Problem

Since 0.1.6 the composer model picker puts each model on one line. Long names and their sub-provider label are cut off ("DeepSeek V4.1 Flas…" "OpenC…"), the docked Reasoning header cuts off the selected model ("DeepSeek V4…"), and only a clipped model name had a hover title, so a clipped sub-provider, the provider instance and the header label could not be read anywhere. Reproduced on main c65f8d552b in the web app with a fresh database and the OpenCode provider (its real catalogue has these long names), at 1280×800 in the OpenCode and Favorites tabs and at 390×844.

Change

The existing clipped-only hover title from #28409 moves into a small titleWhenClipped helper:

  • A model row puts the title on its whole text block and shows it when the name or the sub-provider label is cut off. It reads name · sub-provider · provider instance, with repeats dropped. Rows that fit still get no title.
  • The Reasoning column header shows the full model name on hover when its label is cut off. The docked picker context now carries that full name (modelName) next to the shown label, since the header shows the trigger's short form ("Opus 5.5" for "Claude Opus 5.5"). The label is keyed by that name, so a model picked with the keyboard under a resting pointer does not keep the previous model's title.

The row layout, the popup size and the model slug are unchanged.

Scope and approval

Fixes pingdotgg/t3code#29099

Triaged via the automated issue flow. Web and desktop share these components; the React Native picker is separate and untouched.

Verification

  • Red first: ProviderModelPicker.browser.test.tsx "names a row's cut-off sub-provider and its provider instance on hover" and ComposerModelEffort.browser.test.tsx "names the selected model in full when the column header cuts it off" fail on main (expected '' to contain 'DeepSeek V4.1 Flash Free', expected '' to be 'DeepSeek V4.1 Flash Free') and pass with the fix, along with the rest of those files and ProviderModelPicker.composition.browser.test.tsx.
  • The header test also renders a short label with a longer full name (fails if the title uses the short label) and switches models while hovered (fails without the key, keeping the old title).
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests and react compiler pass.
  • Not checked: the Electron shell itself (the web surface it wraps is captured below), macOS/Windows native tooltip rendering, touch devices (no hover).

Evidence

Rows Z, R2, R2n, P1, R3 and E1 were captured at 6529fb0ef4. Later commits change only the Reasoning header's title source and key, which are covered by row I2 at 4039839b19 and by the header test; the row code is unchanged since. The dark rows (Z-wide-dark, P1) are pixel-identical as delivered, but a fresh re-seed shifts the sidebar's relative thread ages ("5h" to "4h"), so a rebuild differs there.

Compared 30654b3e91 (Before) with 6529fb0ef4 (After) for #29099. Rows Z, R2, R2n, P1, R3 and E1 (8 viewport/theme cases) compare against 6529fb0ef4; L3 and I2, further down, compare against bb2c038095 and 4039839b19.

Linux fs-43; headed Chromium 148.0.7778.96 via Playwright 1.60.0 on Xvfb; real X11 mouse (xdotool); no device/touch emulation; DPR 1; browser zoom and font scaling 100%; prefers-reduced-motion: reduce; browser Date fixed at 2026-11-02T12:00:00.000Z. Whole app viewports: 1280×800 light/dark and 390×844 light. Native stills use ImageMagick import -window root. Recordings use X11 at 8 fps and ffmpeg palettegen/paletteuse.

Each sheet preserves the full native viewport in four panels: Before upper left, After upper right, Diff0 lower left, DiffT lower right. Diff0 amplifies every nonzero RGB-channel difference to magenta; DiffT highlights a maximum RGB-channel difference greater than 16/255 in cyan. Black means unchanged. Comparisons use the original full-resolution stills, without registration, cropping, resizing, or masking.

What else changed: in R2, R2n, P1 and E1 all differences are confined to the native tooltip rectangle; L3 likewise; I2 differs only by three popup-corner antialias pixels (max 3/255). The three Z controls and R3 have zero changed pixels at threshold 0. No other visible change was found. Not captured in the real app: a clipped header whose short label differs from the full name (for example "Opus 5.5 …" for "Claude Opus 5.5 …"); the real catalogue's short labels fit the column, so only the header browser test covers it.

Fresh isolated server homes were created with T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0 vp run dev --home-dir <scratch home> from each pinned checkout. The synthetic project/thread payloads and real OpenCode catalogue were the same; no provider turn was sent. The default Big Pickle selection is reset before each run; Claude Opus 5.5 Fast is favorited before the P1 hover. This verifies the web surface shared by desktop, without claiming an Electron-shell or React Native test.

Before every still, network idle and fonts were awaited. Two read-only X11 samples 500 ms apart had to match exactly, then one import -window root capture was taken and checked against the last sample. This avoids the import tool dismissing native tooltips. Earlier mismatched frames were rejected. GIFs preserve the full viewport and stop 0.4 seconds before recording end to omit that capture-tool dismissal. Timings below are relative to GIF start and were corrected from the decoded frames by the proof audit; frames are quantized to 8 fps (±0.125 s).

I2 — model picked under a resting pointer, 1280×800 light

The stale title this row checks for was a regression inside this PR's own intermediate commit 6529fb0ef4, never on main, which has no header title at all; the proof audit captured it there: 6529fb0ef4: Big Pickle selected under the pointer keeps the DeepSeek title. This row shows the final head drops the old title when the model changes, and the before side for comparison.

Environment: Linux fs-43; headed Chromium 148.0.7778.96 / Playwright 1.60.0, Xvfb via headless-desktop, real xdotool pointer; full 1280×800 light viewport and root, DPR 1, 100% zoom/fonts, no device emulation, reduced motion; browser Date fixed at 2026-11-02T12:00:00Z. Fresh per-revision databases; same synthetic fixture, initial picker scrollTop 160, final filtered list and page scroll 0. X11 recording at 20 fps; ffmpeg palettegen/paletteuse GIFs. Settled stills use two matching X11 samples 500 ms apart, then one import -window root, checked equal to the last sample.

What else changed: final sheets differ only at three antialias pixels in popup corner [354,345,357,348), max difference 3/255. The same residual persisted after a full retake; DiffT is empty. No other final-state pixels changed. In recordings, search filters the list and removes the provider sidebar on both sides; Enter changes model/reasoning choices on both. Only After has the initial native tooltip. Typing paint times differ slightly, as listed above.

DOM: Before DeepSeek title=null; final Big Pickle title=null, header node preserved. After DeepSeek title="DeepSeek V4.1 Flash Free"; final Big Pickle title="" (no tooltip), header node replaced. Both final labels fit at scrollWidth/clientWidth 55/55. The literal After attribute is empty, rather than absent.

Not checked: the native Electron shell (the shared web surface was exercised).

Walkthrough

Clipped model labels now receive titles on hover in the docked effort column and model picker rows. The model picker row title combines the model name, sub-provider, and provider display name. Browser tests cover both label surfaces.

Explanation

The whole-PR changes at head 4039839b19 relate to issue [#29099]. clippedTitle.ts adds the titleWhenClipped helper, which sets a title only when the element or a direct child is clipped. ModelListRow.tsx applies this helper to the text block and uses the name, sub-provider, and provider display name. ComposerModelEffort.tsx applies the helper to the clipped model label, and ProviderModelPicker.tsx adds modelName to DockedPickerContext for that label. The two browser test files cover the new titles. The React Native picker is not changed. No unrelated product change was found in the reviewed summary and inspected files.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#29099] (open, direct) asks for three visible identifiers for clipped picker labels: the full model name, the provider instance name, and the model slug. The title states "no way to see the full name, provider, or slug." The head code meets the name and provider parts. In apps/web/src/components/chat/ModelListRow.tsx, the row's pointer-enter handler calls titleWhenClipped with the display name, sub-provider, and providerDisplayName. ComposerModelEffort.tsx gives the clipped Reasoning header a title with the full model name. The slug is not met. ModelListRow receives props.slug, but it uses slug only for the item value, the favorite toggle, and the key. It is not rendered or placed in any title. The header title does not include the slug. The PR description states that the model slug is unchanged. It does not remove the slug requirement from the issue. The added browser tests check name and provider text only, not slug visibility.

Resolution

Expose the model slug for clipped picker labels. For example, add props.slug to the titleWhenClipped string in ModelListRow.tsx, with a repeat-free join, and to the header title if the header should show it. Add a browser test that asserts the slug appears in the hover title. If maintainers remove the slug requirement from #29099, update the issue and reassess this check.

Wait for the overflow assertion.

This assertion reads layout synchronously. A transient layout can fail the test before it settles. Wrap it in vi.waitFor; apply the same change at ProviderModelPicker.browser.test.tsx, Line 210.

As per coding guidelines: “Browser tests assert through expect.element or vi.waitFor.”

Use the full model name for the hover title.

ProviderModelPicker.tsx passes triggerTitle as modelLabel. That value can omit the model family: for example, a Claude model can be shortened from Claude Opus ... to Opus .... The hover title therefore still omits part of the model name. Pass the full model label separately while keeping the displayed label unchanged. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

✅ Addressed in commit bb2c038

Fixed in bb2c038095: the docked context now carries the full display name (modelName, the trigger's triggerLabel) next to the short modelLabel, and the header's hover title uses it. The header test now shows a short label ("Opus 5.5 …") and expects the full "Claude Opus 5.5 …" title; it fails with the old code.

@juliusmarminge Thanks. The supplied code now uses picker.modelName for the hover title and keeps picker.modelLabel as the displayed label. This addresses the finding. The reported regression test covers the short-label versus full-name case.

Update the title when the selected model changes.

If a user hovers a clipped header and then selects another model with the keyboard, the existing title remains the previous model name until the pointer leaves and re-enters. ModelPickerContent.tsx permits keyboard model selection while the picker stays open. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep the title synchronized with picker.modelName and the current clipping state. Extend the existing header test to cover a model change while hovered.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Fixed in 4039839b19: the header label is keyed by the model name, so a model picked under a resting pointer remounts it without the previous title; the next pointer entry titles it afresh. The header test now rerenders with another model while hovered and fails without the key (old title kept).

@juliusmarminge The supplied code confirms that key={picker.modelName} remounts the header label when the model name changes. This removes the stale title. The next pointer entry checks clipping and sets the current model name. This addresses the finding.
