react src/features/threads/git/GitBranchesSheet.test.tsx: base production source fails two cases by submitting main or stale metadata. Candidate passes all four, including edited and cleared input. No timers or polling. This re-adds the sheet test path that #22557 pruned; it now covers only the late-status default and its edit-preserving counterpart.
  • pnpm --filter @t3tools/mobile typecheck passes. Targeted pnpm exec vp lint and pnpm exec vp fmt --check pass on the sheet, test and mobile test configuration.
  • iOS 26.5 and Android 16.0, fresh isolated state, matching Debug native clients with production JavaScript: pause the owned backend while opening the sheet, then resume it. Base retains main; candidate uses release/stable. Both candidates create a worktree through the UI, and Git confirms its branch starts at the release/stable commit. An edited base also keeps its value after status resumes. Device runs and services were cleaned up.

Not checked:

  • Physical devices and distributed/store builds.

The base retains main alongside the checked-out release/stable branch.

iOS base retains main

Android base retains main

The candidate's untouched base follows the loaded branch.

iOS candidate uses release/stable

Android candidate uses release/stable

Edited bases remain entered: master on iOS and custom-base on Android.

iOS edited base shows master

Android edited base shows custom-base

The regression fails on the base and passes on the candidate.

Prior PRs: Jacob's open #20754 changes jj terminology in this sheet and keeps its one-time base initialization, so it does not fix this stale default; it also rewrites the same initializer lines, so whichever lands second needs a small rebase. Julius Marminge's #22980 and Alex's #22551 change this sheet's header and layout only. This patch reuses no code from them.

Walkthrough

GitBranchesSheet now derives its default worktree base branch from the current checkout branch, using "main" for a detached HEAD. Tests cover status updates, user-edited values, and empty-base behavior.

Changes: Worktree Base Branch Handling

Layer / File(s)Summary
Base branch fallback and tests
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/git/GitBranchesSheet.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/git/GitBranchesSheet.test.tsx, apps/mobile/vite.config.ts
The sheet derives the base branch from the current branch unless the user sets an override. The React test project includes tests for loaded checkout status, edited values, and empty-base creation behavior.

On a detached checkout, the worktree form may suggest an outdated base branch. The user can correct it, so this is a bounded issue to address or explicitly accept before merging.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The PR is a focused mobile bug fix, but it changes the default base branch used for untouched new-worktree creation when Git status loads asynchronously. That product-default change warrants human review despite the small, tested implementation.

@only21mil, your nullable override is already the smallest correct production fix: untouched bases follow loaded status, and explicit edits, including an empty field, persist. i kept the implementation and all contributor commits.

i merged current main into the writable head at 471b528ed5eb845f39319dd5c2f775597f309041, resolving the vite test-list conflict by preserving both additions. the resulting diff against main remains three files, with no extra production changes.

verification this run:

  • the existing regression tests fail twice with current main's sheet, submitting main or stale metadata. all four pass with this fix.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip checks, affected typechecks, and the four regression tests.
  • blacksmith also passed all 11 existing selected-thread git-action tests.
  • two independent read-only reviews found no issues at this head.

unverified: fresh native interaction and before/after captures. this vm has no attached android device or configured emulator; chrome cannot run this native sheet. the author's existing native evidence remains in the description. the local dev server was started and cleaned up.

ci checks have not yet reported for the updated head. the prior bot discussion contains a human-approval requirement for changing the untouched default; that decision remains with maria.

@only21mil, the detached-checkout finding is valid but pre-existing: main already uses gitStatus.data?.refName ?? selectedThread?.branch, so loaded refName: null falls through to stale thread metadata. this takeover preserves that fallback and fixes late status for named branches. distinguishing unloaded status from loaded detached status is a separate low-priority follow-up; i am recording it without expanding this fix.

all 28 checks now pass at 471b528ed5eb845f39319dd5c2f775597f309041. both independent reviews approved that head. fresh native verification remains unverified as described above; maria's approval of the default change is still needed.

Verified in a real dev environment

no changed behavior could be exercised in a running client on this linux boat vm. this is a verification limitation, not a passing result.

i inspected the description, complete diff, commit authors, discussion and reviews at head 471b528ed5eb845f39319dd5c2f775597f309041. the pr is open and has no pr commits by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. git.cafe maps it to https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/23251 and reports 28 successful checks, zero pending and zero failing. these do not prove runtime behavior.

the production change affects only the native mobile GitBranchesSheet, reached from the git overview's Branches & worktrees action. untouched worktree bases follow arriving branch status; explicit edits, including an empty field, remain overrides.

native prerequisite transcript from this run:

text
1T3 device_list: Agent device access is turned off for this environment.
2adb devices -l: List of devices attached (empty)
3command -v emulator: no executable
4command -v xcrun: no executable

Not verified

  • main reproduction and candidate verification of late git status with absent or stale thread metadata.
  • neighboring behavior: preserving edited bases and disabling creation after clearing the base.
  • native worktree creation, its actual starting commit, real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the mobile client, and fresh iOS/Android captures.

the mobile verification skill requires stopping when device access is unavailable and prohibits switching automation systems. chrome would not execute this native sheet. i did not install dependencies, create a main worktree, start a dev server, or substitute mocked tests or older captures for fresh evidence. no code or branch changes were made. the adb daemon started during discovery was stopped.

result: unverifiable. native device access and an android emulator/device or authorized ios host are needed to complete the before/after verification.

Verified on Android emulator (API 35) against a real dev server

verified head 471b528ed5eb845f39319dd5c2f775597f309041 on the t3 android emulator (sdk 35), with the matching native dev client from the shared cache, metro, and an isolated backend on port 13773. no mocks or demo data were used.

  • created a real git project with distinct main and release/stable commits. a real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn reported the release branch and commit in the mobile client.
  • opened branches & worktrees and delayed status by suspending only this task's backend. the untouched base updated from main to release/stable after status arrived. tapping create worktree created verify/android-untouched at 51e5c2ff65f3e695078d1740a22832883edb36da, exactly the release commit, rather than main's a23148a8fafb4888e0021d4a6f4c9ad4009b5a5b.
  • repeated from a fresh client cache with stale thread metadata: the untouched base changed from verify/android-edited to the actual release/mobile checkout. the matching screenshots below show the same form before and after the response.
  • explicitly entering main preserved that base and created verify/android-edited at the main commit. clearing the base kept it empty and disabled create worktree, including after backgrounding/foregrounding the app and changing the checkout.
  • submitted a second real gpt-6.1-sol turn from the android composer after moving worktrees. its response confirmed the new worktree directory and release/mobile branch.

no code changes or pushes were needed. the current pr reports 28 successful checks, zero failing and zero pending. these runtime checks are separate from ci.

the seven-second recording below (an animated copy for github) shows the untouched base changing from main to release/stable. playback and seeking were checked in the browser. the screenshots are full-device adb captures and were inspected before upload.

before delayed status: stale thread base

after delayed status: actual checkout base

untouched base follows delayed git status on android

Not verified

  • ios cannot run on this linux host.
  • a conclusive reproduction on current github/main. i briefly ran the pr's main base commit, but did not establish arrival of fresh status in that baseline, so those captures are not offered as regression proof.
  • the pre-existing detached-head fallback finding, physical devices, and store/release builds.
