Problem

On web and desktop, the first message in a new thread never shows its run's output in the thread view: the view keeps only the user's message, and after switching to another thread and back it shows "Send a message to start the conversation." until the app reloads. Reproduced on main 5ef56853ef in the web dev server with Codex: open a new-thread draft, send "Reply with the single word: pong"; the server stores the reply, the view never shows it.

The draft view asks the server for its reserved thread id (GET /api/orchestration/threads/<id>/bounded) as soon as it opens, before the thread exists. The 404 marks that thread deleted in the client's thread state, which never subscribes to it again, so the thread stays empty after the send creates it.

Change

The run-stop read in useThreadLifecycle (added with the Stop / force-stop work in #27252) subscribed to the thread's detail state with activeThreadRef, which on a draft is the reserved thread id. It now uses ChatView's routeThreadDetailRef, the shell-gated ref every other detail reader in ChatView already uses (resolveThreadDetailRef): it stays null on a draft until the server lists the thread, and equals the route ref on server threads, so the Stop banner there is unchanged. Mobile already reads run-stop through its gated selectedThreadDetailRef.

Fixes pingdotgg/t3code#27443

Triaged via the automated issue flow; GitCafe issue #27443.

Verification

  • apps/web/src/components/ChatView.browser.test.tsx › "a new draft does not load its reserved thread before the server lists it": mounts the app on a new draft and asserts no request for the reserved thread. On main it fails with the unexpected …/threads/thread-27443/bounded?… request; with the fix it passes.
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (2 packages), tests (3 files), react compiler all pass.
  • Real web app, fresh synthetic databases, same synthetic git project and Codex (gpt-6-astra) on both sides. Server request transcripts: before, the reserved id gets a 404 before the send; after, the only request for the new thread is a 200 after it exists.

Rendering: T3 preview browser (Chrome 156, Linux), no emulation, DPR 2, font scale 1. Recordings 1440×1000 CSS dark. Desktop stills 1440×1000 CSS dark (exported raster capped at 1280×889); narrow stills 390×844 CSS light. Reduced-motion emulation unavailable.

Same banner and outcome on both sides; other differences are provider timing and sidebar history from the before side's retries.

S1 before: Stopping banner after pressing StopS1 after: Stopping banner after pressing Stop

Not captured separately: a draft whose first send fails and is retried, a send moved to the background, promotion while Settings or Usage is open, and narrow draft interactions. Each passes through the same early request on draft open that M1 and D5 show. Not checked: the Electron shell itself (desktop runs this same web view), remote and tunnel connections, and providers other than Codex. The seeding and driver scripts are not attached (no file host for non-image files from this machine).

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 36c9296

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The run-stop subscription now waits until a new thread exists, matching the other detail readers and allowing its first reply to appear without reloading. Existing-thread behavior is preserved, with no material operational or data exposure change.

Walkthrough

The web chat lifecycle now reads run-stop state from the route thread-detail reference when available, with a null fallback. A browser test checks that a draft’s reserved thread ID does not receive an orchestration request before the server lists it. PROJECT_ID is exported for test setup.

Changes: Web thread read gate

Layer / File(s)Summary
Pass the route detail reference to the lifecycle
apps/web/src/components/chat/useThreadLifecycle.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx
The lifecycle accepts a nullable thread-detail reference. ChatView passes the route reference, and run-stop state uses it when available, with a null fallback.
Check draft request behavior
apps/web/src/components/ChatView.browser.test.tsx, apps/web/test/fakeEnvironment.ts
A browser test checks that a draft’s reserved thread ID does not receive an orchestration request before the server lists it. The test setup disables RPC latency tracking, and PROJECT_ID is exported for use by the test.

Explanation

The title "fix(web): a new thread's first reply shows without reloading" matches the main change. The PR changes the run-stop read in useThreadLifecycle so it no longer subscribes to the reserved thread's detail state on drafts. That stops the early 404 that left the new thread empty. The title is specific and follows the conventional commit format. It describes the user-visible symptom, not the internal cause, which is acceptable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section gives reproduction steps and expected behavior. The Change section explains the fix and why the ref is gated. The Scope section links issue #27443 and says it was triaged. Verification gives a browser test, check results, and before and after comparisons with screenshots and transcripts. It is thorough. Two points are weaker. The Scope section cites an automated triage flow and a GitCafe issue, not a clear maintainer approval comment. The template also requires that the author state anything not checked, and the description does this for the Electron shell and other providers. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes.

Explanation

#27443 asks that the thread view show a thread's conversation after the server creates the thread. The client marked the thread deleted after an early bounded-snapshot request returned thread_not_found, and never subscribed again. The PR removes that early request. In useThreadLifecycle.tsx, the run-stop read (anyRunStop) now uses the new threadDetailRef input instead of activeThreadRef. Per the PR and its raw summary, ChatView passes routeThreadDetailRef as threadDetailRef. That ref is null on drafts until the server lists the thread, so a draft no longer subscribes to its reserved ID. The author reports a browser test ('a new draft does not load its reserved thread before the server lists it') that fails on main and passes with the fix, and a real-app transcript where the only request for the new thread is a 200 after creation. Limits: the ChatView.tsx diff blob was unavailable, so the call-site wiring is confirmed only by the PR summary and the required prop type (a missing argument would fail typecheck, which the author reports passing). The deleted-state logic in threads.ts is unchanged, so any other early request for an unborn thread ID would still stick. The issue reports the trigger as unconfirmed, and the PR's reproduction identifies this read as the trigger. No coding requirement remains unmet in the issue's directly linked scope.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed set is small and connected to the fix. useThreadLifecycle.tsx adds the threadDetailRef input and uses it for the run-stop read. ChatView.tsx passes routeThreadDetailRef into that input (per the raw summary; the diff blob was unavailable). The browser test covers the draft case. fakeEnvironment.ts exports the existing PROJECT_ID constant so the new test can use it, with no value or behavior change. The test also mocks RPC latency tracking as a no-op, which supports test isolation. No unrelated file or behavior change appears in the evidence.

Cover the post-listing promotion path.

The test only renders an unlisted draft and asserts that no request targets its reserved thread. It never sends the draft, lists the thread, or asserts that the first reply is visible. A regression that prevents the detail read after promotion would therefore pass this test.

Extend the fixture to list the thread after the send and assert the first reply.

Thanks for investigating this and putting together the fix and regression test.

Seeing this on macOS arm64 with nightly 0.1.6-nightly.20261030.3917 and Codex. My server traces show the desktop client requesting /bounded before the thread is created and receiving thread_not_found. The server then creates the thread and stores messages normally. The mobile app loads the same conversation successfully, while desktop remains empty.

One affected thread later recovered after being settled, but I can't confirm that settling caused the recovery. Another remains affected.

This looks consistent with the diagnosis here. I haven't tested the patch.
