Stacked on #27176.

The server's memory protection (MemoryLow) only takes effect when every cgroup above it grants protection too: user.slice, user-$UID.slice and user@$UID.service. Only root can set those. So far the one machine with that protection (nucbox-1) got it from a hand-made "resource guard", and we want to retire that guard in favour of T3's own setup. Without the guard the server, and the cloudflared tunnel it runs, fall back to the default OOM score while agents sit at +800. The headless preview browser inherits whatever the server has.

t3 service protect

It runs as the user. Run as root, it refuses before resolving any config, so it never creates root-owned files in ~/.t3. It asks for sudo only to write a generated script's files under /etc.

  1. If tailscaled or sshd is loaded (by canonical name, so Debian's sshd.service alias counts once), it asks separately: "Also protect tailscaled and ssh so you can still reach this machine under memory pressure?" The default is no.
  2. It prints every drop-in it will write, with its settings, then asks "Apply these settings?".
  3. As the user, it writes ~/.config/systemd/user.conf.d/90-t3code-protect.conf (DefaultOOMScoreAdjust=200) first. A user manager left unset gives its services its own score plus 100, which would mean -800 for every user service once the manager runs at -900. That's why the guard set this too.
  4. sudo /bin/sh -c <script> then:
    • writes /etc/systemd/system/{user.slice, user-$UID.slice, user@$UID.service}.d/90-t3code-protect.conf with MemoryLow=2G (this covers the app.slice and init.scope allowances below);
    • adds OOMScoreAdjust=-900 for the user manager;
    • if remote access was chosen, adds system.slice MemoryLow=512M and MemoryLow=256M + OOMScoreAdjust=-900 for each remote-access unit;
    • runs daemon-reload, then writes each of those units' configured score to its running main process. That lets the manager hand -900 to the server at its next restart without a reboot, and lets tailscaled and sshd take theirs without a restart.
  5. As the user, it writes app.slice MemoryLow=1536M, init.scope MemoryLow=256M, and t3code.service OOMScoreAdjust=-900, then runs systemctl --user daemon-reload.

--undo goes through the same steps in reverse: user drop-ins, then root drop-ins plus the score sync, which restores each process to its unit's score with ours gone, then user.conf.d. It keeps the shared drop-ins (user.slice, system.slice, tailscaled, sshd) while another user's protection remains. It only deletes files named 90-t3code-protect.conf, so admin drop-ins such as the guard's 90-fleet-resource-guard.conf or 95-heap.conf are never touched. That's also why it doesn't use systemctl set-property: undoing that means systemctl revert, which wipes every drop-in of the unit. --yes answers every question, remote access included.

I chose -900 rather than the guard's -1000: it keeps these processes near the bottom of the kill order, while the kernel can still kill them as a last resort if one of them leaks.

Status

t3 service status now reports what the kernel actually applies, whoever configured it:

1 Memory protection: off, user.slice grants none. Run `t3 service protect`.
2 OOM score: 200

or Memory protection: on (t3 service protect) and OOM score: -900.

Without protect

  • The unit sets OOMScoreAdjust=100. That's the user manager's own score and the lowest an unprivileged manager may set (systemd ignores a refused value instead of failing the unit). It puts the server and its cloudflared child below other user services (200) and agents (800). Hosts that have run protect override it with the drop-in. The relay client runs in-process, so it shares the server's protection.
  • The preview browser runs in an agent scope (t3code-preview-browser-*.scope in the owned agents slice). Playwright only takes an executable path, so the server writes a launcher that runs AgentScope.wrap's command. It deletes the launcher once Playwright's whole launch call settles, since Playwright retries the same path after a glibc ld.so race. Chrome's pipes on fds 3/4 survive systemd-run --scope; I checked that on the host with a throwaway scope outside T3's slices. Chrome now gets the agents' +800, low CPU weight and memory limits, instead of inheriting the server's protection. AppArmor still matches, because the real binary is what gets exec'd, and diagnostics still receive the real binary path. The short-lived, capped Chrome runs in the HTML renderer stay in the server's cgroup.

Not covered

  • On cgroup v1 hosts the status reads no memory.low and reports "off". protect can't help there either.
  • Agents and the preview browser now share the agents slice's memory limits, so under agent memory pressure the preview browser is throttled too.
  • protect doesn't size its values from RAM. On a small VPS, MemoryLow=2G on user.slice is soft protection, which the kernel spreads proportionally when everything is protected.
  • None of this was applied on a live host. The root script was exercised in tests only (see below).

Tests

  • serviceProtection.test.ts: runs the rendered root script for real under /bin/sh, against a temporary directory and a fake systemctl. It checks the drop-in contents, that undo leaves an unrelated admin drop-in alone, and the score sync, using a child process owned by the test (raising a score needs no privilege). A fake sudo checks the ordering: the manager default exists before root runs, a refused sudo writes no user drop-ins, and undo runs in reverse. A table test covers detection of the Debian alias and of Fedora's sshd.
  • AgentScope.test.ts: the launcher file keeps the PID and the OOM raise, and passes the caller's arguments. ServerBrowserContexts.test.ts: both launch paths receive the launcher path, and it is released only after the launch settles.
  • bootService.test.ts: the unit carries OOMScoreAdjust=100.
  • service.test.ts: a root protect creates no T3 directories. serviceProtection.test.ts also covers undo with two protected users, and memory.min counting as protection.
  • vp run check:changed passes.

Explanation

The title "feat(server): t3 service protect keeps the server alive when agents fill memory" is a conventional commit title that names the main change. The changeset adds the t3 service protect command, which applies systemd memory and OOM protection so the server survives agent memory pressure. The title is specific and related to the primary change. It does not cover the unit OOMScoreAdjust change, the preview browser launcher, or the status output, which is acceptable for a title.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification, and an agent attribution line. The Problem section explains that the server's MemoryLow protection depends on every parent cgroup granting protection, and that agents run at OOM score +800. The Change section describes the protect command steps, undo behavior, status output, and the unit and preview browser changes. The Scope and approval section is missing. It does not link a triaged bug issue or maintainer-approved discussion, and it does not explain a focused-fix or configuration exemption. The Verification section lists focused tests and states that check:changed passed, and it lists what was not checked on a live host. The main gap is the missing approval link or exemption explanation. The description also says it is stacked on another PR, which is useful context. The model line is present at the end.

Resolution

Add a Scope and approval section. Link the triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion, including the approval comment. If no prior approval exists, explain why this change qualifies under the template's configuration or focused-fix exemption. The change adds a new command and new behavior, so the template's broader approval requirement likely applies. Also confirm the stacked base PR and its approval status.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The PR adds sudo-backed memory protection and browser isolation, but also changes the server unit’s default OOM priority without requiring opt-in. Human review is needed to accept that default and its memory-pressure trade-offs.

If NodeFSP.mkdir(directory) fails, the request rejects without releasing the launcher, leaving its executable orphaned; retries accumulate more orphaned files. The launcher is acquired before mkdir, but release runs only inside launch(). Move directory preparation into the launch() callback so its finally releases the launcher on this failure too.

Valid; fixed in a8c7398c64. I took a simpler route than the one suggested: createContext now creates the profile directory before it asks for a launcher, so a failed mkdir rejects with no launcher created and nothing to release. A new test (creates no launcher for a profile whose storage cannot be created) makes mkdir fail and asserts that the launcher is never requested. It failed before the fix.

Await the launch milestone instead of polling.

vi.waitFor polls the mocked launch with a wall-clock timeout. A delayed test worker can fail this test before the launch starts. Resolve a promise inside the launches.launch mock and await that promise before checking release.

As per coding guidelines, “No yieldNow or sleep polling loops. Await the Deferred, take from the Queue, or drain the worker.” As per path instructions, “Tests must await real milestones rather than sleep or poll.”

Valid; fixed in cc7bab075a. The launches.launch mock resolves a started promise, and the test awaits that before asserting release hasn't run. No vi.waitFor is left.

@juliusmarminge The supplied code confirms the fix. The test awaits started.promise before checking release, with no vi.waitFor polling.

Preserve browser diagnostics when the async launcher fails.

launchOptions() calls this.options.launcher?.(executable) before launch() installs the diagnose error mapping. Therefore, failures from the replacement-executable launcher bypass PreviewBrowserHost.diagnoseLaunchFailure for both shared browsers and persistent contexts. Move launcher resolution inside the shared launch boundary so both paths preserve the existing browser-start error contract.

Valid; fixed in cc7bab075a. launch() now acquires the launcher inside its own try/catch/finally and hands the resulting path to the Playwright call. Launcher failures therefore get the same diagnose mapping (against the real Chrome binary), and the launcher is released on every path, for both the shared browser and persistent contexts. New test: diagnoses a launcher failure against the real executable. It failed before the fix.

@juliusmarminge The supplied code confirms the fix. Both launch paths acquire the launcher inside launch()’s try block. Launcher failures reach diagnose with the real executable, and finally releases an acquired launcher after the launch settles.

Note that if the kernel does not reset the watchdog on kexec (depending on the specific hardware and/or driver), in this case the watchdog might not get disabled after kexec succeeds and thus the system might get rebooted, unless `RuntimeWatchdogSec=` is also enabled at the same time. ... Configures the default timeouts for starting, stopping and aborting of units, as well as the default time to sleep between automatic restarts of units, as configured per-unit in `TimeoutStartSec=`, `TimeoutStopSec=`, `TimeoutAbortSec=` and `RestartSec=` (for services, see systemd.service(5) for details on the per-unit settings). ... `DefaultOOMScoreAdjust=`¶ ... Rate limiting for daemon-reload and (since v256) daemon-reexec requests.
6
7`DefaultOOMPolicy=`¶
8
9
10Configure the default policy for reacting to processes being killed by the Linux Out-Of-Memory (OOM) killer or systemd-oomd. This may be used to pick a global default for the per-unit `OOMPolicy=` setting. See systemd.service(5) for details. Note that this default is not used for services that have `Delegate=` turned on.
11
12Added in version 243.
13
14`DefaultOOMScoreAdjust=`¶
15
16
17Configures the default OOM score adjustments of processes run by the service manager. This defaults to unset (meaning the forked off processes inherit the service manager&#39;s OOM score adjustment value), except if the service manager is run for an unprivileged user, in which case this defaults to the service manager&#39;s OOM adjustment value plus 100 (this makes service processes slightly more likely to be killed under memory pressure than the manager itself). This may be used to pick a global default for the per-unit `OOMScoreAdjust=` setting. See systemd.exec(5) for details. Note that this setting has no effect on the OOM score adjustment value of the service manager process itself, it retains the original value set during its invocation.
18
19Added in version 250.
20
21`DefaultSmackProcessLabel=`¶
22
23
24Takes a `SMACK64` security label as the argument. The process executed by a unit will be started under this label if `SmackProcessLabel=` is not set in the unit. See systemd.exec(5) for the details.
25
26If the value is &quot;`/`&quot;, only labels specified with `SmackProcessLabel=` are assigned and the compile-time default is ignored.
27
28Added in version 252.
29
30`ReloadLimitIntervalSec=`, `ReloadLimitBurst=`¶
31
32
33Rate limiting for daemon-reload and (since v256) daemon-reexec requests. The setting applies to both operations, but the rate limits are tracked separately. Defaults to unset, and any number of operations can be requested at any time. `ReloadLimitIntervalSec=` takes a value in seconds to configure the rate limit window, and `ReloadLimitBurst=` takes a positive integer to configure the maximum allowed number of operations within the configured time window.
34
35Added in version 253.
36
37`DefaultMemoryPressureWatch=`, `DefaultMemoryPressureThresholdSec=`¶
38
39
40Configures the default settings for the per-unit `MemoryPressureWatch=` and `MemoryPressureThresholdSec=` settings. See systemd.resource-control(5) for details. Defaults to &quot;`auto`&quot; and &quot;`200ms`&quot;, respectively. This also sets the memory pressure monitoring threshold for the service manager itself.

50### Manager State Commands¶
51
52daemon-reload¶
53
54
55Reload the systemd manager configuration. This will rerun all generators (see systemd.generator(7)), reload all unit files, and recreate the entire dependency tree. While the daemon is being reloaded, all sockets systemd listens on behalf of user configuration will stay accessible.
56
57This command should not be confused with the reload command.
58
59daemon-reexec¶
60
61
62Reexecute the systemd manager. This will serialize the manager state, reexecute the process and deserialize the state again. This command is of little use except for debugging and package upgrades. Sometimes, it might be helpful as a heavy-weight daemon-reload. While the daemon is being reexecuted, all sockets systemd listening on behalf of user configuration will stay accessible.
63
64log-level [`LEVEL`]¶
65
66
67If no argument is given, print the current log level of the manager. If an optional argument `LEVEL` is provided, then the command changes the current log level of the manager to `LEVEL` (accepts the same values as `--log-level=` described in systemd(1)).

Roll back the manager default when the privileged step fails.

applyProtection writes DefaultOOMScoreAdjust=200 before invoking sudo. A failed sudo command returns an error, but no cleanup removes this file. systemd reads it when the user manager starts, so a later restart applies the value to services that do not override OOMScoreAdjust, even though protection reported failure.

8Update applyProtection so a failed runPrivileged call removes
9plan.managerDefaults before propagating the original error, preventing the

Valid; fixed in cc7bab075a. On stock systemd ≥250 a leftover DefaultOOMScoreAdjust=200 equals the default anyway, but it's still a side effect left behind by a step that reported failure. applyProtection now records whether the file existed beforehand, and removes it if sudo fails and this run created it. The ordering test's refused-sudo case now asserts the manager default is gone afterwards. It failed before the fix.

@juliusmarminge Thanks. The reported fix addresses the leftover-file issue and preserves a pre-existing manager-default file. The refused-sudo assertion covers the failure path from this finding.

🟠 High cloud/serviceProtection.ts:259

If the privileged script writes the user@<uid>.service drop-in and then fails at systemctl daemon-reload, this handler deletes DefaultOOMScoreAdjust=200 but leaves OOMScoreAdjust=-900 installed. On the next manager start, ordinary user services default to -800, undermining the intended OOM isolation; retain the manager default until the system drop-ins are rolled back or their removal is confirmed.

Valid, and my previous rollback introduced it. Fixed in 333eed9ebd: after a failed sudo, applyProtection removes the manager default only when this run created it and the user@$UID.service drop-in doesn't exist. A partial run that already lowered the manager therefore keeps DefaultOOMScoreAdjust=200, and --undo or a rerun cleans up both together. A refusal before anything was written still leaves nothing behind. The ordering test now covers both cases: a sudo that fails after writing the manager drop-in keeps the default, and a refused one removes it. The new case failed before the fix.
