Problem

Right-clicking a file chip in chat offers open and copy actions, but there is no way to jump to the file in the system file manager — you have to copy the full path and reveal it by hand.

Solution

Add a reveal item to the file chip context menu, worded per the environment's OS: Reveal in Finder (macOS), Reveal in File Explorer (Windows), and Reveal in Files (Linux, matching the wording the preview surface already uses). The action runs on the environment's machine through the existing shell.openInEditor RPC with a new optional reveal flag on LaunchEditorInput, handled by the file-manager editor: open -R on macOS, explorer /select, on Windows, and opening the containing directory with xdg-open on Linux, which has no portable "select this file" flag.

Because clients can talk to older servers, the server advertises support with a shellRevealInFileManager config flag; the menu item only shows when the connected server sets it and the file-manager editor is available, so older servers never receive the flag they would ignore.

Mobile is unchanged: revealing a file manager on the server machine has no sensible equivalent in the mobile client's long-press actions.

Before:

Before: context menu without reveal item

After:

After: context menu with Open in Zed and Reveal in Finder

Tested with launcher unit tests for all three platforms plus label tests, and verified end to end in the web app: the item opens Finder on the file on macOS with no error toast.

Model: Claude Fable 5 Harness: T3 Code

Note

Medium Risk Touches cross-platform process launching (PowerShell quoting, WSL UNC paths) and environment-scoped RPC routing; regressions could mis-target servers or silently omit file-manager actions, though coverage is extensive.

Overview Adds Reveal in Finder / File Explorer / Files to chat markdown file chips (and PR markdown that reuses ChatMarkdown), driven by a new optional reveal flag on LaunchEditorInput and server-advertised shellRevealInFileManager + shellRevealInFileManagerKind.

The server’s external launcher now discovers when file-manager reveal is actually runnable (PowerShell on Windows, interop on WSL, xdg-mime + a graphical session on Linux) and implements reveal per platform—open -R, PowerShell-encoded Explorer /select,"path", or opening the parent directory when selection isn’t portable. Server config exposes the capability with the same timeout pattern as editor discovery.

On the web, file open/reveal actions are scoped to the owning environment (threadRef.environmentId or an explicit environmentId on PR surfaces), gated on local-exec remote-open resolution, and hidden until the environment is resolved. Chips without any primary open action become a menu button; file-link CSS targets .chat-markdown-file-link so buttons match anchors. Shared editor/reveal labels are centralized for menus and the open-in picker.

Contracts add FileManagerRevealKind; tests cover launcher behavior (including a Windows PowerShell smoke test) and config advertisement.

Note

Add 'Reveal in file manager' action for chat file chips across macOS, Windows, and WSL

  • Server discovers the native file manager reveal capability per platform: open -R on macOS, PowerShell-encoded /select on Windows, and xdg-open fallback on Linux/WSL. The result is exposed via shellRevealInFileManager and shellRevealInFileManagerKind on ServerConfig, bounded by a 5s timeout.
  • Contracts add FileManagerRevealKind ("finder" | "file-explorer" | "files") and an optional reveal flag on LaunchEditorInput so clients can request file selection instead of opening.
  • Chat file chips in ChatMarkdown now gate editor and reveal actions on a resolved local-exec environment, show the preferred editor name in the menu label, and render as a <button> with a context menu when no primary open action is available.
  • PullRequestMarkdown and related PR components thread an explicit environmentId through to ChatMarkdown so capability checks have proper scope.
  • Risk: fileManagerCommandForPlatform in externalLauncher.ts can now return undefined on Linux without a graphical session or directory handler; buildAvailableEditors no longer assumes platform command presence, so any out-of-tree consumer expecting file-manager to always appear will see it omitted.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 47dd6

This PR adds cross-platform file-manager reveal actions to chat file chips, but the current head still has bounded merge-readiness risks involving capability-discovery timeouts, environment scoping, attachment behavior, and possible exposure of provider diagnostics to clients. These should be fixed or explicitly accepted by an owner before merge.

revealFileInFileManager and the reveal capability label use the globally active environmentId, so a file chip rendered for a thread on another environment sends the reveal RPC to the wrong server and presents that server’s platform label. Derive the effective environment from threadRef?.environmentId first, while still calling useActiveEnvironmentId() unconditionally to satisfy the Rules of Hooks.

Windows reveal breaks with spaces

Medium Severity

Windows reveal builds a single /select,${path} argument without quoting the path or enabling verbatim Windows spawn args. Through Node’s default argument escaping, explorer.exe often fails to parse paths that contain spaces and silently opens Documents instead of selecting the file. Spawn still succeeds, so the client shows no error toast.

Fixed in 9760c9fd4 — the Windows reveal now goes through Windows PowerShell 5.1's Start-Process with a verbatim argument string (the same pattern this file already uses for Windows browser launches), so explorer receives /select,"<path>" with only the path quoted and paths with spaces select correctly.

rechecked the exact current head. the prior wrong-environment, wsl routing, no-display linux, and powershell capability mismatches are fixed. two cross-platform launcher blockers remain below. all required ci checks pass and the pr is mergeable; the nonrequired vercel authorization check still fails.

also please encode the explicit environment-routing lesson in .macroscope/check-run-agents/ui-consistency.md so shared renderers cannot silently fall back to the global active environment again.

  • docs(macroscope): teach the UI review the environment-routing rule1f41727

Addressed the remaining review items:

  • bfcc4fee8 fixes both cross-platform launcher blockers: Windows/WSL reveals go through PowerShell 5.1's verbatim -ArgumentList so Explorer gets its raw /select,"<path>" switch even for spaced paths (with the capability gated on the PowerShell the reveal actually spawns), and Linux only advertises the file manager when xdg-mime reports a usable inode/directory handler, closing the silent no-op.
  • 1f417278b encodes the requested environment-routing lesson in .macroscope/check-run-agents/ui-consistency.md: shared renderers must resolve environment-scoped actions from explicit scope (bound thread or an environmentId prop) and suppress the action when no scope exists, never silently falling back to the globally active environment.

WSL reveal kind ignores Explorer command

Medium Severity

When WSL has explorer.exe but not interop PowerShell, and WSLg’s xdg-open is usable, fileManagerRevealKindForPlatform advertises files while resolveUsableFileManagerCommand still returns explorer.exe. Reveal then opens the parent folder in File Explorer, so the menu says Reveal in Files but the action never uses the Linux file manager that kind was chosen for.

UI consistency review: one finding on environment-scoped labeling in the shared markdown chip menu. The new reveal item itself is correctly scoped (explicit environmentId, server-config gating, suppressed when no scope is available); the adjacent "Open in …" label is not.

The file-manager wording here comes from navigator.platform (the viewing machine), but the menu item's RPC runs on environmentId's server — the same environment whose config drives revealInFileManagerLabel two lines below. When the preferred editor resolves to file-manager (the only editor a file-manager-only host advertises, or a previously persisted choice), a Mac client browsing a Linux environment renders "Open in Finder" directly above "Reveal in Files", naming a file manager the target machine does not have.

Consider keying the file-manager name off the environment's reported OS instead — e.g. an OS-keyed variant in editorLabels.ts next to revealInFileExplorerLabelForOs, fed from serverConfig.environment.platform.os (and falling back to the generic label when serverConfig is null). The other editor names are OS-independent, so they can keep using the current helper.

Medium Severity

preferredEditorMenuLabel builds the file-chip open item with navigator.platform, but openInPreferredEditor runs on the bound environment via RPC. When the preferred editor is file-manager and the client OS differs from the server (or WSL advertises Explorer), the menu can say Finder while the same menu’s reveal item correctly says Files, and the open action hits the server’s file manager.

Apply the same discovery timeout to the reveal-kind probe.

resolveAvailableEditorsForConfig bounds editor discovery at 5 seconds so server.getConfig cannot stall. The resolveFileManagerRevealKind call runs outside that bound. It performs its own command-availability lookups, and on the WSL fallback branch it can also run the xdg-mime probe.

The launcher's internal probe timeout limits the worst case, so this is not unbounded today. The bound is still implicit and depends on launcher internals. Wrapping the call keeps the timeout policy in one place.

Use the target environment platform for the file-manager label.

When "file-manager" is preferred, a macOS browser that renders a Linux environment shows Open in Finder at Line 1459. useOpenInPreferredEditor then sends the "file-manager" action to the Linux environmentId. Derive this label from the same server configuration used for the action, including the server-selected reveal kind when available. Add coverage where browser and target-environment platforms differ.

As per coding guidelines, “Capability gating, action dispatch, and user-facing labels must all read from the same environment's server config that the action will execute against.”

For bare filenames such as ChatView.tsx, “Reveal” sends the unresolved <cwd>/ChatView.tsx path to the file manager, even when the file actually lives at src/ChatView.tsx; the normal panel-open path performs a workspace lookup and opens the correct file. Make the reveal action use that same basename lookup or share the resolved path before calling revealFileInFileManager.

One finding on the new file-chip menu labels. The environment-scoping issue flagged in the previous run is resolved: preferredEditorMenuLabel and revealInFileManagerLabel now both derive from serverConfig for the same environmentId that the shell.openInEditor RPC targets, and every ChatMarkdown/PullRequestMarkdown call site supplies explicit scope (thread ref or environmentId prop), with reveal suppressed when scope is absent.

Suppress the editor action when no environment scope exists.

environmentId can be null, but this code always passes openInPreferredEditor. MarkdownFileLink then always shows and dispatches “Open in editor.”

Only provide onOpen when an environment scope exists. Make the menu omit that action when no callback exists. Keep copy actions available.

As per coding guidelines, “suppress environment-dependent actions when no scope exists, rather than falling back to the globally active environment.”

WSL open label mismatches Explorer

Medium Severity

On WSL, plain file-manager open still prefers explorer.exe whenever that bridge exists, but the chat chip open label is derived from shellRevealInFileManagerKind or the Linux OS fallback. When PowerShell is missing (kind files) or reveal is not advertised, the menu can say Open in Files while the RPC still launches File Explorer, so the label and the action disagree.

Reveal probe can stall config

Medium Severity

loadServerConfig wraps editor and remote-open discovery in a 5s timeout, but resolveFileManagerRevealKind runs afterward with no cap. On WSL hosts that fall back to the Linux file manager, that path re-runs the xdg-mime probe (up to 2s) on every config load even when the editor list is served from cache, so server.getConfig / config subscriptions can exceed the discovery budget the rest of this change protects.

One finding: hiding the editor action for remote environments leaves the file chip clickable but inert on surfaces that have no panel fallback. Details inline.

components/ChatMarkdown.tsx:1769

Dropping onOpen for non-local-exec environments leaves the chip with no click handler at all on surfaces that lack the panel fallback: handleOpenInFilePreview forwards to handleOpenInEditor whenever threadRef or workspaceRelativePath is missing, and that now returns early when onOpen is undefined. So a chip in a pull request panel (never has threadRef) or a non-workspace absolute path in a thread renders with the full link affordance (anchor, hover, path tooltip) and does nothing when clicked, with no toast — previously it at least reported a failure.

Elsewhere the app keeps this action working for remote environments instead of removing it: OpenInPicker routes remote-links through buildRemoteOpenUrl + openRemoteEditorUrl and only disables the control for remote-unavailable. Consider gating just onReveal (which genuinely needs a local server-side file manager) on canUseShellActions and sending onOpen through the same remote-links deep-link path, or at minimum surfacing a failure toast, so the chip never presents itself as clickable while doing nothing.

canOpenInPanel tests workspaceRelativePath !== null, but handleOpenInFilePreview (line 1291) bails on any falsy value and forwards to handleOpenInEditor, which now returns early when onOpen is undefined. A workspace-root link written with a trailing separator (e.g. [repo](/workspace/repo/)) yields workspaceRelativePath === "", so on a surface where the shell actions are suppressed (non-local-exec environment) the chip still renders the full link affordance — anchor, cursor-pointer, hover background — and clicking it does nothing. Now that onOpen is optional, this fall-through can leave the chip inert. For an .html/.htm link (so onOpenInBrowser is defined) whose workspaceRelativePath is null — an absolute path outside the workspace — in an environment where shell actions are suppressed: onOpen is undefined, this branch is skipped because only .pdf opens in the browser by default, and handleOpenInFilePreview forwards to handleOpenInEditor, which now returns early. hasPrimaryAction is still true, so the chip renders the full link affordance (anchor, cursor-pointer, hover, focus ring, path tooltip) and activation — mouse or keyboard — does nothing.

Consider letting the browser action take the click when it is the only primary action available:

Suggest replacing the body with return getLocalFileManagerName(platform); and importing that helper instead of the two platform predicates.

Do not expose raw provider failure details without a public-error contract.

ProviderUploadFeedbackError.cause uses Schema.Defect, so nested provider diagnostics can cross the WebSocket boundary. Return a public-safe error payload and keep the raw provider error in server logs. Update the focused test to assert that the RPC error does not contain "private provider detail".

One consistency finding on the new non-interactive chip variant: its label color no longer picks up the contrast-adjusted foreground that the anchor chip gets from index.css.

One finding on the new no-primary-action chip branch in ChatMarkdown.tsx: the <button> fallback loses the anchor chip's text selectability. Everything else in scope (the index.css selector widened to cover both elements, editorLabels reusing getLocalFileManagerName, the label/RPC environment scoping, and the OpenInPicker label extraction) is consistent.

The chip is rendered with selectable, but Chromium/WebKit UA stylesheets apply -webkit-user-select: none to button, so this fallback chip's label cannot be selected or dragged from, unlike the <a> branch and the surrounding markdown prose. That matters here because .chat-markdown's copy handler works from a DOM selection over the prose, so the chip visually drops out of a paragraph selection in this surface.

Shell actions miss known environment

Medium Severity

ChatMarkdown now resolves shell scope only from threadRef or an explicit environmentId prop, with no other fallback. Pull request surfaces were updated to pass that prop, but ProposedPlanCard and MessagesTimeline still omit it even though they already have the owning environment. When threadRef is absent, open and reveal stay hidden despite a known local-exec environment.
