perf(mobile): thread list resumes from the saved cache after iOS kills the app#30732

iOS often kills the app in the background. On the next launch, mobile downloaded the full thread list again, even when its saved copy was only a few events behind. On weak wifi, the user waited for that download before the list was live.

Now the saved thread list carries a small note: which server version and filters produced it, and when the server last sent a full list. If the note matches and is under 12 h old, mobile resumes from the saved cursor and gets only the missing events. If not, it downloads the full list as before. When the gap is too large or too old, the server sends a full list by itself. A reconnect to an upgraded server also reloads the full list. Items left over from an old connection are dropped.

Stacked on #28487. This branch contains its commits, so review only the last 4 commits plus a merge of main. Merge #28487 first.

Credit: the idea and the first 3 commits are from @emmems in #30317 (author kept). We opened our own PR because:

  • It is about half the size: about 500 added lines in 7 files, against about 1,000 on top of #28487.
  • It does not open a second socket in parallel. That replacement connect only had a 15 s timeout and not the 75 s sync budget, and on a thin link it uses the same bandwidth as the probe. #30317 also gave no measurements for it.
  • One rule decides every resume, so a retried resume does not force a full download.
  • It fixes one bug: after a cache resume, thread families, older threads, and search stayed blocked (generation stayed 0).

Bench: this uses the #28487 bad-wifi bench: a real server on a copy of a dev database, the real client-runtime code, a 300 ms round trip, 1.3 Mbit/s, random 500 ms stalls, and 6 sessions. I added one new case, a cold relaunch: the app is killed with a saved list, the server gets 5 changes, the app opens again, and the timer stops when the list is live with the last change. Medians from 2 runs per build, run in reverse order the second time:

Pathmain#28487#28487 + this PR
Cold relaunch to a live list6185 / 5692 ms3603 / 3880 ms3178 / 2931 ms
Full list downloads per relaunch110
Cold connect4878 / 3762 ms2941 / 2771 ms2548 / 2411 ms
Reconnect after a drop6171 / 5937 ms2644 / 2306 ms2426 / 2318 ms
List resync after background9282 / 8037 ms4083 / 3597 ms3995 / 3994 ms

Together the two PRs make a cold relaunch about 2x faster than main. This PR alone saves 0.4–0.9 s, and it does not download the full list again. The test database is small (29 threads), so the gain grows with a bigger thread list. The other paths do not change with this PR, and their differences are within noise on this shared machine.

Proof: new tests for each resume case, the stale session, and the server upgrade. Each test fails when its guard is removed. 800/800 client-runtime state tests pass, and vp run check:changed passes.

Walkthrough

Shell cache records now carry an optional vouch. Shell synchronization uses the vouch’s omission key, server version, and timestamp to determine whether to resume from cached state or load an HTTP snapshot.

Changes: Shell Cache and Synchronization

Layer / File(s)Summary
Shell cache vouch and persistence
packages/client-runtime/src/platform/orchestrationCache.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/platform/persistence.ts, apps/mobile/src/connection/environment-cache-store.ts, apps/web/src/connection/storage.ts, apps/mobile/src/connection/environment-cache-store.test.ts
The cache schema and persistence interface add an optional vouch. Mobile and web stores save and restore it when present. The mobile test covers vouch round-tripping and saving without a vouch.
Vouch-based shell resumption
packages/client-runtime/src/state/shell.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/shell-sync.test.ts
Shell synchronization resumes from cache only when the vouch matches the active omission key and server version and is less than 12 hours old. It filters stream items from superseded sessions, updates vouches from authoritative snapshots, and saves snapshots with their vouches. Tests cover cache eligibility, session replacement, and reconnects.

Do not mark a non-scanning provider's catalog as pending.

On the refresh path, workspaceSnapshotOrCatalog adds a pending snapshot whenever the client sends providerCatalogsOnDemand and the provider has no cwd snapshot. refreshWorkspaceSnapshot leaves non-scanning providers unchanged, so that fallback is applied again on every refresh. The client treats the pending snapshot as retryable. It then re-requests after each cooldown or draft change, even though the machine catalog is already complete.

Limit the fallback to instances that can scan a cwd. Compute that set the same way the subscription does, from instances with snapshotForCwd, and pass it into the helper. The test at apps/server/src/ws.test.ts:1184-1227 asserts the current pending result for a non-scanning instance. Update that assertion with the fix.

✅ Addressed in commit 486dae0

Note

🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Bil0000

Valid. Fixed in 486dae0c13 by cherry-picking @emmems' fix from #30317 (author kept). The refresh path now sets catalogOnDemand only for an instance with snapshotForCwd, so a provider that cannot scan a folder gets no pending snapshot. The ws.test.ts case "on-demand clients get provider config without workspace snapshots" now expects that, and it fails without the fix.

Move catalog capability resolution into ProviderRegistry.

apps/server/src/ws.ts:2518-2534 performs provider-domain capability resolution and fallback construction after calling refreshWorkspaceSnapshot. Move that logic into the existing provider service, then keep the handler limited to request decoding, one service call, and response/error mapping. This is a mandatory boundary refactor, but the current evidence supports a localized refactor rather than a major-impact issue.

Declining here. This is a boundary refactor, not a behavior bug. The new check copies the subscription path in the same handler (apps/server/src/ws.ts:3263-3268), which already selects instances by snapshotForCwd the same way. workspaceSnapshotOrCatalog comes from #28487. To move both paths into ProviderRegistry, a separate refactor should change them together. This PR is the mobile cache resume.

@Bil0000 Understood. The supplied code confirms that both paths use snapshotForCwd to select scan-capable instances. This finding identifies a service-boundary concern, not a demonstrated behavior bug.

I accept deferring the refactor and will not press for it in this PR. A separate refactor can move both paths into ProviderRegistry together.

Would you like me to open a follow-up issue?

Thanks @Bil0000 for carrying the cold-start resume and the catalog fix into this PR. Closed #30317 in favor of it.

One part of #30317 is not here, so noting it in case it helps later: a replacement socket that starts while a long-resume probe waits (remote routes only).

  • After a long iOS background, if the old socket's probe has no answer 500 ms in, a replacement session connects beside it instead of waiting for the probe to give up.
  • A frame or probe answer on the old socket cancels the replacement, including a frame that lands just before the replacement is ready. A ready replacement swaps in, and the next attempt adopts it instead of connecting again. A failed replacement leaves the decision to the probe.
  • LAN and loopback keep the current behavior.
  • Commits on emmems/t3code: ff9cb58 and f01279f, about 390 lines in supervisor.ts, its tests, and docs/internals/connection-runtime.md. Tests cover the 500 ms start, swap, adoption, a failed replacement, frame cancellation, and no replacement on LAN or loopback.

Your concerns are fair: the replacement connect gets no share of the sync budget, and on a thin link it shares bandwidth with the probe. I don't have iPhone measurements yet. I'll open it as its own PR on top of this one only if timings from a device show it shortens the wait after a long background.

Note

🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Bil0000

Thanks @emmems, and thanks for closing #30317 cleanly. The cold-start resume was your idea, and it shows in the numbers: a relaunch with a saved list now skips the full download, and it is 0.4–0.9 s faster on our bad-wifi bench (see the #30732 description). "Bad wifi" there means a 300 ms round trip with jitter, 1.3 Mbit/s shared both ways, random 500 ms stalls, and no WebSocket compression.

We'll test the replacement socket ourselves. I'll put ff9cb58 and f01279f on top of #30732 and run our "resume after a long background" case on that same link: a remote route, and a socket that goes silent without closing. Two runs per build. If it clearly cuts the wait and nothing else gets slower, we'll stack it as a third PR on #30732 with your commits and your name on them. Thanks @Bil0000, sounds good. Please go ahead: run the long-background case on your bench and, if it clearly helps, stack it as the third PR with those commits. Happy to review it or answer questions about the supervisor changes.

Ran it. ff9cb58 + f01279f on top of #30732, same bad-wifi link, 2 A-B-B-A rounds, 6 sessions each:

Path#30732+ replacement socket
Resume after long background3.57 / 3.91 / 3.68 / 4.02 s3.60 / 3.17 / 3.92 / 4.40 s
Reconnect after a drop2.54 / 2.94 / 2.77 / 3.36 s3.34 / 2.89 / 3.32 / 4.05 s

No clear gain on the long-resume path, and the drop path was slower in 3 of 4 pairs. Our guess: after #28487 the regular replacement already starts at about the same time, so the parallel one saves little and shares the link. So we won't stack it for now. One note if you pick it up later: "replaces an unanswered long resume probe even while the network reports offline" needs LAN_ENTRY on top of #28487, like your merge did. Thanks again for the idea.

Thanks @Bil0000 for running the comparisons and sharing the numbers. With no clear gain after a long background and slower reconnects in 3 of 4 pairs, I agree we should drop the parallel replacement socket. #30317 is already closed in favor of this PR, so nothing else to close on our side. Thanks for carrying the cold-start resume and catalog fix forward.

  • fix: merge current main into the shell cold resume branchbcabd01

Note

Merged current main (bcabd015ff). #28487 landed as a squash, so its late fixes conflicted with this branch's copy of it.

  • supervisor.ts, OutputProtocol.ts, ws.ts and their tests: took main. Main already has the snapshotForCwd catalog fix from 486dae0c13.
  • shell.ts: kept this PR's vouch design, which replaces main's per-session omission key. Items from a superseded session are still dropped.
  • Kept main's rule that a migrated server reloads: databaseMigration is now part of the omission key, and main's migration test case is carried into the family-omission test.

vp run check:changed passes, including shell-sync.test.ts (22 tests) and the mobile cache store tests.

Taking over this one. Measuring it on a large real database showed one case that gets worse on iOS: when a cold start is more than 1,000 events behind, the server sends the full thread list over the WebSocket, which iOS does not compress (1.37 MB instead of 88 KB of gzip HTTP). I'll rebuild it as a stack: the cache resume plus a server reply that sends the client to the HTTP snapshot in that case, then an iOS WebSocket with compression on top. Thanks @Bil0000 and @emmems, the resume idea stays.

Thanks @Bil0000 for finding this, and @emmems for #30317. Together they showed both costs: the full thread-list download on every cold start, and the full snapshot an over-cap resume gets over the iOS socket, which doesn't compress.

I rebuilt it from scratch as a two-PR stack instead of pushing here. I compared it against this diff line by line, and the measurements changed the shape:

  • #32287 handles the cache resume. The saved shell cache records which snapshot it came from: server version, migration, omissions, and age, with a 12 h limit. A matching cache resumes from its cursor. When a gap is too large to replay, the server answers snapshot-required instead of streaming a 1.37 MB snapshot over the socket, and the client reloads over gzip HTTP (88 KB). Measured on a 2,279-thread database, replay wins on CPU and bytes up to the 1,000-event cap. Past about 1,200 events a fresh snapshot is cheaper, so the cap stays.
  • #32288 makes the iOS socket negotiate permessage-deflate, through URLSessionWebSocketTask. Every frame shrinks by 6–10× on the wire.

Closing in favour of those two. Your commit credit is in #32287.
