Opening the Timeline tab of a large pull request rendered every event at once. On pingdotgg/t3code#2829 (823 commits, 932 review threads, about 2,800 timeline items) that mounted around 400k DOM nodes and stalled the page for over 3 s at a time, and the tab stays mounted while hidden.

The timeline now renders through LegendList, which mounts only the rows near the viewport. The connector line moves to the list's content container, and the header still condenses on scroll through the list's scroll node. A new test renders 2,000 commits and fails on main (all 2,000 rows mounted) and passes here (under 200).

Walkthrough

The pull request changes timeline rendering to use LegendList for non-empty activity. It broadens scroller ref types to HTMLElement, exports the timeline row type, and adds a browser test for a 2,000-commit timeline.

Use a class for the fixed test viewport height.

Replace style={{ height: 600 }} with a height class such as h-[600px]. The web UI rule says, “No style={{ ... }} or inline <style> for static values a class covers.” The path instructions apply that rule to this file. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add a scroll-to-end check so the timeline test catches unreachable commits.

The test renders 2,000 commits and checks only two things: that Commit number 0 is visible, and that the mounted button count is below COMMITS / 10. It never scrolls. An implementation that mounts only the first rows passes both checks, so a regression that makes later commits unreachable would not fail this test.

Capture the list's scroll node and scroll it to its end. Then assert that the last commit is visible.

Keep disclosure state for comment groups and review threads outside the virtualized rows.

ConversationGroup and ReviewThreadEvent keep their disclosure state in local useState. LegendList renders only rows near the viewport, so a row that scrolls out of range unmounts. When it scrolls back in, the disclosure resets to its default. A user who expanded a comment group or review thread loses that expansion after scrolling. Before this change, every row stayed mounted, so the expansion persisted.

Store both values in PullRequestTimelineTab, keyed by rowKey(row), and pass them down as controlled props. rowKey already changes when a thread is resolved or dismissed, so a stored value for the old key is not reused. The new key falls back to the current default. This matches the existing comment on rowKey.
