React Native's iOS WebSocket is SocketRocket, which never negotiates permessage-deflate. The server offers compression (perMessageDeflate: true), but every frame to an iPhone still arrives uncompressed. Android already compresses: OkHttp sends the extension on every handshake.

Fix

  • A local Expo module, apps/mobile/modules/t3-web-socket, dials through URLSessionWebSocketTask, which offers permessage-deflate on every handshake.
  • A small WebSocketLike wrapper gives Effect's socket layer what it needs on iOS:
    • each socket reports its end once, with the server's close code and reason
    • writes after close are dropped, as browsers do
    • disposing the layer finalizes open sockets
  • Dev clients built without the module keep using the global WebSocket.
  • Android is unchanged.

Scope and approval

Maintainer-authored. It fixes the triaged bug #21183 and replaces #24931 at the maintainers' direction. Layer 2 of 2, on #32287.

Measurements

Messages from server to phone, from a TCP tap, on a pool iPhone 18 Pro running iOS 27.2 with a dev client built on EAS:

sessionmessageswireplain
pair, thread list, Replay turn16770.4 KB592.7 KB
auto-reconnect after a server restart11453.1 KB410.5 KB
wss over Tailscale Serve (messages ≥ 2 KiB only)3319.1 KB211.9 KB

Every upgrade, over ws and over wss, offered and got Sec-WebSocket-Extensions: permessage-deflate. Earlier measurements put an over-cap shell snapshot at 1.37 MB uncompressed versus 88 KB, and a typical replay at 54 KB versus 7 KB.

Not verified: the T3 Connect relay, a physical iPhone, and a Release build. Binary frames and the cancel path for oversized messages have unit coverage only.

This replaces #24931 by @only21mil, which reached the same URLSession approach and whose 1005/1006 close handling and protocolClasses = [] this keeps. It builds on #4794 by @t3dotgg, which built the first version of the module, and #4705, which enabled compression on the server. The diagnosis and device captures in #21183 are by @1kaahu.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at ab4a66b

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — iOS sockets switch to a native transport that negotiates traffic compression while preserving the existing Effect socket interface. Other platforms and older native clients retain their current transport; no data-storage or access-policy changes are introduced.

Walkthrough

The change adds an Apple Expo module backed by URLSessionWebSocketTask, an iOS adapter for Effect sockets, and runtime selection of that adapter. The adapter uses the global WebSocket layer when the native module is unavailable.

Changes: iOS Native WebSocket

Layer / File(s)Summary
Register and initialize the native module
apps/mobile/modules/t3-web-socket/expo-module.config.json, apps/mobile/modules/t3-web-socket/ios/T3WebSocket.podspec, apps/mobile/modules/t3-web-socket/ios/T3WebSocketModule.swift
Registers T3WebSocketModule for Apple and adds its CocoaPods specification. The module sets up connection tracking, bridge functions, and a URLSession configured for WebSocket tasks.
Handle WebSocket events and completion
apps/mobile/modules/t3-web-socket/ios/T3WebSocketModule.swift
The module receives text and binary messages, emits connection events, records failures, and finishes each connection once with close details.
Connect the adapter to the mobile runtime
apps/mobile/src/native/nativeWebSocket.ios.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/nativeWebSocket.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/runtime.ts, apps/mobile/src/native/nativeWebSocket.ios.test.ts
Adds the native adapter and routes module events to sockets by connection ID. The runtime uses the exported constructor layer, which falls back to the global WebSocket layer if the native module is unavailable. Tests cover socket state, event delivery, listener behavior, disposal, and close errors.

Explanation

The title "feat(mobile): iOS socket compresses traffic" matches the main change. The PR adds a local Expo module that uses URLSessionWebSocketTask, which offers permessage-deflate on iOS. The title is a conventional commit, short, and specific. It names the platform, the component, and the effect. It omits the mechanism, which is acceptable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the problem (SocketRocket never negotiates permessage-deflate, so iPhone frames arrive uncompressed), the change (local Expo module on URLSessionWebSocketTask, WebSocketLike wrapper, fallback for dev clients without the module), scope and approval (links to triaged issue #21183 and the maintainer direction), and verification (wire/plain measurements, a device and OS, screenshots, and explicit unverified areas). It follows the template's required sections. Two gaps remain. The Scope section cites a maintainer-direction statement and layer dependency, but does not include the approval comment itself. The Verification section reports measurements and unit coverage but does not list the exact tests run with pass results. The description also includes a "Built by" attribution line that the template does not require. These gaps are non-critical, so the check passes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #21183 requires that the iOS client offer permessage-deflate on the WebSocket upgrade and receive compressed frames. The PR adds T3WebSocketModule (apps/mobile/modules/t3-web-socket/ios/T3WebSocketModule.swift), which connects through URLSessionWebSocketTask. That API offers permessage-deflate on each handshake. apps/mobile/src/native/nativeWebSocket.ios.ts routes the runtime's WebSocket layer to this module when the module is present. apps/mobile/src/lib/runtime.ts now uses NativeWebSocket.layer. The PR description reports TCP-tap measurements on an iOS 27.2 device. Every ws and wss upgrade offered and received Sec-WebSocket-Extensions: permessage-deflate. Server-to-phone wire sizes fell well below plain sizes (for example, 70.4 KB wire versus 592.7 KB plain for the pair, thread list, and Replay turn). This matches the issue's requested comparison of upgrade headers and wire size. The new nativeWebSocket.ios.test.ts covers the adapter's connection, frame, close, and disposal behavior. It does not assert the extension header. The header result rests on the device measurements reported in the PR, not on an automated test. The PR also states that the T3 Connect relay, a physical iPhone, and a Release build were not verified. No non-coding requirement is in the linked issue.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed files serve the iOS WebSocket replacement described in #21183. The Expo module config, podspec, and Swift module provide the URLSessionWebSocketTask transport. The nativeWebSocket.ios.ts adapter maps the native transport to Effect's WebSocketLike contract. The close-code handling (1005/1006, one-shot close reporting), writes after close being dropped, and disposal finalizing open sockets are required so Effect's socket layer behaves correctly on the native transport. The nativeWebSocket.ts change exports the global-WebSocket fallback layer for non-module builds. The runtime.ts change selects the layer. The 128 MiB maximum message size in the Swift module is a transport setting needed for large snapshots (the PR cites a 1.37 MB shell snapshot) that the previous global WebSocket path carried. The nativeWebSocket.ios.test.ts tests support the adapter. No file in the diff changes Android behavior, server code, or unrelated features. The PR description states Android is unchanged. No demonstrated unrelated change was found.

Dispatch of close events can lose the CLOSED state for a throwing listener.

handleClose sets readyState and unregisters the connection before it dispatches. This order is correct. But #dispatch runs listeners without isolation. If one close listener throws, Sockets.dispose (Lines 164-167) aborts its loop. The remaining sockets then stay open natively and never receive handleClose.

Wrap each socket.close(1001) and handleClose call in dispose with a try/finally, or iterate over a copy of the values so that one failing socket does not block the others.
