d1e60edResolved by Julius Marminged1e60edResolved by Julius Marminged1e60edResolved by Julius MarmingeA T3 thread always continued one provider conversation per provider, so there was no way to start over without opening a new thread. Long-lived threads (and automations that post into one thread) keep growing their context.
message.dispatch now takes freshContext. A fresh run gets a brand-new provider thread in the same T3 thread, with no context handoff. The latest started fresh run is a context boundary:
rootProviderThreadsForProvider filters them out), so switching back to a provider after a clear does not bring its old native memory back; The run and its user_message turn item carry freshContext so clients can mark the boundary. Servers advertise the freshContext capability so clients only offer it where it is honored.
Tests: ProviderSwitch.integration.test.ts covers an immediate and a queued fresh send, a run queued behind it, Claude session release, and a later switch to Codex that must not resume the pre-boundary Codex thread or hand over pre-boundary runs. Removing either boundary filter fails it.

Explanation
The title "feat(server): sends can start a fresh provider session" matches the main change: message.dispatch gains freshContext, and a fresh run starts a new provider thread within the same T3 thread. It uses a conventional commit prefix and names the scope (server). It is specific and clear, and a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change.
Explanation
The description covers the problem (threads always continue one provider conversation, so there is no way to start over), the change (freshContext on message.dispatch, context boundary rules, Claude session release, queue-instead-of-steer behavior, capability advertisement), and verification (ProviderSwitch.integration.test.ts scenarios and the note that removing either boundary filter fails the test). It also names the model and harness, as the template asks. The Scope and approval section is missing: it does not link a triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion, and it does not explain why the change qualifies without one. The verification section also does not state any observed results from running the tests, and it does not say what was not checked. Some template-required items are therefore incomplete, but the description is mostly complete.
Resolution
Add a link to the triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion (with the approval comment) in the Scope and approval section, or explain why this change qualifies without one. Also state the observed test results (for example, pass/fail for the named ProviderSwitch scenarios) and note anything that was not verified.

queued-message.promote-to-steerfor a queued fresh-context run. This PR adds queued runs with
freshContext: true. The contract comment formessage.dispatchstates that a fresh send "Never steers".dispatchMessageenforces this by turningsteer_activeandrestart_activeintoqueue_after_active.
dispatchQueuedMessagePromoteToSteerhas no equivalent guard. It checks the run status, delegatedCompletionandnotification. It does not checkqueuedRun.freshContext. A client can promote a queued fresh message while another turn runs. The handler then does the following:
- It cancels the queued run.
- It calls
dispatchSteerIntoRunwith the message text.- The text reaches the old provider conversation.
- No fresh session starts and the context boundary is never created.
This silently violates the "fresh" intent of the send.
Add a rejection next to the existing queued-run checks:

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding on queued-message.promote-to-steer: fixed in 4fd8481fd6d. dispatchQueuedMessagePromoteToSteer now refuses a queued run with freshContext before cancelling it or steering. The queued fresh-session integration test promotes the queued fresh run and asserts that refusal; it fails on the previous head. The clients also stop offering Send now as steer for a queued fresh message (#30325, 4a962e4d014).

@juliusmarminge Thanks. Refusing promotion before cancelling the queued run or steering is the right fix.
Verification is inconclusive. The inspection checkout is at 75204e94, and 4fd8481fd6d is unavailable there. That checkout lacks both the freshContext guard and the promotion-refusal assertion you described.
Please retry verification once the updated revision is available. I’ll leave the finding unresolved until it can be checked. I did not run tests or verify the client change.

@coderabbitai Re the follow-up on delegated-task promotion: applied in 7382015fae9. The delegated-task delivery branch in dispatchMessage now skips fresh sends, so no path turns a fresh send back into steer_active. No test: that branch only runs for server-created delegated-task notifications and completions, which no client or MCP sender can mark freshContext; the guard only makes the never-steers rule hold everywhere.

@juliusmarminge The guard you describe addresses the delegated-task promotion path. Your explanation supports treating it as a defensive invariant check rather than a client-reachable regression.

2271-2271: External image Major · Stability & Availability · Quick winFilter queued provider-switch detaches for background work.
A queued run that changes provider or model can detach every session in
switchPlan.releaseProviderSessionIdswithout checking for background work.ProviderSwitchService.tsbuilds that list from live sessions (lines 162-177). It includes the replaced session forrestart_and_resumeand live sessions on other instances forcreate_with_handoff. It does not check for background work.At queued start, these sessions go into
sessionsToDetachwith no probe (Orchestrator.ts:2268-2276). The probe runs only forsessionsReleasedByFreshContext(Orchestrator.ts:2276-2282). Detaching ends background work inside the provider process. If a session in the release list still runs background work after the foreground run ends, the queued start can end that work. The immediate path avoids this. It probes every session insessionsToDetachand rejects the send (Orchestrator.ts:6428-6440).Apply the same probe to the complete detach set:

@coderabbitai Re the follow-up on queued provider-switch detaches: agreed it is a real gap, but it predates this PR. On main, the queued-start path already detaches switchPlan.releaseProviderSessionIds without a probe; this PR only adds the probe for the sessions a fresh session releases. To keep this PR scoped to fresh sessions, the provider-switch case is being fixed in its own PR against main with a regression test.

@juliusmarminge Understood. Keeping the pre-existing provider-switch gap in a separate PR with a regression test is reasonable. I won’t require that fix as part of this fresh-context PR.
This is a scope decision, not confirmation that the gap is fixed. Would you like me to open a tracking issue for the follow-up?

Only mark a fresh context boundary after the run starts.
A queued-start or provider-session-open failure can leave a fresh run with status: "failed" and startedAt: null. contextBoundaryOrdinal still treats that run as the boundary because cancelledBeforeStart excludes only cancelled runs. Later provider-thread selection can then discard the previous provider conversation and its history. Require startedAt before advancing the boundary.

@coderabbitai Not changing this. Keeping the boundary at a fresh run that failed before starting is intended. A cancelled queued run means the user took back the message and the /clear with it, which is why only that case is excluded. A failed run is different: the request still stands. The single-thread session was already released when the message was accepted, and the timeline already shows the "New session" divider on that message. If the boundary moved back, retrying would quietly send the user back to the conversation they cleared, while the UI says a new session started. The next message goes to the fresh run's provider thread, which sits at the boundary, so nothing gets lost.
@juliusmarminge You're right. I treated provider startup as the point where the clear request takes effect. That was the wrong assumption.
A failed fresh run does not withdraw the clear request. Keeping its boundary prevents later messages from returning to the cleared conversation. The supplied code also retains provider threads whose firstRunOrdinal equals the boundary.
I withdraw this finding and the proposed startedAt !== null check. No change is needed for this concern.

| 5 | Learning: Within repository "pingdotgg/t3code", only for files matching one of ["apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts"]: When reviewing fresh-context boundary selection in apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts, preserve the boundary for a freshContext run that failed before provider startup, including when startedAt is null. Failure does not withdraw the user's clear request, so do not require startedAt to advance contextBoundaryOrdinal. Keep queued runs and runs matched by cancelledBeforeStart excluded; cancelling an unsent queued message withdraws its clear request. |

| 5 | Learning: In the TypeScript orchestration code in apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Orchestrator.ts, run.interrupt and thread.stop use interrupted for user-stopped runs, including runs stopped before provider start. queued-run.cancel instead marks a withdrawn queued run cancelled; an unsent queued run should not supersede restart continuation. The cancelledBeforeStart helper in apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/RestartBackgroundNote.ts does not match interrupted runs, so both restart-continuation precedence checks preserve user interruption. |
