Healthy SSH environments fail readiness when HTTP responses take longer than one second. Use an eight-second network probe for initial connection and tunnel reuse. The initial overall deadline stays twenty seconds; reuse is capped at eight seconds. Remote loopback probes remain one second within their existing two-second reuse budget.

Fixes #7733. Original fix by Exotic209093, retained in #7815. Main is merged into the contributor branch; its stale-forward behavior still preserves the remote server.

Verification on head 82a6cf33e7:

  • Replaced the obsolete stale-tunnel test with two initial/reuse regressions that hold a healthy response across three seconds of virtual time. Both fail against main and pass with this change. The existing stale-forward and explicit-disconnect checks remain.
  • pnpm exec vp test run packages/ssh/src/tunnel.test.ts: 36 passed (35 before takeover). Scoped SSH typecheck, lint, formatting, and git diff --check pass.
  • A headless Linux proof ran the production environment manager against real local HTTP sockets. Initial HTTP 200 after 1.5 seconds and reuse HTTP 200 after six seconds succeeded with one forward and no remote stop. A refused listener triggered replacement after 8.022 seconds without a remote stop; explicit disconnect issued one remote stop.
text
1PASS initial: elapsed=1544ms requests=1 canceled=0 forwards=1 kills=0 remoteStops=0
2PASS reuse: elapsed=6012ms requests=1 canceled=0 forwards=1 kills=0 remoteStops=0
3PASS stale ECONNREFUSED: elapsed=8022ms forwards=2 kills=1 remoteStops=0
4PASS explicit disconnect: kills=2 remoteStops=1

SSH commands, forward handles, and remote launches were simulated in that proof. No physical high-RTT link or authenticated remote deployment was exercised. macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and Electron desktop were not verified. This changes readiness timing, with no visual UI change; screenshots do not apply.

One independent review round (Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol) found no code blockers. A stale forward can now take up to eight seconds to recover, compared with two previously. Leave unmerged pending human review of the timing defaults.

Tests: GPT-6-Astra; implementation: GPT-6.1-Sol; adversarial review: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol. Run through T3 Code using the Codex and Claude harnesses.

SSH readiness checks now use an 8-second timeout for tunnel probes. A regression test verifies that a stale tunnel is stopped and recreated after a readiness timeout.

Explanation

Issue #7733 requires SSH environments to connect when network latency exceeds one second while the tunnel and remote server remain healthy. tunnel.ts uses an 8-second timeout for desktop-side SSH probes and keeps the 20-second initial readiness budget. Reused tunnel checks also use the bounded 8-second timeout. Remote loopback probes remain at one second. tunnel.test.ts covers slow responses, repeated connections, tunnel reuse, and stale-tunnel recreation after probe timeout.

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #7733. Timeout separation, bounded stale-tunnel reuse checks, and regression tests directly support reliable SSH connections on high-latency links. No unrelated product behavior is identified.

P2 Badge Keep the remote loopback probe at its shorter timeout

Use a separate timeout for the remote-side loopback probe: this constant is substituted into T3_READY_PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS, while reuse calls wait_ready "2000". Because REMOTE_WAIT_READY_SCRIPT checks that 2-second deadline only before starting a request, an existing listener that accepts but does not complete its response can hold each reuse check for the full 8 seconds; some paths perform two checks, delaying environment startup by roughly 16 seconds before recovery. The higher bound should apply only to the desktop-to-tunnel request that crosses the high-RTT link.

Reuse probe exceeds overall timeout

Low Severity

Raising SSH_READY_PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS to 8s also feeds remote T3_READY_PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS, which is now larger than REMOTE_REUSE_READY_TIMEOUT_MS (2s). REMOTE_WAIT_READY_SCRIPT only checks the deadline between probes, so a hung loopback probe can run the full 8s and the 2s reuse budget no longer bounds those attempts.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable β€” The PR changes the default readiness timing for all SSH connection and tunnel-reuse flows, including increasing the reuse wait from 2 seconds to 20 seconds. Although the fix is localized and regression-tested, this product-default change warrants human review.

Synced from GitHub

Good catch β€” the shared constant also fed the remote-side reuse/launch scripts' own probe loop, which (unlike the Effect-based path) doesn't interrupt an in-flight request when its own deadline passes, so one slow attempt bounded by the new 8s could blow through the 2s reuse-check budget. Split it into two constants: SSH_READY_PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS stays 1s and is only used for the remote loopback probe now; a new SSH_TUNNEL_READY_PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS (8s) applies only to the desktop-side probe that actually crosses the SSH link at initial connect.

The 8-second per-probe inside the existing 20-second budget is the right shape for the initial connect, and the TestClock-based tests are good. One change needed:

The tunnel-reuse path also raises the overall budget from 2s to 20s. A stale tunnel (dead listener after sleep or a network change) returns ECONNREFUSED immediately, so the reuse check now spins for a full 20 seconds before recreating the tunnel, where today it recovers in 2. Cap the reuse overall at one slow probe (SSH_TUNNEL_READY_PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS, 8s) rather than the full connect budget, and add a test case with an immediately-refused probe that asserts recreation happens within that window.

@juliusmarminge The requested SSH tunnel reuse fix and regression test are now included in the latest commit (ed43c11), and CI is green. Could you please take another look?

Note

This comment is posted by Julius' dot

The description says the regression tests connect and reuse a tunnel with 1.5 second and six second responses. At ed43c11, tunnel.test.ts tests recovery from immediate HTTP failures, but I could not find those delayed successful response cases. The passing CI run does not demonstrate that part of the timing fix. Please link the current evidence for slow initial connections and tunnel reuse, or restore those focused checks and update the description, as required by the verification rule.

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch ssh-relay-remote-03. The focused fix and author commits are retained, with main merged, slow initial/reuse regressions rebuilt, and two independent local reviews complete. Publishing follow-up commits here; leaving unmerged for human review.

Published 82a6cf33e7. The two successful-response regressions now fail against main and pass here (36/36 tunnel tests); real local HTTP accepted 1.5s initial and 6s reuse responses. Reuse is bounded at 8s overall. The retained hung-probe regression pins that cap, and the real refused-listener proof recovered in 8.022s without stopping the remote server. SSH processes were simulated. The stale duplicate Deferred import is absent; scoped typecheck/lint pass. The body now separates these proofs and corrects the old 20s reuse claim. Two independent full-diff reviews found no code blockers; human timing approval remains.

Takeover complete at 82a6cf33e7. Current-head build, lint, and test jobs pass; skipped jobs remain skipped. No unresolved inline findings. One full independent review round with Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol found no code blockers. The PR body contains the current focused tests, headless proof, original-author credit, and platform limits.

The earlier human change request remains active: reuse is now capped at eight seconds and refused-listener recovery is verified, but that review must be cleared by a human. Leaving unmerged.
