Asked to link a list of PRs, agents call link_pull_request once per PR. Over Oct 3 to 31 that tool made 1,079 calls in back-to-back runs of 3 or more on maintainer threads, up to 58 in one turn ("can you link all of the stacked prs into this thread?").

link_pull_requests takes urls and links every PR that is not already linked, in one call. The result groups PR numbers by repository into linked and alreadyLinked. URLs that are not PRs come back in invalidUrls instead of failing the call. link_pull_request's description points at it for several PRs, and the shared linking rule ("one link_pull_request per PR") now names both tools. The result's linkedCount survives wire compaction, so a grouped work-log row reads "linked 6 pull requests" and never counts duplicates or rejected URLs.

The mcp-tool-use eval gets a mock for the tool and three cases: two bad (a 14-PR stack, 12 pasted URLs) and a control (one named PR must not batch). Cases that forbid unwanted linking now forbid link_pull_requests too.

Stacked on https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/27925.

Batch link benchmark: calls, wall time, output and input tokens for 14, 58 and 120 PRs on Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol, main vs this branch, plus eval case pass rates

Eval, 3 samples per cell. Baseline is main's tool list (this branch with link_pull_requests hidden); candidate is 2defa832d9. Shell and GitHub are simulated; time is model time through a local proxy, so compare it relatively.

CaseSonnet 5.5 main → newGPT-6.1 Sol main → new
link-stacked-prs (bad)0/3 → 3/30/3 → 3/3
link-pasted-prs (bad)0/3 → 3/30/3 → 3/3
link-one-pr (control)3/3 → 3/33/3 → 3/3

Scale run, pasted URLs, means of 3 samples:

Every scale sample in both conditions ended with every PR linked. Before the description pointer, Sol still made per-PR calls in 2 of 3 samples of the pasted case; the numbers above are with it.

Regression, 31 existing cases that check PR linking, GPT-6.1 Sol, 2 samples each: main 62/62, new 61/62. The miss, schedule-one-off-tomorrow, is a scheduling case and passed 4/4 on rerun.

After the linking-rule change (402e96d9cf): every pull-request case plus three linking guards, GPT-6.1 Sol, 2 samples each, 75/76. The miss, control-link-means-url, passed 6/6 on rerun. The 10 PR-creation and linking cases on Sonnet 5.5, 3 samples each: 30/30. A first wording that named only link_pull_requests made Sonnet use it for single PRs, so the rule names both.

Real path

Dev server from this branch, prompt "link these here so i can track them:" with 6 real pingdotgg/t3code PR URLs. Claude Haiku 5.5 and Codex GPT-6 Luna each made one link_pull_requests call and linked all 6.

Claude Haiku thread: one batch call, work log reads "Used 1 tool and linked 6 pull requests"

Codex Luna thread: one batch call, its row reads "Linked pull requests"

Limits

  • A lone batch call shows the tool's label, "Linked pull requests", without a count. Counts appear when the row summarizes a group, as on Haiku.
  • At 12 to 14 PRs Sol took 3 to 5 s longer with the batch tool; on main it already runs per-PR calls inside one code cell.
  • Mobile shares the work-log summary through client-runtime; it was not run on a device.

Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running in T3 Code.

When input.urls contains the same URL more than once, this mock returns that pull request multiple times in linked (for example, numbers: [1, 1]), inflating the linked count. fresh is computed before any URLs are added to sample.linked, so deduplicate the URLs before mapping them, as the production handler does.

An issue URL such as https://github.com/acme/app/issues/301 is returned as a successful link with PR number 301 and added to sample.linked, instead of being reported in invalidUrls. pullRequest() does not validate that the URL targets a pull request, so filter invalid targets and return them in invalidUrls before mutating the set.

Explanation

The title "feat(mcp): link several PRs to a thread with one call" matches the main change. The PR adds a link_pull_requests tool that links multiple PR URLs to one thread in a single call. It is a short, conventional-commit style title that a teammate scanning history can understand.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description clearly explains the problem, implementation, verification results, limitations, and agent details. The Scope and approval section is incomplete because it links to a stacked pull request but does not provide a triaged issue or discussion with explicit maintainer approval, nor explain why this focused change qualifies for an exemption.

Resolution

Add the relevant triaged issue or discussion link and quote or identify the explicit maintainer approval of the direction and scope. If no prior approval is required, explain why this is a small, focused fix of an obvious bug or established capability configuration.

Move batch linking behind OrchestratorV2.

link_pull_requests performs link selection and runs Effect.forEach with one engine.dispatch per pull request. Keep the MCP handler to input decoding, one domain-service call, and result/error mapping.

unlink_pull_requests already uses the same pattern, so this is not a new major runtime failure. This is a recommended architectural refactor. Add the batch operation to the domain owner of thread.pull-request.link rather than adding another handler-local implementation.

Fixed in 402e96d9cf: the result carries linkedCount (unique valid PRs), the wire compaction keeps it, and the label counts it. Without a count, a batch row drops the number.

@maria-rcks Thanks for the fix in 402e96d9cf. The summary now uses linkedCount instead of the input URL count. If a batch result has no count, the label omits the number.

Fixed in 402e96d9cf: the mock dedupes by URL before deciding which targets are new.

@maria-rcks, the updated mock removes exact duplicate URLs before computing fresh.

The normalized-identity case remains. URLs ending in /pull/123 and /pull/123/ both pass validation but remain separate targets. The existing-link check also treats them as different PRs.

Please use the same normalized PR identity for deduplication and existing-link checks.
