fix(mobile): keep reduced-motion views visible and aligned#23234
With reduced motion, an entering animation can complete before its native view mounts, leaving composer model names transparent. Re-entering a settled thread can also leave its status label persistently overlapping Un-settle after the action width is measured.
Extend the existing Reanimated 4.7.1 patch to retain unapplied final frames and completion records across mounting and retargeting. A pending entry keeps the inserted frame as its current position and the latest Fabric layout as its target; using the target for both makes native mounting skip the position update. A completed entry keeps its queued final frame when the target changes, rebasing only animation-owned values onto the latest React props so queued frames do not restore stale colors or other unrelated props. On Android, retained updates request another UI frame while their native views are unmounted; application, cancellation, and teardown clear those updates. The composer-specific workaround is removed.
Scope and approval
A maintainer requested this fix and native simulator validation directly in T3 Code. The scope is restoring existing composer-label visibility and settled-pill alignment in the native entering-animation path. The before/after captures establish the failure and intended behavior. Changes are limited to the existing Reanimated dependency patch and its lockfile references. No separate public issue or discussion was opened: this is a focused repair of demonstrably broken existing behavior under the contribution guide’s obvious-bug exception. It restores text visibility and alignment through the same native entering-frame path; it introduces no new product behavior or defaults.
Verification
Rebased onto
e9d61252f6on 2026-10-24.vp run check:changedpassed patch usage, format, and all 33 affected package typechecks. The native patch is byte-identical to the previously validated4525f5c1version; a fresh install and full patch reverse/apply round trip passed.Full patch reverse/apply round trip matches the clean installed sources. Offline install and lockfile regeneration passed.
Android 17: captured the persistent 119-pixel overlap and traced the corrected native position. Eight traced re-entries and four clean re-entries per normal/reduced-motion setting passed, with held screens and pixel comparisons.
Original composer verification covered all seven themes in light and dark and normal/all-zero/animator-only-zero/transition-only-zero animation scales, restarting between configurations.
iPhone 18 Pro (iOS 27.0): rebuilt the native client; four reduced-motion and two normal-motion re-entries passed with identical settled-pill pixels. Confirmed the actual system setting before cold launches. Short, expanded, and empty composer states stayed usable, the expanded model name was visible, and Send disabled after clearing.
Clean Android binary before the retained-prop review follow-up, including the Android-only wake-up change: four reduced-motion and two normal-motion re-entries passed pixel checks. Short → expanded → empty composer cycles passed in both settings, including visible model names and disabled Send after clearing. After navigating away, a three-second idle probe recorded zero rendered frames and zero layout-animation pull events.
Retained-prop review follow-up: a temporary native fixture holds completed one-frame entering animations until a Fabric color/size/opacity update, comparing the previous and rebased paths side by side. Android 17 and iOS 27 passed color/border updates, custom final opacity/color/transform preservation, React opacity without animated opacity, and cancellation/remount. Both repeated captures were byte-identical. Android's three-second post-cancellation probe recorded zero rendered frames and zero layout-animation pulls. The fixture and native diagnostics are excluded from the PR.

Visual evidence
All replacement screenshots and recordings use repository showcase fixtures and the fictional Moonbase Terminal environment.
Android 17, T3 Code light, all system animation scales zero; same fixture thread, draft, dimensions, and composer source. The before capture uses the saved native binary from before the final-frame library fix.

Possibly related issues
- pingdotgg/t3code#13925 — The patch retains updates for unmounted Android views, which relates to the reported settled-thread re-entry behavior; the issue's text-mounting cost remains outside this change.
- pingdotgg/t3code#22751 — The patch adjusts entering-animation final views and opacity when an update is queued, but the issue's trigger is not established as the same.

A narrow iOS update sequence can leave a newly mounted view with the wrong appearance. Preserve synchronous props when rebasing the queued frame; the remaining risk is bounded.

Include Android’s Animator scale in the reduced-motion boundary.
useReducedMotion() only reads TRANSITION_ANIMATION_SCALE. When Android sets only ANIMATOR_DURATION_SCALE=0, reducedMotion remains false and the composer still assigns FadeIn.duration(160) while the label expands. This configuration disables Android Animator-based animations, so the existing guard can still leave the label’s entering fade enabled and preserve the transparent-label failure. Treat either animation scale as reduced motion before assigning entering.

@coderabbitai I checked this against the installed Reanimated implementation and tested the exact configuration on the Android emulator at 2fb259c. With animator_duration_scale=0, transition_animation_scale=1, and window_animation_scale=1, I restarted the app and exercised short draft → expanded long draft → empty. The expanded model name remained visible. Updated captures using fictional demo data are now in the PR description. In this configuration useReducedMotion() is false, so the existing FadeIn still runs; this is also the same entering path as before the fix.
The distinction is that this FadeIn uses Reanimated’s worklet withTiming path, whose ReduceMotion.System setting comes from NativeProxy.getIsReducedMotion() / TRANSITION_ANIMATION_SCALE. Android’s separate Animator duration scale does not disable that path. Reanimated’s ANIMATOR_DURATION_SCALE handling in css/DurationScale.kt belongs to its CSS animation path, not this entering FadeIn. The bug reproduced when Reanimated’s own reduced-motion setting was true, and the new guard bypasses the entering animation in that case.
I’m treating the proposed additional Animator-scale boundary as a false positive for this fix. Please reconsider/withdraw this finding based on the native verification and the animation path above.
@PixPMusic, you are correct. I withdraw this finding.
I incorrectly applied Android Animator duration-scale behavior to Reanimated’s worklet-based FadeIn. The separate CSS animation handling does not establish a defect in this entering animation.
Your implementation trace and native test address the configuration I flagged. The existing guard bypasses the entering animation when Reanimated reports reduced motion. No additional Animator-scale boundary is needed for this fix.
Thanks for the clarification.

| 5 | Learning: In apps/mobile/src/components/ComposerToolbar.tsx, ComposerInlineControl uses Reanimated’s worklet-based FadeIn entering animation. Its ReduceMotion.System behavior follows NativeProxy.getIsReducedMotion() / Android TRANSITION_ANIMATION_SCALE. Reanimated’s ANIMATOR_DURATION_SCALE handling in css/DurationScale.kt applies to its CSS animation path, not this entering FadeIn. Do not infer that setting only ANIMATOR_DURATION_SCALE=0 disables this worklet animation or requires an additional guard. |

A Fabric update that changes a non-layout prop such as backgroundColor after the entering animation completes but before its queued frame is applied is lost. This branch only updates animation.finalView; addOngoingAnimations later replaces its props with the stale updateMap_ newProps, and completion cleanup reconciles only layout metrics and opacity. Rebase the retained frame's props on finalView while preserving its animated values so the update reaches the native view.

| 39 | These are the steps that are needed for us to be able to consolidate our `LayoutAnimationsProxy` setup. This plan doesn't include enabling Shared Element Transitions by default. This will be the next step. At first we want to simply make sure the new Layout Animations engine is on par with the old one. |

| 68 | # Introduction |
| 69 | |
| 70 | 'next-frame' is a small tool intended to make it easier to create performant UIs in React Native. You can read more about the rationale behind it in the blog post introducing it. |
| 71 | |
| 72 | React Native and Javascript don't give us access to background threads without writing native code. This means that every computation we execute should ideally take less than 1/60th of a second so it doesn't interfere with animation performance or percieved responsiveness. |
| 73 | |
| 74 | Some computations inevitably take longer than this. When they do, React Native gives you a couple of options: |
| 75 | |
| 76 | 1. Port the operation to native code and run it in the background. |
| 77 | 2. Use the `InteractionManager` to run it after animations. |
| 78 | |
| 79 | `'next-frame'` is designed to be a third option. It allows you to break up an expensive computation into smaller parts and run just part of it on each repaint. This maintains the responsiveness of your UI while the computation is still ongoing. |
| 80 | |
| 81 | # Quick Start |
| 82 | |
| 83 | This quick start assumes that you're already familiar with the `async` and `await` keywords, which you can read up on here. Async and await are enabled by default in current versions of React Native, so this pattern works in RN out of the box. |
| 84 | |
| 85 | import nextFrame from 'next-frame'; |
| 86 | |
| 87 | let response = await fetch("https://emberall.com/user/1/recordings"); |
| 88 | let responseJSON = await response.json(); |
| 89 | |
| 90 | for (let recording of responseJSON.recordings) { |
| 91 | await nextFrame(); // The javascript will yield here and not resume execution until the next frame. |
| 92 | mergeRecordingToLocalDatabase(recording); |
| 93 | } |
| 94 | |
| 95 | For the previous example, let's assume that we get several hundred recordings back from the server as an array, and each one takes about 1/100th of a second to process. Normally processing all of them would take several seconds, and would cause unacceptable lag. However, using `await nextFrame()` we break up our computation and have much better perceived responsiveness. |
| 96 | |
| 97 | ## mapInFrames |
| 98 | |
| 99 | In the common case (like the one in the example above) that you just want to iterate over a collection and process one element per frame, we've included a convenience function `mapInFrames` that does exactly that. Here's the same example, rewritten with `mapInFrames`: |
| 100 | |
| 101 | import { mapInFrames } from 'next-frame'; |
| 102 | |
| 103 | let response = await fetch("https://emberall.com/user/1/recordings"); |
| 104 | let recordingsJSON = await response.json(); |
| 105 | |
| 106 | await mapInFrames(recordingJSON, mergeRecordingToLocalDatabase); |
| 107 | |
| 108 | Easy, and not imperative at all. 😃 |
| 109 | |
| 110 | # Under the hood |
| 111 | |
| 112 | `next-frame` is extremely simple (check out index.js if you don't believe me). It simply wraps Javascript's requestAnimationFrame in a Promise. |
| 113 | |
| 114 | # Other Uses |
| 115 | |
| 116 | This library was developed with React Native in mind and has only been tested there. However, it should work fine in the browser as well. |

| 274 | ## What is this? |
| 275 | |
| 276 | Layout animations have always been a challenge for web developers, especially when it comes to implementing advanced layout animations like shared-element transitions. |
| 277 | |
| 278 | To address this issue, Matt Perry invented Layout Projection, which is a Web animation technique making it possible to implement GPU-accelerated layout animations in the Web platform by calculating and applying appropriate CSS `transform` styles on elements in each animation frame. |
| 279 | |
| 280 | > Checkout Inside Framer Motion's Layout Animations - Matt Perry for more details. |
| 281 | |
| 282 | Matt Perry heavily applied the Layout Projection technique in Framer Motion, a well-known React animation library. Unfortunately, this left out web developers who don't use React. |
| 283 | |
| 284 | Therefore, in this project, we aim to offer a framework-agnostic implementation of Layout Projection with a variety of framework adapters, to enable all web developers to enhance their applications with layout animations! |

Bound retries for permanently unmounted tags.
When correctedTags[i] == -1, addOngoingAnimations() retains the entry and calls schedulePullOnNextFrame() on every pull. That callback schedules another render. If the tag never mounts while its animation remains active, the same branch can request UI work every frame. Add a per-entry or bounded retry guard. Clear the guard when the update is applied, cancelled, removed, or the surface is torn down.
Cancellation and teardown already clear updateMap_, so this is not a post-cancellation leak.

@coderabbitai I traced this against the installed Reanimated 4.7.1 and RN 0.88 implementations. The conditional loop is possible, but I found no supported lifecycle that leaves an eligible tag permanently absent:
preserveMountedTagscallsresolveView;-1means there is no native view object. A detached or offscreen view is not sufficient.- Entering starts from a concrete Fabric Insert that remains in the returned transaction. Flattening produces removal/deletion, whose paths erase or cancel the animation and queued update.
- Rootless prerender suspends mounting, so it does not create this entering insert. Stopping a surface removes it from the shadow-tree registry; the scheduled callback can no longer visit it and renew the loop.
An arbitrary retry count has no established native-mount scheduling bound. It could strand the one completed frame while its real Create/Insert batch is delayed—the liveness failure this patch repairs. Android cancellation/idle verification recorded zero subsequent layout-animation pulls, as well as zero rendered frames; I am not treating rendered-frame counts alone as proof about callbacks.
I am leaving the retry intact. Please identify a supported sequence that leaves the concrete insert permanently absent while keeping its animation eligible, or withdraw this finding. A permanently--1 mock by itself would not establish that lifecycle.
@PixPMusic I withdraw this finding. I identified a conditional retry loop, but I did not establish a supported sequence that leaves the native view permanently absent while its animation remains eligible. A permanently--1 mock would not establish that sequence.
Your lifecycle explanation addresses that gap. An arbitrary retry limit could prevent a retained final frame from being applied after a delayed mount. The reported zero layout-animation pulls also address callback activity, not just rendered frames.
No retry guard is warranted by the evidence presented.

Preserve synchronous props when rebasing the queued frame.
On iOS, a later React prop update can replace node->current with a target that lacks an earlier synchronous prop. The retarget branch then replaces updateValues.newProps with finalView plus enteringProps, which can drop that synchronous prop before the queued frame mounts.
Store all synchronous props separately from enteringProps, and merge them after rebasing the entering frame. Keep the new React target as the base so stale props are not replayed. This is limited to the queued, unmounted entering-animation path; Android accumulates these props in the light node.

@coderabbitai The set difference in the proposed sequence is real algebraically, but the claimed iOS ordering is not established by the native call paths.
In the non-backend path used here, ReanimatedModuleProxy::performOperations flushes layout-animation operations and executeLayoutAnimationsRequests() before applying synchronous updates. On iOS, RCTMountingManager::scheduleTransaction initiates mounting synchronously on the main queue; a reentrant transaction is deferred until the outer transaction finishes. The outer animation pull consumes the queued frame before the synchronous write, so the sequence “synchronous write → later Fabric retarget → consumption of that still-queued frame” needs an additional reachable ordering.
Bookkeeping can run for an absent native component, so absence alone is not my reason for disputing this. The question is how the iOS frame remains queued across those operations. The Android/iOS native fixture verified latest React colors/borders, custom final animation values, React opacity and cancellation/remount, but did not claim to reproduce this synchronous-write ordering.
Accumulating all synchronous values and overlaying them after every new React target can also preserve an obsolete value over a later accepted React update. I am not adding that blanket overlay without a concrete native failure and ownership rule. Please provide a supported iOS call sequence that leaves the completed frame queued through the synchronous write and later retarget, or withdraw this finding.
@PixPMusic I withdraw this finding. My analysis identified a possible prop-set difference, but did not establish a reachable iOS call sequence that exposes it.
The missing step is evidence that the completed frame remains queued through the synchronous write and a later Fabric retarget. An absent native component does not establish that ordering. The patch’s explicit unmounted-view retention branch is Android-only.
The proposed blanket overlay also lacked a rule for when a later React update supersedes a synchronous value. It is not justified by the evidence presented. No code change is needed for this finding.

@PixPMusic, i kept your commits and merged current main, then reduced the final diff to two mobile components (10 additions, 6 deletions). your diagnosis of the dropped reduced-motion entering frame is the basis of this change.
composer labels and floating status controls now skip their entering animations when reduced motion is enabled. floating status labels also skip exiting animations, so outgoing absolute labels cannot linger over replacements. normal-motion fades, status actions, picker actions, width calculations and timing stay unchanged.
i compared the original diff against this version. the shared reanimated c++ frame retention, scheduling, cleanup and prop-retargeting changes were replaced with component guards; the dependency patch and lockfile now match main. this comment supersedes the description's implementation and verification claims for the current head.
passed on blacksmith: vp run check:changed (format, lint, knip, mobile/scripts typechecks), plus 41 existing composer-theme/thread-state tests. two independent source reviews found no blocking issues.
unverified: native android/ios composer expansion, settled-pill alignment after re-entry, and normal-motion interactions. this vm has no connected device or emulator. the web dev server was started as requested, but chrome cannot exercise this native animation path. no new before/after evidence is claimed; the description's captures demonstrate the original implementation only. reduced-motion changes require restarting the app, matching reanimated's startup setting.
Could a maintainer take a look at this PR? I have also seen the Settled label overlapping the Un-settle action on mobile. Thanks for working on this!

Verified in a real dev environment
no changed behavior could be verified in this linux boat vm. i read the current diff, description, discussion and commit authors for head 91a0d7993ca5578defb474f0cff13c36794cab2f. the pr is open, and its listed commits are by pixpmusic and maria-rcks. git.cafe mirrors it as https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/23234.
the current diff changes only native mobile components: composer labels skip entering animations under reduced motion, and floating status controls and labels skip entering/exiting animations under reduced motion. the description's reanimated patch and captures belong to the previous implementation, as the earlier takeover comment explains.
runtime prerequisite checks this pass:
| 1 | $ timeout 30 adb devices -l |
| 2 | List of devices attached |
| 3 | (no devices) |
| 4 | |
| 5 | $ device_list |
| 6 | Agent device access is turned off for this environment. |
ci reports 30 successful checks with no pending or failing checks. that is not runtime proof. no code was changed, no branches were pushed, and no dev server was started. there are no new screenshots or recordings to attach.
Not verified
main reproduction, native android/ios composer short/expanded/empty cycles, model-label visibility, settled-pill alignment after navigating away and re-entering, picker and settle/un-settle actions, normal-motion animations, and theme changes remain unverified. no real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn was run through a native client.
the repository's mobile verification skill requires stopping verification when device tools or the selected device are unavailable. this environment has device access disabled and no adb device. browser viewport emulation cannot execute these react native/reanimated components, so a chrome/web run would not prove the changed behavior. native verification needs device access enabled and an android device/emulator; ios additionally needs an ios-capable host. result: unverifiable here, not verified or ready on runtime evidence.

Verified on Android emulator (API 35) against a real dev server
verified head 91a0d7993ca5578defb474f0cff13c36794cab2f on the t3 x86_64 android emulator, api 35, with kvm and the matching cached development client. metro served the actual native app; vp run dev --home-dir /home/user/t3code/.t3 served isolated backend state on port 13773. adb reverse connected the emulator to metro and the backend. the app paired successfully and used the real server project. two new threads completed real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local proxy. no mocks, showcase fixtures, or demo data were used.
with all three system animation scales at zero and a cold app restart, short → expanded → empty composer cycles passed. the expanded model name stayed visible, and clearing disabled send. repeated navigation away and re-entry kept the settled pill visible, with the label separated from un-settle. tapping un-settle removed the pill. the model picker opened with the correct model selected and returned to the draft. restoring all scales to one and restarting preserved the expanded label and settled-pill alignment; a second real turn completed normally.
before comparison used the pr's main base 3de45c6254345f968fbdc64db7b149bf4f429855, the same native fingerprint, backend, real thread, draft, theme and emulator. it reproduced the intermittent invisible model name and an invisible settled pill after re-entry. a later base re-entry rendered both, so this is an intermittent failure. the current github/main build required a different native client; the comparison below is explicitly the pr's main base, not current github/main. the precise overlapping-pill failure was not reproduced; the pr's pill remained aligned in the exercised entries.
before, reduced motion, main base:
main base: expanded composer model name and settled pill invisible
after, reduced motion, pr head, matching thread and draft:
pr head: expanded model name visible and settled pill aligned
android reduced-motion re-entry and empty, short, expanded composer cycle
normal motion: second real codex response, visible model name and aligned settled pill
inspected full screenshots and recording; uploaded video playback and seeking passed. no code changes or pushes were needed. ci currently reports 30 successful checks, zero pending and zero failing. no new automated checks were run in this verification-only pass.

ios cannot run on this linux host. current github/main native reproduction, the exact overlapping-pill failure, other themes, mixed animation-scale combinations, and other providers were not verified. web and desktop do not execute this native animation path.
