Problem

T3 starts short-lived pi --mode rpc processes for provider status and command discovery, text generation and thread forks, and stops each one as soon as Pi answers. In RPC mode Pi starts a background model-catalog refresh at launch (unless --offline), and that refresh renews an expired OAuth credential. When T3 stops Pi after the token request has gone out but before the response is saved, the single-use refresh token is spent and auth.json keeps it, so the next use of that login fails with OAuth refresh failed for openai: … {"error": "invalid_grant"}. A hard kill also leaves auth.json.lock behind, and the next Pi start hangs for about 30 s.

Reproduced on main cefb544af3 with Pi 1.4.0, an expired openai OAuth login in a scratch agent dir, and a fake auth.openai.com with single-use rotation: T3's discovery command stopped 100, 150 or 200 ms after its answers (SIGTERM, or SIGKILL as on Windows) lost the rotated token every time, and the next refresh got invalid_grant.

Change

buildPiRpcLaunch takes an offline input that appends --offline after the user's launch arguments. Discovery (status.ts), text generation (textGeneration.ts) and forks (adapter.ts) set it. Thread sessions keep exactly the user's launch arguments, so they still refresh the catalog and renew credentials in a process that is not stopped right away. A credential that expires is renewed on its next request instead, which runs to completion before T3 stops the process.

--offline also turns off Pi's other startup network work in these processes: installing a configured package that is missing, refreshing temporary git sources, update and version checks, and downloading fd/rg. A package listed in Pi's settings but not yet installed therefore shows its commands after a thread session has installed it, instead of after the next discovery probe.

The same applies to extensions that discover models when they load and honour PI_OFFLINE, such as pi-provider-litellm. Discovery then shows the catalog Pi has stored, which thread sessions keep writing, so on a first run those models appear in T3 after one Pi thread has run instead of right away.

Scope and approval

Fixes pingdotgg/t3code#30182

Verification

  • Three tests fail on main and pass with the fix: status.test.ts "starts discovery Pi offline so stopping it cannot interrupt a credential refresh" (status and per-workspace command discovery), textGeneration.test.ts "starts text generation Pi offline so stopping it cannot interrupt a credential refresh", and adapter.test.ts "starts fork Pi offline while the thread session keeps refreshing the catalog" (also asserts the thread session is not offline). On main: expected [ '--mode', 'rpc', '--no-session' ] to include '--offline'.
  • vp test run on status, textGeneration, adapter and mcpInjection tests: 124 passed. vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (9 packages) and tests pass.
  • Runtime, real Pi 1.4.0 against a fake single-use token endpoint behind a deny-all proxy, synthetic credentials only. Each run stops a T3-style probe and then starts a normal Pi that needs the stored token:

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Pi discovery, background text generation, and fork helpers now start offline to prevent interrupted catalog refreshes from losing login credentials. This changes their default refresh behavior and requires human acceptance of that tradeoff; interactive sessions remain unchanged.

Short-lived Pi probes will no longer spend OAuth refresh tokens when they are stopped. Offline discovery may under-report network-provided models or commands from uninstalled packages until the next rescan, but this is an accepted and bounded tradeoff, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

Explanation

Directly linked issue #30182 has these coding requirements. (1) Short-lived Pi RPC processes must not renew OAuth tokens before T3 stops them. Discovery (status.ts, makePiDiscoveryConnection, and per-workspace command discovery per the status test), text generation (textGeneration.ts), and forks (adapter.ts forkThread) now pass offline: true. mcpInjection.ts appends --offline after the user's launch arguments when offline is true. The diff confirms these call sites. The three named regression tests assert --offline on these launches. The PR runtime table shows offline probes made no token request, and a later normal Pi process refreshed and saved the rotated token. (2) Long-lived thread sessions must keep normal catalog refresh and credential renewal. The thread session launch in adapter.ts is unchanged, and the adapter test asserts the thread session is not offline. (3) Hard-killed probes must not leave auth.json.lock behind or stall the next start. The lock comes from the refresh path, which offline probes no longer run. The PR does not record lock state for offline hard-kill runs, so this point rests on the mechanism and the absence of a token request. Items the issue mentions but this PR does not test (Pi 1.5.0, Windows and macOS runs, a full T3 server run) are verification gaps, not missing code. The Pi-side work in earendil-works/pi#11692 is outside this change.

Explanation

Every changed hunk serves the #30182 fix. The changes are the new offline input in buildPiRpcLaunch, its three call sites (status.ts, textGeneration.ts, adapter.ts forkThread), and regression tests in status, textGeneration and adapter tests. No unrelated production code or configuration changes appear in the reviewed diffs. The PR description discloses that --offline also disables other startup network work in these short-lived processes: missing package installs, temporary git source refresh, update and version checks, and fd/rg downloads. These effects come from Pi's flag, not from separate code in this PR. They apply only to discovery, text generation and forks, and they do not change thread sessions. Deferred package installation for discovery is a user-visible trade-off, not an unrelated change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section states the bug, the reproduction environment, and the failure mode. The Change section explains the offline flag and which call sites set it. The Scope section links issue #30182. The Verification section lists the named failing-then-passing tests, the test and check commands with results, a runtime table with observed outcomes, and what was not checked (Windows, macOS, and an end-to-end run with a real ChatGPT login). The description ends with the model and harness that did the work, as the template asks. The Scope and approval section cites a linked issue but does not quote a maintainer approval comment. The template asks for approval of direction and scope, so a reviewer may want to confirm that approval exists. Adding a reference to that comment would close this gap.

External image Unverified finding Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Handle configured packages that are not installed yet.

With --offline, Pi skips installation of missing configured packages. On a fresh workspace, command discovery can succeed without their skills and slash commands, so T3 publishes an incomplete catalog until an online Pi launch installs the packages. Preserve package provisioning or report the incomplete discovery instead. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve discovery for uncached provider catalogs.

--offline disables network model discovery. A provider such as LiteLLM can therefore return no models on a fresh cache, even when its credentials and endpoint work. T3 then omits those models from the picker or falls back to an unknown status. Preserve a safe way to populate the catalog without terminating a process during credential refresh. (github.com)

Checked against Pi 1.4.0 and pi-provider-litellm main. This is partly right; the remaining effect is a deliberate trade-off rather than a bug.

  • Pi's own network catalog refresh never reached the probe's answer: get_available_models returns the current snapshot (rpc-mode.js), and the network refresh runs in the background after launch. On main, T3 stops the probe right after it answers, which is exactly what spends the single-use refresh token.
  • Extensions that discover at activation are different. With PI_OFFLINE set, pi-provider-litellm skips its startup discovery (src/index.ts, seedModels). Its own comment notes that once Pi has persisted the catalog, Pi still offers the stored models. Thread sessions keep running online, so they still write that store.
  • The cost is a first run: a provider like LiteLLM shows no models in T3 until a Pi thread has run once. Keeping discovery online would keep the invalid_grant loss in #30182, because the probe that runs every five minutes is the main trigger. There is no Pi switch that turns off credential-refreshing network work while leaving extension discovery on.

The PR description now states this trade-off.

@juliusmarminge You’re right. I withdraw the change request.

I treated first-run extension discovery as a defect without accounting for the credential-refresh risk. Pi’s background catalog refresh also differs from extension discovery at activation.

The first-run LiteLLM limitation is an accepted trade-off here. Long-lived online thread sessions can populate the persisted catalog. Keeping short-lived discovery offline prevents the token-loss path described in #30182. No change to offline: true is needed for this finding.

5Learning: Within repository "pingdotgg/t3code", only for files matching one of ["packages/provider-pi/src/server/status.ts"]: When reviewing offline discovery in packages/provider-pi/src/server/status.ts, do not flag missing first-run models from activation-discovery extensions such as pi-provider-litellm as a defect solely because the probe runs offline. This is an accepted trade-off to prevent short-lived probes from interrupting OAuth refresh; online thread sessions can populate the persisted catalog. Before recommending online probes to restore discovery, verify that the proposed mechanism prevents interrupted credential refresh. Reassess this trade-off if Pi provides a verified way to separate extension discovery from credential-refreshing startup work.
