AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx kept breaking main and PR CI. On a loaded CI runner, a cold preview worker or the font preview can take longer than vi.waitFor's 1 second default. #26314 fixed the large-text test. Two more tests still had the same problem:

  • Font preview. #26314 pre-imported the lazy chunks, but FontFace.load() and the 600 KB data-URL encode still ran inside the 1s wait.
  • Streamed attachment retry. It waits for a cold large-text worker to find binary data. This flaked on CI (feat/model-fallback, Oct 27).

A third test, copy every indexed line, has the same exposure but had not failed yet.

These 3 waits now use the 10s waitFor ceiling that the file already uses 8 times for worker and WASM loads. The font chunk pre-import is gone, because the ceiling also covers it.

Proof: a 1.5s delay injected into largeText.worker.ts and FontViewer reproduces the exact CI errors on main, and the fix passes. A temporary setup that delays each worker's first message by 1.5s fails 2 tests on main and passes all 107 web browser test files (464 tests) with the fix.

Flake hunt notes: every other main CI flake since Oct 25 (runHook, replay recovery, composer debounce) already has a fix on main. The other repeat PR failures were real branch breaks.

Walkthrough

Attachment preview browser tests now allow up to 10 seconds for several asynchronous results. The font-preview test no longer explicitly imports the lazy preview modules before checking the iframe.

This only changes browser tests, so production behavior is unaffected. The retry test can still be timing-sensitive on slow CI runs, so the owner should be aware of it. The change can merge, with a follow-up to synchronize on worker readiness.

Synchronize the retry worker instead of extending this wait.

The affected call is the post-retry vi.waitFor on line 2165, not the refresh assertion on line 2166. It uses Vitest’s 1-second default. A 1.5-second delay before the replacement worker responds can make the recovered text assertion fail.

The testing guidance does not literally prohibit a timeout option passed to vi.waitFor; its per-test timeout rule applies to test-level timeout arguments. However, it also states that tests needing longer timeouts are wrong and that flaky tests must be fixed rather than given longer timeouts. Synchronize this assertion with worker readiness or fix worker startup instead of extending it to 10 seconds.

Not changing this. The post-retry wait does not depend on worker startup. I ran the whole web browser project with each Worker's first postMessage delayed by 1.5s, and all 464 tests passed with this PR, including this one. The large-text viewer paints the prefetched first screen (recovered text) before the replacement worker answers. This wait has also never failed on CI.

On timeout vs. synchronization: the repo rule bans per-test timeouts and retries, not vi.waitFor ceilings. This file already uses a 10s ceiling 8 times for worker and WASM loads, and the failing waits here are condition waits on real worker output, not sleeps.
