Problem

On mobile, settling a thread that no longer exists on its server shows a dead end. The "Could not settle thread" dialog shows raw server text like "No orchestration projection exists for thread …" with only an OK button. The stale row stays in the list, so each later attempt fails the same way. Nothing tells you why it failed or what to do. Archive, unarchive, un-settle and delete fail the same way.

Repro: keep a thread in the mobile list after the server stops having it (for example, it was deleted from another client while the phone showed a cached list), then swipe to settle it.

Change

The thread list's failure dialog now reads the server's reason and offers a next step:

  • Thread is gone (no projection, or "Thread … is deleted."): "Thread no longer exists" explains that it was probably deleted on another device and that the list is showing an old copy. It offers Keep or Remove from list.
  • Thread is archived: "Thread is archived" explains that it is already out of the active list. It offers OK or Unarchive.
  • Anything else: the server's reason as before, with OK or Try again. Retrying a settle goes through the normal settle path, so Undo is still offered. A failed Undo step offers no retry, because retrying one step alone would skip the rest of the restore.

Remove from list hides the thread on this device only. The hidden entry expires for good when the environment's shell generation next changes (the next authoritative snapshot or a rebuilt shell), or when the environment is removed. If the server still lists the thread, it comes back. The filter wraps the snapshot fed to createEnvironmentThreadShellAtoms, so every mobile list built from it drops the row. On the Archive screen, the button reloads the server's archived snapshot.

Mobile only. No contracts, server code, or shared client-runtime state change. The classifier matches the server's existing wording from Orchestrator.ts / ProjectionStore.ts, which reaches the client as the dispatch error's detail.

Scope and approval

This is a focused fix for an obvious dead end in an existing mobile dialog. The action fails, the reason is jargon, and the only button leaves the user stuck. It changes the dialog text and buttons for failed thread list actions and adds a device-local hide for threads the server confirms it doesn't have. No issue or discussion exists for it. If maintainers prefer, Remove from list can be dropped and the explained dialog kept without affecting the rest.

Verification

Focused tests in apps/mobile (vp test run --project unit on the three changed suites): 51 passed, 15 of them new. They cover:

  • the classifier: missing, deleted, archived, detail preferred over message, errors without text
  • each dialog branch and its buttons, Remove from list hiding the row, and Remove from list on an archived row reloading the archive
  • Unarchive and Try again sending the right commands, and a retried settle still offering a working Undo
  • a failed Undo step offering only OK
  • a hidden thread coming back after a generation change and staying visible after a rebuilt shell drops back to generation 0, and the entry expiring when its environment is removed

tsc --noEmit for the mobile app, vp lint, and vp fmt --check are clean.

Not yet checked: on-device screenshots of the new dialogs. Reproducing a server-missing thread in the simulator needs a stale cached shell. I'll add before/after captures in a follow-up update to this PR.

Walkthrough

The mobile app classifies thread-action failures and presents dialogs with actions based on the failure type. It tracks forgotten threads and filters them from environment snapshots until the shell generation changes or the environment leaves the catalog.

Changes: Thread action failures and forgotten threads

Layer / File(s)Summary
Classify thread-action failures
apps/mobile/src/features/home/threadActionFailure.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/home/threadActionFailure.test.ts
Adds classification for missing, archived, and other failures. Message extraction prefers a nonblank detail over message.
Track and filter forgotten threads
apps/mobile/src/state/forgotten-threads.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/threads.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/forgotten-threads.test.ts
Tracks forgotten thread IDs by environment and filters them from snapshots. Entries expire when the shell generation changes or a ready catalog no longer contains the environment.
Show contextual action failure dialogs
apps/mobile/src/features/home/useThreadListActions.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/home/useThreadListActions.test.ts
Offers actions based on failure type, including removing missing threads, unarchiving archived threads, and retrying eligible actions. Settle retries repeat settle bookkeeping; undo and compound move steps disable partial retries.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: settling a thread that the server no longer has now explains the failure and offers a Remove from list action. It fits the changeset, which adds a classifier and tailored dialogs for missing, archived, and other thread action failures, plus a device-local hide. It is specific and concise, uses the conventional commit form, and contains no file lists or vague terms.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. It states the failure, the reproduction steps, the new dialog branches and buttons, the device-local hide and its expiry rules, and the mobile-only scope. It gives focused test counts and lint/type/format results. It also says the on-device screenshots are not yet done. The Scope and approval section relies on an argument that the fix is obviously small, but it names no linked issue or maintainer approval. The objectives also show a maintainer review requesting before-and-after captures and a recording. The template requires those for UI changes, and the author has not provided them. The description cannot be fully complete until the screenshots or recording are added and the approval gap is addressed, so the check fails on those points.

Resolution

  1. Add before and after screenshots of the changed dialogs (missing, archived, and other failures) in the Verification section, as the template requires for UI changes. 2) Add a short recording of Remove from list, including the row returning after a fresh authoritative snapshot, if the reviewer's request for demonstration of retry, unarchive, and Remove from list still stands. 3) Link the triaged bug issue or a maintainer discussion approving the direction and scope, or explain the exemption more concretely with the reason it qualifies as a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug. The author's justification in Scope and approval does not reference any approval. 4) Note the Claude model and harness used, as the template asks, if that is applicable. The author already names the model and harness.

Show only OK when a missing thread makes Undo fail.

If Undo’s unsettle fails after the thread is deleted, executeAction passes run: null. This branch still offers Keep and Remove from list. The PR requires failed Undo steps to offer only OK. Handle run === null before showing the missing-thread actions. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

This PR does not meet the verification requirement.

The PR adds missing-thread dialogs, retry/unarchive buttons and device-local Remove from list, but its verification section explicitly says before/after on-device dialog captures have not been supplied.

Provide clear before/after captures of the affected mobile dialogs and a short recording demonstrating retry, unarchive and Remove from list, including the row returning after a fresh authoritative snapshot, then request reconsideration.

Fold the repeated Undo-failure case into the existing test.

The existing “stops restoring after a failed inverse command” test already runs the "Server rejected action" scenario. Add the OK-only assertion there, and keep this new test for the deleted-thread scenario. This keeps one test per distinct behavior. As per path instructions, “Extend an existing test or table when it fits.” As per coding guidelines, “Extend before you add.”

Do not retry a move's unsettle step by itself.

If moveThread fails while unsetting a thread during a cross-section move, “Try again” calls only executeAction("unsettle", thread). The move has already stopped. A successful retry therefore skips any remaining unsnooze and order-key writes, so the thread does not reach the requested position. Disable the step-level retry for moves, or rerun the complete move with its original destination. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Replace polling with a completion signal.

These mobile unit tests use vi.waitFor to poll after a dialog action. Await a signal from the mocked mutation or Undo notice instead. This makes completion explicit and avoids timing-dependent assertions. As per coding guidelines and path instructions, “Never wait on sleeps or polling.” (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Verified in a real dev environment

No changed behavior could be verified in a running app on this Linux VM. This is an unverifiable result, not a runtime pass.

I inspected the description, full diff, commit authors, discussion, and inline reviews at head 977af4d58cc89022073b4b1504f48ce160f1e11b. The PR is open, and all changed runtime code is in the native mobile client. GitCafe reports 33 successful checks, zero failing and zero pending; that does not prove the mobile behavior.

The native device prerequisite failed:

Verification transcript

Not verified

Main's stale-thread failure and the PR's missing-thread dialog, Keep, Remove from list, generation-based row restoration, archived-thread recovery, retry with Undo, and failed compound-action handling remain unverified. Neither Android nor iOS could be exercised because device access is disabled. A browser running the web client would not execute these mobile modules.

The repository's mobile verification skill requires stopping verification when device access is unavailable. Consequently I did not start dev servers, create app data, run provider turns, install dependencies, or claim before/after screenshots or video. No source changes were made.

To finish verification, enable a native Android device host, reproduce a stale cached thread on main, then repeat on this exact head with a real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turn and check the neighboring recovery actions above.
