Problem

Linking to an https peer whose certificate this machine does not trust says "Nothing answered as a T3 Code environment". The peer is there, so the user looks for a wrong address instead of a certificate problem. PeerLinks.describe ends with Effect.option, which drops the TLS error.

Change

  • describe now fails with an unreachable error that names the origin and Node's TLS code, such as DEPTH_ZERO_SELF_SIGNED_CERT. Every other failure still means "no environment here".
  • Link status and resolve go through answersAs, which still treats an untrusted address as not answering. One bad address never fails the list or blocks the next address, and the token still goes only to an address that answers as the peer.

The "picked machine" path keeps its generic message when results are mixed, because an existing test pins it.

Scope and approval

This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so it has no prior issue. The error names the wrong cause for a real failure. The change touches one probe in apps/server/src/peer/PeerLinks.ts and only affects linked environments, a Labs feature.

Verification

  • vp test run src/peer/PeerLinks.test.ts: a new test links to an https listener with a self-signed test certificate. On main it fails with not_a_t3_environment. With the fix, it passes, and a stored link skips the untrusted address to reach the peer.
  • vp test run src/peer/ (62 tests) and vp run check:changed pass.

Walkthrough

Peer link probing now reports recognized TLS certificate errors as unreachable. Ordinary probe failures remain non-matches. Status checks and credential resolution use environment identity matching. Tests verify that an untrusted HTTPS peer is not stored and that resolution can select a valid peer URL.

Add a resolve test that passes an untrusted address before the peer.

The new certificate test covers only links.link. The mixed-address test stores only [b.url], so resolve never receives an untrusted or impostor candidate before the matching peer. A regression in resolve that stops at the certificate error, or that returns the impostor URL, would not fail any test in the peer test files. The PR changes resolve to use answersAs, so this path needs direct coverage.

  • test(server): resolve skips an untrusted peer addressce9210e
Synced from GitHub

Both CodeRabbit nitpicks are addressed in ce9210e8e1c. answersAs is now Effect.fn("PeerLinks.answersAs"). The certificate test also stores a link with an untrusted address ahead of the peer, then checks that resolve returns the peer's address and that the link status is reachable. That test fails if answersAs stops falling back past the certificate error.

Preserve certificate errors for mixed probe results.

When link receives expectedEnvironmentId, an untrusted address and an offline alternate produce mixed results. This branch then discards the certificate error and returns only a generic unreachable message. Include certificate refusals when no address matches, and cover this case in the existing test.

Match the Node TLS codes INVALID_CA and INVALID_PURPOSE in certificateErrorCode.

certificateErrorCode matches only codes that contain CERT, SELF_SIGNED, UNABLE_TO_GET, or UNABLE_TO_VERIFY. Node can report a rejected peer certificate with INVALID_CA or INVALID_PURPOSE. Neither code matches, so describe returns no descriptor. link then reports not_a_t3_environment, not the unreachable certificate error that describe is meant to return for an untrusted certificate.

  • fix(server): name more TLS verification codes for peer linksfd95b42
Synced from GitHub

Follow-up on CodeRabbit's second review:

  • TLS codes. Fixed in fd95b42e5df. certificateErrorCode now also matches INVALID_CA, INVALID_PURPOSE, PATH_LENGTH_EXCEEDED, and HOSTNAME_MISMATCH.
  • Mixed probe results. Not changed. When some addresses answer and others are refused, answeringAs deliberately reports only the addresses it tried. The existing test linking a picked machine that answers nowhere names it and links nothing pins that exact message for a plain-http refusal mixed with a wrong environment. Showing certificate refusals there would change that behavior for every refusal kind. That is a separate decision from this fix.

Add focused coverage for the expanded certificate matcher.

The new expression adds several certificate-error classes and cause-chain traversal. The supplied test covers only DEPTH_ZERO_SELF_SIGNED_CERT; it does not cover the added classifications or a nested cause. Add focused cases for representative new codes and one wrapped cause. Extend the existing certificate test where possible.

As per coding guidelines, backend behavior changes must ship with focused tests for that behavior. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Use neutral wording when the TLS code is a hostname mismatch.

The certificate matcher also accepts ERR_TLS_CERT_ALTNAME_INVALID, because its CERT alternative matches that code. Node reports this code for a host name or IP address that does not match the certificate. It does not mean the certificate is untrusted. The untrusted-certificate message still reaches the user, so the user is told to fix trust on this machine when the actual problem is the address used to reach the peer.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @eyeveil

Both findings are fixed in 07d1da32956.

  • Wording. The error now says the peer "presented a certificate this machine rejected" and keeps the origin and code. That fits a hostname mismatch (ERR_TLS_CERT_ALTNAME_INVALID, HOSTNAME_MISMATCH) as well as an untrusted issuer.
  • Coverage. A new test checks certificateErrorCode for each recognized code, a code two levels deep in cause, and two errors that must not match. I test the matcher directly, because a real hostname-mismatch handshake reaches the self-signed check first unless the test trusts its certificate for the whole process. The existing self-signed link test still covers the end-to-end path.

@eyeveil Verified both changes in 07d1da32956.

  • The wording covers hostname mismatch and issuer-trust failures. It retains the origin and error code.
  • The matcher test covers the added codes, a two-level nested cause, and two non-matching errors.
  • The existing self-signed test still covers linking failure, address fallback, and reachable status.

Direct matcher coverage is appropriate for the added classifications. Both findings are addressed. I inspected the code but did not run tests.

Note

Written by gpt-6.1-sol on behalf of Maria

thanks, eyeveil. your implementation preserves TLS rejection details without weakening verification, and the real HTTPS regression also protects stored-link fallback.

rebuilt as https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/28060 because github rejected the fork push with 403 despite reporting maintainer edits enabled. the replacement covers the same linking diagnostic and safe fallback behavior, with release credit retained in the commit trailer. this pr remains open.

i compared the original diff against the replacement. production behavior, certificate fixtures, matcher coverage, and fallback assertions are retained. only the test listener's unnecessary HTTP 404 handler and extra platform layer were removed; its HTTPS server remains alive through the outer test scope.

verification: the HTTPS regression fails on current main and passes with the fix; 66 peer tests passed, the simplified module's 13 tests passed, and blacksmith vp run check:changed passed. matching Chrome before/after captures are in the replacement. native desktop/mobile and non-loopback remote TLS remain unverified; ci is pending.
