Problem

A server preview tab whose navigation fails can show Success for the page it was leaving instead of LoadFailed. The failure is then hidden from t3_preview_list and from every client that reads the session list.

It happens when the navigation starts and fails while a load report for the previous page is still waiting on that page's title. CodeRabbit found it while reviewing #27456. It exists on main for every load and framenavigated report, independent of that PR.

Change

reportLoaded reads the URL, awaits page.title(), and reports Success if the tab isn't loading and the URL hasn't changed. A main-frame navigation that starts and fails during that await sets loading and then clears it. Chromium commits its error page only after requestfailed, so the URL still matches the old page. The held report then overwrote LoadFailed with Success. The error page's own report returns early on chrome-error://, so nothing corrected it.

reportLoaded now records tab.navigationGeneration before the title read and drops its report if a navigation started during it. The loading and URL checks stay as they were.

Scope and approval

This is a very small fix for an obvious bug: a failed navigation is reported as a successful load of a different page. The change is two lines in one function plus a test. It changes no contract, client, or product default.

Verification

  • New test in apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts, "a navigation that fails while a load reads its title keeps its failure". It holds the title during a load, then starts and fails a navigation. After releasing the title, it fires a second load at the same await depth to mark the end. On main the first Success reported carries the held title ("Held"). With the fix, the held report is dropped and the first Success is the second load's.
  • vp test run src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts passes (31 tests), and vp run check:changed passes.
  • Not checked: a live run against a real failing navigation.

Approvability

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The change prevents an outdated title read from replacing a newer preview navigation failure with a success status. It is limited to status reporting and leaves navigation behavior and product defaults unchanged.

Walkthrough

reportLoaded now skips a success report if navigation state changes while it reads the page title. A test covers a delayed title read around a failed navigation request and a later load.

reportLoaded checks the navigation generation, loading state, and URL after reading the page title. The test delays the title read, emits a failed navigation request, then checks for Loading and LoadFailed for the failed URL before the later load reports Success test page.

Possibly related issues

  • pingdotgg/t3code#8732: This change addresses a stale success report after a failed navigation, but not the timeout after navigation completes.
  • pingdotgg/t3code#18555: This change preserves failure reporting during a delayed load report, but does not add the browser error reason.

Possibly related PRs

  • pingdotgg/t3code#27456: Both changes affect when reportLoaded publishes Success; this guard covers a navigation race that can also affect the added call path.
  • pingdotgg/t3code#27735: Both changes prevent a late load status from reporting stale success after a tab navigation or replacement.

Guard the report after the history request.

If the history request for an old Success is delayed, a newer navigation can fail and publish LoadFailed first. The old history response can then publish Success over that failure. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Carry the navigation generation through report and reject stale reports at the status update. Add a test that holds the old history response until the failure is published.

Assert that the failure remains reported.

This test skips the failed event and waits for a synthetic Success. It passes even if requestfailed never reports the failure. Await the failure, release the held title, and assert that the session still has LoadFailed after the held report finishes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per path instructions: “Test behavior that can break” and “proof should include the fewest test cases that fail on main for that reason.”

✅ Addressed in commit 7d946fe

Agreed, fixed in 7d946fe857. The test now records this tab's statuses in order and expects exactly Loading …/missing, LoadFailed …/missing, Success test page. It fails if the failure is never reported, and if the held report lands (on main the last entry is Success Held). The later load is still the end marker, since otherwise nothing marks the point where the held report would have published.

@camchis The updated assertion addresses the finding. It detects both a missing LoadFailed event and an unexpected Success Held. Keeping the later load as the end marker is appropriate for this test.

  • test(server): assert the failed navigation is reported and survives the held load7d946fe
Synced from GitHub

On CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding (report at ServerBrowser.ts:557, a delayed history reply publishing a stale Success over a newer LoadFailed): I'm leaving it out of this PR.

  • Every report sends Page.getNavigationHistory on the same CDP session, tab.cdp. The browser process answers that command itself, without waiting on the page, so replies come back in the order they were sent. An earlier report's reply can't arrive after a later one's, so the reorder would need out-of-order replies on one session.
  • It's a different mechanism in different code from the title-read race this PR fixes, so it would be its own PR under CONTRIBUTING.md either way.

If someone sees that reorder happen in practice, I'll send the generation guard on report separately.

Verified in a real dev environment

Checked exact head aa2ff9c89407908f54bd9ab05c25c151bd2e8a17 on a disposable Linux VM. Installed with vp i, ran the real dev server in the background, and drove the web client with repo Playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome. Main ran first in a separate worktree and was stopped before starting this head.

Created projects and threads through the app. Real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns created and started a small site in a separate git repository. No app mocks, demo data, or app-source changes were used.

  • Actual browser panel: failed navigation reports and retains LoadFailed for ERR_UNSAFE_PORT and ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED; recovery to a working page succeeds.
  • Working links, Back, and same-document fragment navigation succeed, with the expected URL and title.
  • Real Codex browser tools on the running server independently report LoadFailed (-2, ERR_UNSAFE_PORT), then Success / Next page, then successful same-document navigation.
  • Blacksmith: all 49 server-browser tests pass. vp run check:changed e5909e53c32a9d5b51caf6352d1f17fd73e86db7 passes format, lint, knip, graphql, affected typechecks and adjacent tests. All 29 existing CI checks are successful. No commits or pushes were needed.

Runtime transcript

The matching captures show ordinary failure handling on main and the PR. They do not demonstrate the delayed-title race.

main: failed navigation retains the unsafe-port error

pr: failed navigation retains the unsafe-port error

pr: working link, back navigation, fragment navigation, failure and recovery

Not verified

The exact stale-success race is still unverified in a live browser. On github/main (8b74a69019), 15 recorded same-document navigations followed immediately by an unsafe-port navigation, plus 60 recorded load-time redirects to the unsafe port, all retained the failure. A busy-renderer attempt also retained it. The PR retained the failure in 15 matching same-document attempts. None reproduced the original failure on main, so these runs cannot establish a before/after proof of this guard. The deterministic test passes, but it is not a substitute for that live reproduction.

Native Electron, iOS and Android clients, remote/relay/tunnel connections, and macOS/Windows were not exercised on this Linux VM. No claim of complete runtime verification is made.
