fix(web): back-to-back messages from you stack as one burst with a single steer label#27305

Steering twice in a row showed two separate messages, each with its own "Steer" label and a full message gap between them, so the follow-up didn't read as part of the same thought.

Back-to-back messages from you now sit together:

  • The steer label shows once for a run of steers.
  • A message followed directly by another of yours keeps 4px of row padding instead of 16px.
  • Each message keeps its time and actions below its bubble on hover, the same as any other message. An earlier version put them beside the bubble and tightened the corners; that read oddly, so both are gone.
  • Only your own messages group. Guest, automation, and agent messages keep their current layout.

The grouping flags (groupedWithNext, continuesSteer) are derived in deriveMessagesTimelineRows, next to the existing continuesWorkLog, and compared in isRowUnchanged so a live second steer updates the first. MessagesTimeline.logic.test.ts has a case for this.

Checked in the web dev app on a real thread with two back-to-back messages, hovering the first one (before left, after right):

two back-to-back messages with the first hovered: before, time and actions beside the bubble with tightened corners; after, time and actions below the bubble and round corners

Two back-to-back steers, before (left) and after (right) the single steer label

check:changed passes, and MessagesTimeline.logic.test.ts passes (91 tests). Mobile grouping is in #27373.

Reviewed with sol-loop: 3 rounds, gpt-6.1-sol at xhigh plus Opus 5.5 at high (sol hit a rate limit). Verdicts: merge-ready, merge-ready. The later hover change only removes code.

Walkthrough

The timeline now marks adjacent own user messages for grouping and identifies steer messages that continue a preceding steer. Grouped rows adjust bubble shape and metadata placement. Coarse-pointer layouts keep metadata below the bubble.

Changes: Timeline message grouping

Layer / File(s)Summary
Group adjacent user messages
apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.logic.test.ts
Timeline rows gain previous- and next-message grouping flags and a steer continuation flag. The logic sets these flags for adjacent own user messages and includes them in row equality. The test covers two consecutive steers and an ungrouped initiating prompt.
Render grouped user message rows
apps/web/src/components/chat/TimelineUserMessageRow.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.tsx
Grouped messages use a horizontal layout on regular pointers and a vertical layout on coarse pointers. Rows adjust bubble corners and metadata placement, and omit the steer marker for continuing steers. The spacing expression is reformatted without changing its conditions or values.

Explanation

The title names the main change: back-to-back messages from the user now render as one visual burst with a single steer label. It matches the summarized changes to MessagesTimeline.logic.ts and TimelineUserMessageRow.tsx. It is specific and follows the conventional commit format. The fix(web) prefix matches the web-only scope of the changes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description clearly explains the problem, the implementation, and verification results, including screenshots and test coverage. It does not provide the required scope and approval information. It also conflicts with the change summary about grouped bubble corner styling, so the intended final behavior needs clarification.

Resolution

Add the triaged issue or maintainer approval link and approval comment. If no prior approval is required, explain why this focused fix qualifies for an exemption. Clarify whether grouped bubble corners changed, since the description says that change was removed while the change summary reports corner adjustments.

Keep controls beside wide bubbles.

When the bubble and controls exceed the row width, flex-wrap moves the bubble to a new line because it has order-1. The transparent controls then occupy a separate line above the bubble, even before hover. Reserve space for the controls and constrain the bubble to the remaining width.

Fixed in a29c78c54. The row no longer wraps: the bubble and its time/actions sit in one flex-row-reverse row, the actions are shrink-0, and a wide bubble shrinks instead of moving to its own line.

@maria-rcks Thanks. The supplied code addresses this finding: the controls use shrink-0, and the min-w-0 bubble can shrink within the non-wrapping row. The touch layout still places the controls below the bubble.

Include grouping flags in stable row comparisons.

When a second steer arrives, useStableRows can reuse the first row because isRowUnchanged does not compare these flags. The first row then retains its ungrouped spacing and controls until its message changes or the view reloads. Compare all three flags in the message-row case and add a regression test for an appended steer. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Fixed in 1c521377c. isRowUnchanged now compares groupedWithPrevious, groupedWithNext, and continuesSteer, and the grouping test stabilizes rows across an appended steer while reusing the first entry object. It fails without the fix.

@maria-rcks Thanks for the fix. The supplied code confirms that isRowUnchanged compares all three grouping flags. Reusing the first entry object in the appended-steer regression test targets the stale-row case directly.

When groupedWithNext flips to true, StackedBubbleRow inserts a new <div> around children, remounting CollapsibleUserMessageBody and resetting its local expanded state, so a previously expanded message collapses. Keep the wrapper rendered in both layouts and switch its classes instead.

Fixed in 81f106bdc. StackedBubbleRow always renders the same wrapper (contents when not stacked), so CollapsibleUserMessageBody keeps its tree position and expanded state when a message joins a burst.

Keep the bubble's tree position stable when stacked changes.

StackedBubbleRow returns children directly when stacked is false. When stacked is true, it wraps children in a new <div>. The bubble's parent element type changes when the next message joins the burst. React then unmounts and remounts the whole bubble subtree.

The commit messages say this case is expected: the first message gains groupedWithNext when a second one arrives. The remount resets the following state on the first message:

  • CollapsibleUserMessageBody expanded state, so a "Show full message" the user opened collapses again.
  • Video and audio playback state.
  • Loaded image elements.

Always render the wrapper. Use contents when not stacked, so the children still lay out in the parent flex column.

Cover non-steer user messages.

The current test uses inputIntent: "steer" for both messages. A steer-only grouping implementation would pass it. Add ordinary unattributed user messages to this boundary test.
