Problem

Sensitive provider instance environment variables (API keys, tokens) can only hold a pasted value, so a secret already kept in a password manager has to be copied into T3 Code's secret storage and kept in sync by hand.

Change

 • A sensitive environment variable can point at a configured secret provider with a reference such as op://vault/item/field instead of holding a value. Settings store only the provider id and the reference; a value previously stored for that variable is removed.
 • The server reads references through the 1Password CLI with the provider's account when it builds a provider instance. All references for an account are read in one call, so one unlock covers them, and each result is held in memory for the server's life.
 • Only an explicit provider refresh in Settings (web or mobile) reads the references again, through a new reloadSecrets flag; background refreshes (usage polling, reconnects, model catalog) never prompt the vault. A re-read rebuilds only the instances whose values changed or that were unavailable; a failed re-read keeps a working instance on its previous value. A reference that cannot be read on first build marks that provider unavailable and names the variable, instead of starting the agent with a blank credential.
 • Startup does not wait on the vault: instances with references show as unavailable with "Reading secrets…" while the read runs in the background, so a locked 1Password at login does not hold the server.
 • Paths that do not resolve references (terminal, usage, installation) leave a referenced variable to the inherited environment instead of overriding it with an empty value.
 • The settings UI offers a source picker next to sensitive variables, behind T3CODE_FEATURE_SECRETS, and only when the connected server advertises support. Older servers ignore the reference, since it is a sibling field.
 • The picker wraps the shared SecretInput, so the other secret inputs (provider password fields, source-control tokens, usage-limit keys, device host credentials) can opt in later without new machinery.
 • Secret providers live in their own packages, following the source-control-* layout: @t3tools/secret-provider-core holds the provider definition, the server driver contract, and the caching SecretResolver; @t3tools/secret-provider-onepassword holds the op:// reference rules and the op driver; @t3tools/secret-provider-definitions is the built-in registry both sides read. Another provider is a new package plus one line in the registry and one in the server's driver list.
 • RPC authorization checks a settings update against its decoded shape, since middleware receives the payload already decoded. Re-decoding a settings update that carried a reference threw and closed the WebSocket.

Scope and approval

Follow-up to #25709, where connecting provider inputs to secrets was agreed as the next slice. This PR covers only provider instance environment variables and only the one_password kind already defined in the secretProviders settings envelope. The remaining inputs come as separate PRs, one per input.

Verification

 • secret-provider-core SecretResolver.test.ts: reads once and holds the value, holds a failed read until invalidated, batches an account's references into one op inject, falls back to single reads when the batch fails, and never runs op for unsupported providers or non-op:// references. Uses a fake op spawner, never the real CLI.
 • secret-provider-onepassword definition.test.ts and driver.test.ts: reference rules, batched op inject parsing, and the timeout that skips per-reference fallback.
 • RpcAuthorization.test.ts: a provider-only settings update carrying a reference is allowed (failed before the change with Expected string | undefined at ...environment[0].value).
 • ProviderInstanceRegistry.test.ts: the driver is created with the resolved secret and no reference, the instance is unavailable naming OPENAI_API_KEY when the reference cannot be read, a refresh re-reads and rebuilds only when the value changed, a failed reload keeps the instance live, and startup does not wait on the read.
 • instanceEnvironment.test.ts: a referenced variable keeps the inherited value (failed before the change with '').
 • serverSettings.test.ts: pointing a variable at a reference removes its stored secret and keeps the reference in client settings.
 • settings.test.ts, ProviderInstanceCard.test.ts, and SecretSourceInput.browser.test.tsx: reference decoding, the settings draft update, and switching, clearing, and rejecting references in the picker.
 • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck pass. Test failures locally are limited to files this PR does not touch (git commands in temp repos, case-insensitive filesystem, a flaky Codex adapter test).
 • Before/after captures of the provider environment section to follow.

Please move secret reload followed by provider refresh into a domain service operation. This adds feature-specific conditional, multi-step dispatch to the RPC handler; the transport should call one service method that owns refresh ordering, rather than coordinate the instance mutator and provider registry itself.

Posted via Macroscope — Effect Service Conventions

Fixed in b05724eae4: ProviderRegistry.reloadSecretsAndRefresh owns the reload then refresh, and the RPC handler calls only that method. Covered by ProviderRegistry.test.ts and ws.test.ts.

Please define this new service with Context.Service and its interface inline, using SecretResolver["Service"] for method types. The standalone SecretResolverShape and default-backed Context.Reference do not follow the canonical service definition; acquire the resolver through its layer rather than silently substituting a no-op implementation. This requires updating the tag and its consumers together.

Posted via Macroscope — Effect Service Conventions

Fixed in b05724eae4: SecretResolver is now a Context.Service with its interface inline, built with SecretResolver.of and provided through layer. Covered by SecretResolver.test.ts and ProviderInstanceRegistry.test.ts.

Please replace raw CLI stderr, reference strings, and String(error) log annotations with bounded, normalized diagnostics (for example, stage, exit status, and reference count). The new logging here and in readTogether/bounded exposes command output and arbitrary failure text, which the service conventions prohibit even if the CLI normally avoids printing secrets. Update all three logging boundaries; preserve underlying errors only as causes where applicable.

Posted via Macroscope — Effect Service Conventions

Fixed in b05724eae4: logs now carry only stage, exit code, reference count, or the error tag. Stderr, references, the account, and String(error) are no longer logged.

nonEmpty strips leading and trailing whitespace from successfully read secrets, so a password such as " pass " reaches the driver as "pass" and authentication fails. Use trimming only to test whether the value is empty, and return the original value.

Fixed in b05724eae4: values are returned verbatim, trimming only decides emptiness, and the batch separator follows every reference so op's trailing newline stays out of the values. SecretResolver.test.ts asserts a value with surrounding whitespace survives.

Provider environment settings now accept secret references. The server resolves supported references before creating provider instances and can reload them, rebuilding instances when resolved values change. Provider settings expose secret-source inputs, and provider refresh requests reload secrets before refreshing provider data.

153And interpolate the variable into the `op item edit` or `op item create` commands:
154
155`op item edit exampeItem "section1.field1[text]=$(echo $VALUE_WITH_NEWLINES)"`
156
157By the way, I noticed you wrote "(as before)" in your original post, I am wondering if newlines had worked for you in setting field values in the CLI v1? I ask because I have not been able to do so, for example:
158
159`op1 create item login --vault demo --title exampleItem notesPlain="A\nb\n3"`
160
161Results in a username field that also contains the raw `\n` chars instead of newlines.

171About the "before": I created some SSH "templates" and filled them with multiline text quite some time ago. I'm pretty sure I did that using the CLI (v1), though I can't remember the details...

181Hey @XIII ,
182
183Gotcha, I think templates would have worked with newlines in v1. I simply tried with the field assignments.

Creating and editing items with the command-line tool is now easier than ever, thanks to the new field assignment syntax. You can create, delete and update custom fields of an item (and even change their type) with just one command, for example: ` op item edit 'database' 'creds.db2_admin_username[text]=dbadmin2' 'creds.db2_admin_pw[password]=RTA@gug9vmn7xey7pbq' ` We've also made a number of small improvements and bug fixes.
191
192### 2.7.0 (build #2070002) – released 2022-08-30
193
194This release prepares support for sharing SSH items and allows for default values to be specified for template variables used in secret references in either `op inject` or `op run`.
195
196#### Improvements
197
198 * Default values for template variables can now be specified in environment files used with `op run` and in configuration files used with `op inject`. {2307}
199 * Prepare support for sharing SSH items. After support is added on 1password.com, item-sharing for SSH keys will work from this version onwards. {2700}

Reject template delimiters in SecretReferencePath.

A schema-valid reference can add another op inject directive to the batch template. For example:

text
1op://Private/OpenAI/credential }} {{ op://Private/Anthropic/key

The batch can resolve both references inside one separator-delimited segment. The output count still matches the input count, so the independent-read fallback does not run. The provider environment can then receive the additional secret.

Reject {, }, and line breaks in SecretReferencePath.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @yordis

Fixed in b05724eae4: SecretReferencePath now only decodes the 1Password op:// reference syntax, so braces, line breaks, and a leading dash cannot reach the inject template. settings.test.ts rejects an injection attempt and a non op:// reference.

Length of output: 4966

@yordis Verified the fix by source inspection. SecretReferencePath now restricts references to the op:// pattern and excludes template braces. settings.test.ts includes rejection cases for the injection payload, a leading dash, and a missing op:// prefix.

This addresses the reported template-injection issue. I did not run the tests.

Do not log raw 1Password arguments or diagnostics.

result.stderr.trim() logs raw command output, and String(error) logs arbitrary defect text. The individual-read warning also logs the raw account and reference command arguments. Replacing only detail with its length is not sufficient. The DeviceBootError.diagnostics exception does not apply here.

Skip per-reference fallback after a batch timeout.

bounded converts a timed-out op inject call to undefined. The current code then runs readOne for every reference, and each call can consume the full 45-second timeout. This can hold both resolver and registry semaphores for approximately (N + 1) × 45 seconds.

Return undefined for every reference when the batch times out. Keep the per-reference fallback for completed batch failures. These results remain cached until the next settings refresh invalidates them.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @yordis

Fixed in b05724eae4: a batch timeout now returns unreadable for every reference without the per-reference fallback; a completed batch failure still falls back. SecretResolver.test.ts drives the timeout with TestClock and asserts a single op invocation.

@yordis Thanks for fixing this in b05724eae4. The reported change addresses the timeout concern and preserves fallback for completed batch failures. The TestClock test covers the single-invocation requirement.

Reject references that the selected provider cannot read.

If a user commits a nonblank path without op://, SecretReference accepts it, but SecretResolver.accountFor rejects it. The settings save succeeds while the provider becomes unavailable. Validate the selected provider’s path format before onSecretChange and show an error for an invalid commit.

Fixed in 7b2fe53b0d: the input decodes with the same contract SecretReference schema and shows an inline error for anything else. SecretSourceInput.browser.test.tsx covers the rejection.

@yordis Verified the fix in 7b2fe53b0d by source inspection. The shared SecretReference schema requires op://. Invalid commits show an inline error and do not call onSecretChange.

The browser test covers rejection of a reference without op://. I did not run the test.

Wait for a new reference before changing providers.

If a referenced variable switches sources, this call publishes the old reference with the new provider ID. The server can then read that path from a different 1Password account and rebuild the instance with the wrong credential. Keep the new provider selection pending and publish the pair only after the user commits its reference.

Fixed in 7b2fe53b0d: picking another provider only stages it, and nothing is published until a reference for that provider is committed. SecretSourceInput.browser.test.tsx covers the switch.

@yordis Thanks for fixing this in 7b2fe53b0d. Staging the provider selection until its reference is committed addresses the concern.

Remove an existing reference when its textbox is cleared.

If the user clears an existing reference and commits the blank value, this branch leaves onSecretChange uncalled. DraftInput then restores the old reference, and the provider setting keeps using it. Call onSecretChange(undefined) when the cleared reference belongs to the selected provider. Keep an uncommitted provider switch from clearing the original reference. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Cover clearing a rejected reference during a provider switch.

The provider-switch test commits a valid reference, and the empty-reference test starts without a pending provider. Add an invalid reference before clearing it. This reaches the pending-provider empty-commit branch and detects an unintended clear of the saved reference.

Check the decoded enabled state before reading secrets.

mayBeEnabled returns true when both saved flags are absent. Antigravity’s decoded default is disabled, so a valid Antigravity instance with a secret reference still triggers a vault read during startup and refresh. That read can delay startup until the 45-second timeout. A successful refresh can also rebuild the disabled instance repeatedly because its stored environment omits the reference. Use the same decoded enabled state as buildEntry before selecting references. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @yordis

Fixed in 510e74da91: the prefetch in reconcile and the reloadSecrets targets now use the same decoded enabled state as buildEntry, so an instance whose config decodes as disabled is never read, invalidated, or rebuilt on refresh. ProviderInstanceRegistry.test.ts covers it with a driver that defaults to disabled.

@yordis The supplied code confirms that prefetch and reloadSecrets now use isEntryEnabled, which decodes the config and applies the same enabled-state logic as buildEntry. This addresses the disabled-instance secret reads and refresh rebuilds.
