Problem

Settings → Providers → Update now ran the installer inside the client's RPC request. When that request was interrupted (the tab reloaded or closed, the window navigated away, or a remote client dropped), the command scope's finalizer killed the installer partway through the install. Then the provider stayed on "Updating" until the server restarted.

Reproduced on main (dd14848153) with a fresh dev server, OpenCode pointed at a scratch npm-global @opencode/cli@2.2.1:

  1. Click Update now (npm install -g --prefix <prefix> --allow-scripts=@opencode/cli @opencode/cli@latest).
  2. Reload the tab 3 s later.
  3. npm is killed partway through the install: error process terminated / error signal SIGTERM / unfinished npm timer reify / exit 1. The OpenCode row and the sidebar stay on "Updating · Running npm install…" with no npm process left.

On Linux, npm's SIGTERM handler rolls the install back. On Windows the kill gives npm no chance to roll back, which would leave the state in the report: a placeholder @opencode/cli/bin/opencode.exe, an invalid @opencode/cli-windows-x64-baseline package, and renamed shims.

Change

  • ProviderMaintenanceRunner is now built once in the server's route layer (server.ts), next to ServerSelfUpdate. Each WebSocket connection receives that one instance with Layer.succeed (ws.ts) instead of building its own runner.
  • updateProvider forks the locked update into the runner's server-lifetime scope, and the caller joins it. An interrupted caller now only stops waiting: the installer keeps running and records its final state, which a reloaded client reads from the provider snapshot. Server shutdown still stops the update, as before.
  • Because there is now one runner, the "already running" marker and the install lock are shared by all clients. Before, each connection had its own, so two clients could run npm install -g on the same prefix at the same time.
  • A queued update whose caller goes away now runs once the lock frees up, instead of staying "queued".

Scope and approval

Fixes pingdotgg/t3code#27056

Triaged via the automated issue flow; GitCafe issue #27056.

Verification

  • Red test first. providerMaintenanceRunner > keeps the update command running and records its result when the caller is interrupted fails on main with interrupting the updateProvider caller killed the running npm install: expected [ 'kill' ] to deeply equal [] and passes with the fix.
  • vp test run apps/server/src/provider/providerMaintenanceRunner.test.ts: 19/19.
  • vp test run apps/server/src/ws.test.ts: 9/9.
  • vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck of 3 packages, tests).
  • The existing queued-interrupt test is renamed to describe its new behaviour.

Runtime transcript (real dev server and web client in a browser, fresh database, the same scratch prefix, the same steps: Update now, then reload after 3 s):

main (dd14848153)this branch
npm debug log after the reload98 error process terminated · 99 error signal SIGTERM · 100 silly unfinished npm timer reify · 105 verbose exit 190 info run @opencode/cli@2.2.2 postinstall { code: 0, signal: null } · 100 verbose exit 0
opencode --version afterwardsv2.2.1 (npm rolled back on Linux)v2.2.2
UI after the reloadstays on "Updating · Running npm install…" with no npm processOpenCode shows v2.2.2 with no update pending

An intermediate version of this fix forked into the scope of the per-connection layer. Every Update now was then interrupted after about 1 ms (trace: ws.rpc.server.updateProvider ended Interrupted). That is why the runner moved to the server layer, and the test helper now builds the real layer rather than calling make().

Not checked:

  • cannot-verify windows: the reporter's platform. This fixes the confirmed way an update gets killed partway (a client interruption). It does not address a possible Windows lock on opencode.exe while a T3-owned opencode serve is running, which the report raises but does not confirm.
  • Server shutdown during an update still stops the installer, as on main.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 548ee1d

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Provider updates now survive client disconnects, with shared installation locks across clients. Existing compatibility checks, timeout, and final-state reporting remain in place, limiting the change to completion of explicitly requested updates.

Walkthrough

Provider updates now run in the runner’s captured service scope, so caller interruption does not stop an in-progress command. The server provides a shared runner to routes and WebSocket RPC layers. Tests cover queued updates and an interrupted OpenCode update that later succeeds.

Change: Bug fix

Possibly related issues

  • OpenCode CLI unavailable after provider update attempt on Windows — both concern the provider update flow. This change keeps the update running after caller interruption; it does not address the reported Windows installation failure or confirm its cause.

Explanation

The description includes all required sections. It explains the problem and reproduction, the implementation and scope, linked issue approval, focused verification results, runtime evidence, and unverified Windows behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed runner, server-layer wiring, WebSocket-layer wiring, and tests directly support [#27056]. They keep provider updates running after client interruption, share the running marker and install lock across clients, and verify the resulting state. No unrelated change is shown.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#27056] requests a clean Windows update while an OpenCode server is active. It requests coordination only if executable locking is confirmed. This PR moves updates to a server-lifetime scope, shares the update lock, and tests completion after caller interruption. The PR evidence does not test Windows or establish whether an active opencode.exe lock caused the reported failure. Compliance with the linked report therefore remains unconfirmed.

Resolution

Provide a controlled Windows reproduction with the T3-owned server active. Record the installer result and the post-update package, shim, and PATH state. Use that evidence to determine whether the linked Windows scenario is covered.

Exercise lock contention in the queued-interruption test.

withCommandLock calls onQueued before it calls locks.withLock. This test has no competing update, so it blocks the first call before lock acquisition instead of placing an update behind a held npm-global lock. The test does prove that this first call records succeeded before the retry starts, so the retry cannot satisfy firstFinished.

Use two providers that share the lock: hold the first command, start the second update, interrupt the second caller while it waits for the lock, then assert a completion state for the second provider before retrying it.

Wait for marker release before starting the second update.

firstFinished completes inside the state-recording callback. The coordinator clears the running-provider marker only after that callback returns. If the waiting test fiber resumes first, the second update fails with “already running” even though the first update will finish correctly. Synchronize on marker release before asserting that a new update succeeds. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per path instructions, “Tests should await a specific milestone” and must not use sleeps or polling.
