Problem

Removing a secret provider left every reference to it dangling. Those fields read as unset but still showed the raw provider id, and the remove dialog only gave a generic warning without saying what used the provider.

Change

  • The server unsets references to a removed provider in the same settings write that drops it (withoutRemovedSecretProviderReferences in settingsSecrets.ts, applied in updateAndPersistSettings), so every client and agent path gets it. A credential field becomes empty; a provider environment variable that held the reference is removed, matching what the env editor does when a value is cleared. References to other providers are untouched.
  • The remove dialog lists the fields that read from the provider and says they will be unset. With nothing using it, it keeps a simple confirmation.
  • Mobile has no secret provider management, so it needs no change.

Before / after

BeforeAfter
Before: generic warning, nothing listedAfter: the fields that will be unset

Verification

  • serverSettings.test.ts: "removing a secret provider unsets every field that read from it" covers env vars, single and per-host source control tokens, a usage limit key and an EAS token, and checks another provider's references stay. Fails on main.
  • SecretsSettings.logic.test.ts: table test for the listing helper.
  • Ran the app with T3CODE_FEATURE_SECRETS=1 against seeded worktree state; after removing, settings.json had the env var row gone and the tokens empty.
  • vp run check:changed passes.

Removing a secret provider while a patch echoes its credential as SECRET_REDACTED leaves a dangling credential in the persisted settings. withoutRemovedSecretProviderReferences runs before persistSettingsSecrets restores echoed references, so it sees only the marker and cannot clear the reference; resolve echoed references before this cleanup.

Fixed in 8788c6e13ac: echoed SECRET_REDACTED markers are restored to their references before the cleanup, so a removed provider's reference is cleared. The removal test now echoes the usage limit key as the marker in the same patch; it fails without the fix.

The commit addresses the issue. I couldn't verify it on the current branch, which appears to be at 033bc1f.

The PR head is now 8788c6e13ac, which contains the fix; the mirror had not caught up when you checked.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval β€” Removing a secret provider now permanently clears dependent credential references and environment-variable entries, with an affected-fields confirmation and stronger authorization. Human confirmation is needed that losing the previous reconnect-by-readding behavior is intentional.

Match Remove to the new permission requirement.

With AuthProvidersManageScope but not AuthSettingsWriteScope, Remove is available, but confirmation closes the dialog and the settings hook rejects the patch. Require both grants for Remove. Keep add and edit available with provider-management permission alone.

Include Simlock host tokens in the removal confirmation.

When a Simlock host’s agentToken references the provider, removal clears the token but secretProviderUses omits it. The dialog can therefore say nothing reads from the provider. Include Simlock host secret fields in the settings selection and traversal.

Walkthrough

Removing a secret provider now clears its references from settings before secret persistence. The settings UI identifies references and displays them in the removal confirmation.

Changes: Secret provider removal

Layer / File(s)Summary
Clear references during settings updates

Settings updates restore echoed secret references and clear references to removed providers before secret persistence. Managed variable comparison uses structural value equality. Scope checks and tests cover provider removal, including retained references and active runtime-mode ceilings.
Show provider uses before removal
apps/web/src/components/settings/SecretsSettings.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/SecretsSettings.logic.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/SecretsSettings.tsx
The UI finds provider references across settings and lists them in the removal confirmation. The message states that referenced variables will be unset and that the secrets remain untouched.

Check for an own provider entry.

If the provider ID is constructor or toString, removing it leaves an ordinary secretProviders object whose prototype still has that property. The in check then reports that the provider remains, so the helper leaves its references in place. These IDs satisfy SecretProviderId. Use Object.hasOwn(next.secretProviders, id) and add one such ID to the removal test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Clear removed references after managed-provider vetting.

When maxRuntimeMode is set, vetEnvironment can restore a removed provider’s environment reference from stored settings. The reference can then remain in settings.json. Run cleanup again after vetting, and add a focused test for this policy case.

Fixed in a4746c0cae2: the cleanup now runs after both vetting steps, just before persistence. Adding the test also exposed that vetting compared environment values by identity, so a re-decoded secret reference read as an edit to a managed variable and the save was refused; it now compares by value. The runtime-ceiling test now removes a provider whose reference sits in a hidden variable; it fails without the fix.

Require authorization for fields cleared by provider removal.

A provider-only patch requires only AuthProvidersManageScope. It can also clear source-control and EAS token references, which normally require AuthSettingsWriteScope. Re-adding the provider does not restore those references.

Require settings-write authority when removal clears those fields, or define an explicit authorization rule for the cascade.

Fixed in bcb7fccde04: a settings patch that removes a secret provider now also requires settings write, since the removal clears settings fields that read from it. Adding a provider still needs only provider management. RpcAuthorization's provider-only test now expects the removal to be denied without settings write; it fails without the fix.

@juliusmarminge Verified in bcb7fccde04: removing a secret provider requires both AuthProvidersManageScope and AuthSettingsWriteScope. Adding a provider still requires only provider management.

The authorization test checks that removal is denied without settings write. I did not run the test.
