Problem

When an agent's current preview tab closes, its next preview_snapshot (or any preview call) without a tabId fails with Preview tab tab_… was not found for snapshot. Omit tabId to use the current tab, or call preview_open. The agent never passed that tabId. Every later call without a tabId keeps targeting the dead tab, even while another of the agent's tabs is open.

Reproduced on main 202d5b5616 with the dev server and an OpenCode agent: preview_open → t3_preview_close → preview_snapshot {} twice. The stored tool call input is {}, and both calls fail as above. With a second tab still open, both snapshots fail the same way.

Two broker behaviours caused it. A successful close returns no tabId, so the broker recorded the closed tab as the agent's current tab, even when a different tab was closed. A current tab that vanished another way (the user closing it, the idle sweep) stayed current forever, and the host's not-found error was reported with that remembered tabId.

Change

All changes are in PreviewAutomationBroker.invoke, through one guarded helper (rememberCurrentTab) shared with the existing success path:

  • A successful close never makes the closed tab current. If it closed the current tab, the agent has no current tab, the same state a tabId: null status result already leaves.
  • When the caller omitted tabId and the host reports the remembered tab missing, the broker forgets that tab and fails with the existing no-tab message: No active preview tab was found for <op>. Call preview_open first. The failed request is not retried on another tab.
  • Both updates keep the existing connection and sequence guards. The not-found update also applies only while the missing tab is still current, so a late reply cannot clear a tab a newer call selected.
  • An explicit stale tabId keeps today's error.

No contract, wire or persisted-state change.

Verification

Focused tests in apps/server/src/mcp/PreviewAutomationBroker.test.ts, each failing on main or on the previous head and passing here:

  • forgets a current tab that closed elsewhere instead of naming it: on main, expected No active preview tab was found for snapshot. Call preview_open first., received Preview tab tab-1 was not found for snapshot. Omit tabId to use the current tab, or call preview_open.
  • closing the current tab leaves implicit calls to the remaining tab: fails on main (the snapshot is routed to the closed tab).
  • closing another tab keeps the current tab: fails on main (the closed tab becomes current).
  • a late tab-not-found reply keeps a tab another call made current: without the guard, expected tab-b, received host-default.

vp test run on the broker, mcp/toolkits/preview, mcp/toolkits/previewControls and preview/ServerBrowser tests: 5 files, 93 tests passed. apps/server typecheck is clean.

Not checked: desktop-hosted tabs, which reach the broker through the same code path, and providers other than OpenCode. The fix is provider-independent broker code.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at ebe166c

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Closed or missing preview tabs no longer remain the agent's current target. The change is limited to guarded, in-memory tab tracking, with explicit targeting preserved and no automatic retry of browser actions.

Walkthrough

The broker now guards updates to a thread’s assigned preview tab. It handles implicit tab-not-found errors and close results without retaining a closed tab as current. New tests cover tab lifecycle behavior and out-of-order responses.

The broker conditionally updates the assigned tab based on connection, queue, sequence, and tab identity. It clears implicitly selected tabs after tab-not-found errors and clears closed tabs. Tests cover closed-tab snapshots, closing current and other tabs, and delayed responses.

Explanation

[#31913] The broker clears a closed or missing current tab and gives an actionable preview_open recovery message. Tests cover external closure, closing either of two tabs, and a late not-found response. Explicit stale tab IDs retain the existing error. The available evidence does not establish whether a snapshot request for a tab that exists but cannot be automated explains that state and provides a recovery step.

Resolution

Provide focused source or automated test evidence for the snapshot response when a tab exists but cannot be automated.

Await the connection milestone instead of Effect.yieldNow.

connectTabHost forks the host stream, then yields once and assumes the host is registered. The first broker.invoke fails with PreviewAutomationNoAvailableHostError if acquireConnection has not finished by then. acquireConnection calls random.uuidV4() and Queue.offer, and nothing here guarantees both finish in a single yield. This makes the three tests that use the helper timing-dependent.

requestsFrom already accepts an onConnected callback. The last test in this file uses a Deferred named connected for the same purpose. Complete a Deferred from onConnected and await it here.

♻️ Proposed change

diff
1- yield* Effect.yieldNow;
2+ yield* Deferred.await(connected);

Create connected with Deferred.make<void>() before requestsFrom. Pass an onConnected callback that completes it. The Deferred import already exists in this file.

As per path instructions, changed tests must follow docs/internals/testing.md, which requires tests to "await a specific event or milestone" and not rely on yields, sleeps, or polling.

  • test(server): wait for the preview test host's connected event, not a yieldebe166c

@coderabbitai Thanks.

  • Host registration in the new tests: ebe166c1d8 replaces the single Effect.yieldNow in connectTabHost with a Deferred that completes on the host's connected event, so the three tests no longer depend on scheduling.
  • Linked-issue check: this PR fixes the reproduced case in #31913, a closed or missing current tab that keeps being targeted and named. Tabs that exist but are hosted on the desktop runtime and cannot be driven from this server are a separate behaviour. preview_open already reports that case explicitly, and it is out of scope here.

@juliusmarminge Thanks for the clarification.

  • connectTabHost now waits for the host’s connected event through a Deferred. I did not run the tests.
  • I agree that desktop-hosted tabs are separate from this PR’s reproduced case. preview_open has an explicit error for attempts to reuse a desktop tab, with test coverage.

The saved linked-issue check remains inconclusive for snapshot errors on desktop-hosted tabs. The preview_open test does not establish that snapshot calls explain the state and provide a recovery step. Please verify that behavior with a focused snapshot test and retry the linked-issue check; this can happen outside this PR.

Would you like a follow-up issue to track that verification?

Refs pingdotgg/t3code#31927; Wladefant/superboard#1778 #1798 #1899 — separate exact-head browser-tab custody review (6 Nov 2026 UTC)

Verdict: APPROVE for the source change at exact head ebe166c1d874339d8fad0a53984118d01bd6fc76; no demonstrated P1/P2 in the two-file patch. This is a nonauthor, source-level review of the original author's branch, not permission to merge, replace an existing fleet route, migrate a live session or claim operator-browser acceptance.

Problem/implementation: An agent can retain a selected tab ID after that tab closes elsewhere or via an explicit close, causing future implicit snapshots to target an unavailable tab. The change factors state updates into rememberCurrentTab, bounds them to matching client connection/queue and monotonic request sequence, and uses an exact replacing-tab comparison when clearing an assignment. A successful close clears the current tab only if it closed that current ID; closing another tab retains the current one. An implicit PreviewAutomationTabNotFoundError removes the unusable stored tab ID and strips that implicit ID from the surfaced error, but fails the request once without retrying a potentially mutating action or silently selecting a different tab. Explicit-tab failures remain explicit. Later stale failure responses cannot erase newer tab selection. Unchanged updateCurrentTab === false callers retain their nonmutating-observer semantics.

Regression evidence actually inspected: The four new original test scenarios exercise externally closed current tab, closing current tab while another remains, closing a noncurrent tab and a late tab-not-found after a newer selection. The normal admitted CI #42201741210 completed SUCCESS on synthetic merge f42805c3b0af0bb8e8f154c22cfa17a1b91c488a, containing the exact head. I independently read Test Server 2 job #127838426224 logs: changed src/mcp/PreviewAutomationBroker.test.ts 30/30 PASS, 0 fail. The 17-job inventory reports eight server shards, Lint, Build/Typecheck, Test and Check SUCCESS; Rust, Release Smoke, Mobile Native Static Analysis and Test Web SKIPPED, not passing. This is a bounded source+CI verdict. No native Chromium installation, target-profile consent, browser restart or operator-session acceptance was witnessed here.

Ownership/merge: The upstream author juliusmarminge retains all source/branch files; upstream maintainers retain merge and release; Superboard #1778 retains comparative browser-route and host consent gates. The same-family temporary review allowance under #1899 applies, but this is not a source merge/installed revision. No source, CI, browser, session, provider or deployment actions were performed by this reviewer.
