Problem

A pull request body written in GitHub's web editor comes back with CRLF line endings, and splitPullRequestBody does not see the code fences in it. A media link or <video> tag on its own line inside a code block is then lifted out as an attachment. The block is cut in two: the opening fence and the closing fence render as separate pieces of markdown with a video or image between them.

The call path is PullRequestMarkdown (web apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestMarkdown.tsx, mobile apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestMarkdown.tsx and PullRequestDescription.tsx) to splitPullRequestBody. The server passes the host's body through unchanged. FENCE_PATTERN ends in (.*)$, and . does not match \r, so the pattern fails on ```\r. The body is split on \n, which leaves that \r on each line.

To reproduce, open a pull request whose body was written on github.com and contains:

1```html
2<video src="https://example.com/example.mp4"></video>
3```

Expected: one code block. Actual: the text ```html, a video player, then an empty code block.

Change

FENCE_PATTERN now accepts an optional \r before the end of the line. The closing check already trims the text after the marker, and the other line patterns already tolerate a trailing \r. The markdown text is passed on unchanged.

Scope and approval

This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug: one regular expression, with no change for bodies that use LF. It needs no prior issue or discussion. The existing test "never lifts a link inside fenced code out of it" states the intended behavior; it only failed to hold for CRLF.

Verification

I added two tests to packages/client-runtime/src/pullRequestMarkdown.test.ts: "recognizes fences in a body with CRLF line endings" and "closes a CRLF fence, so a video after it still lifts out".

Without the fix, vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/pullRequestMarkdown.test.ts:

1Tests 2 failed | 17 passed (19)

The second failure shows the split:

1- "text": "```html
2- <video src=\"https://example.com/example.mp4\"></video>
3- ```",
4+ "text": "```html",
5...
6+ "kind": "attachment",
7+ "url": "https://example.com/example.mp4",
8...
9+ "text": "```",

With the fix:

1Tests 19 passed (19)

apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/pullRequestDescriptionContent.test.ts still passes. Targeted lint and format on packages/client-runtime/src, and tsc --noEmit in packages/client-runtime, are clean.

CRLF in real bodies was checked against this repository through the GitHub API: 31 of the 1,000 most recent pull requests have CRLF bodies, including #30280. None of those has a media link or <video> tag alone on a line inside a code block, so this is real but uncommon. Bodies that use LF, and CRLF bodies with no such line, render as before.

Real clients, before and after

Web dev server and the iOS dev client on an iPhone 17 Pro simulator, against a real pull request on a fork whose body was sent with CRLF line endings (confirmed through the GitHub API; 9 of its 10 line breaks are CRLF). That pull request has since been closed. The fix was reverted for the "before" shots.

Before: the block is cut around a video player that can't load, and on iOS the code block is left empty.

After: one code block, with the <video> line in it.

Not checked: Android, or the desktop app, which renders the same web build. Only GitHub bodies were checked for CRLF, not other hosts.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at dcff2e9

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — CRLF pull request bodies now retain fenced code blocks instead of splitting out media links inside them. The change is limited to rendering and attachment classification on web and mobile, with no data or product-default changes.

Walkthrough

The fence pattern now accepts a carriage return before a line ending. Tests verify video URL handling inside and after code fences in CRLF-formatted pull-request bodies.

FENCE_PATTERN permits a trailing carriage return before the line ending. Tests verify that a video URL inside a CRLF code fence remains in the markdown body, while a URL after the closing fence is extracted as an attachment.

Some videos following tab-indented code may remain links instead of attachments. The impact is limited, but the indentation check should be corrected.

verified unchanged head dcff2e9c5e2eec428e68adf4903f90e903fbf26c on linux with the real dev server, playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome. projects and threads were created through the web app. real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns executed git rev-parse HEAD on main and the pr checkout and returned the expected hashes.

reproduced on github/main (7c22e24e3fa1a3bb3a95f27aea000067f198fe7f): the pr description split its fenced video example into code, an unavailable video player, and an empty code block. the exact pr head renders the same content as one code block. opened the real gitcafe pr link from the conversation through the running server.

for the crlf check, temporarily converted this pr description line endings without changing its text. restored its exact original body afterward and confirmed its lf code block also renders correctly. no source changes or pushes were needed.

focused checks on blacksmith: vp test run packages/client-runtime/src/pullRequestMarkdown.test.ts apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/pullRequestDescriptionContent.test.ts, 20 tests passed. github ci is green.

native ios/android and electron shells were not exercised on this linux vm. other agent providers and remote/tunnel connections were not exercised. no claim is made about the example.com video availability; it should remain literal code.

Exclude tabs from fence indentation.

A leading tab makes a line indented code, not a fence. (spec.commonmark.org) For "\t~~~\r\n\r\nhttps://example.com/demo.mp4\r\n", the new pattern opens a fence and leaves the video in markdown instead of extracting it.

Replace \s{0,3} with {0,3} and add a CRLF regression case.
