Problem

In WSL-only mode on Windows, a WSL backend that crashes on every start traps the user. Before #25903 the "Connecting to WSL…" splash spun forever. On main, a "T3 Code could not start" window appears after three failures, but it only offers Open releases, Copy details and Quit, so there is still no way to turn WSL-only off without killing the app and editing desktop-settings.json by hand. The reporter's distro lacked libatomic.so.1, so the server exited with code 1 every time.

Reproduced on Linux with the real desktop app: desktop-settings.json set to {"wslBackendEnabled":true,"wslOnly":true}, and a backend that exits with code 1 on every start. The before/after table is under Verification.

Change

  • Crash loop falls back to Windows. When the primary backend runs on WSL and the backend manager reports its crash-loop failure (three consecutive exits before ready), the desktop does what it already does when WSL preflight retries run out. It shows "WSL backend is still unavailable" and applies the in-memory Windows fallback. The restart the manager has already scheduled then resolves the Windows primary. The dialog and fallback are now one shared helper (useWindowsForThisLaunch) used by both paths.
  • Live but not-ready WSL is left alone. A WSL process that is alive but past its 60 s readiness window keeps today's behaviour (the recovery window, which closes itself when the backend becomes ready), because slow cold boots are expected (#5526). Crash and timeout are told apart by whether the instance still has an active process.
  • Other primaries are unchanged. Non-WSL primaries, including WSL-only settings on a machine where WSL is unavailable, still report Failing and show the recovery window.
  • The fallback no longer leaks to disk. DesktopAppSettings now keeps the persisted document separate from session-only overrides. Before this, any later save, such as a window move, wrote the in-memory fallback to disk and turned WSL-only off for good. That also affected the existing preflight fallback. Explicit user changes still apply to both.

Fixes pingdotgg/t3code#14393

Verification

Focused tests: vp test run on DesktopBackendPool.test.ts, DesktopAppSettings.test.ts, DesktopBackendManager.test.ts, DesktopStartupRecovery.test.ts and DesktopBackendConfiguration.test.ts: 5 files, 48 tests passed. vp run check:changed passed.

New tests, each failing without the fix:

  • DesktopBackendPool > falls back to Windows for this launch when the WSL primary keeps crashing. It fails on main with expected [] to deeply equal ['WSL backend is still unavailable']. It asserts exactly one dialog, wslOnly off in memory, and the spawn order wsl.exe ×3, /electron.
  • DesktopBackendPool > keeps a live WSL primary probing after a readiness timeout. It asserts no dialog, no fallback, Failing, and no Windows spawn.
  • DesktopBackendPool > keeps reporting Failing when WSL-only already fell back to Windows.
  • DesktopAppSettings > keeps the in-memory WSL fallback out of later persisted writes. It fails on main because the reloaded wslBackendEnabled is false.

Real desktop app on Linux (Electron 44.9.3 under Xvfb at 1920×1080, isolated HOME and T3CODE_HOME, WSL-only settings, a backend that exits with code 1 on every start). On Linux WSL is never available, so the primary resolves to the local backend. These captures cover the bug and confirm the non-WSL path is unchanged; they cannot reach the new WSL fallback.

What else changed: the main-vs-after diff shows only the log timestamp and the run-directory path. The settings change also stops the existing exhausted-preflight fallback from being saved to disk on a later write.

Not checked:

  • cannot-verify windows. The new path (the dialog, then the Windows-backed main window, after a real WSL crash loop) runs only on Windows with a WSL distro. No VM here can run it, so its proof is the unit tests above.
  • After the fallback, the manager's restart counter is not reset. If the Windows backend then crashes as well, the recovery window shows after its first crash rather than its third.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at eb80365

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused desktop crash-loop bug fix: only repeatedly crashing WSL-only backends switch to Windows for the current launch, while slow or non-WSL paths remain unchanged. Session-only settings handling prevents that fallback from permanently changing the user’s saved WSL preference, and the affected behavior is covered by focused tests.

Walkthrough

The change separates session settings from persisted settings and adds an in-memory Windows fallback for selected WSL startup failures. Tests cover repeated WSL crashes, Windows primary resolution, missed readiness, and persistence of WSL settings.

Changes: WSL startup fallback and session settings

Layer / File(s)Summary
Separate session and persisted settings
apps/desktop/src/settings/DesktopAppSettings.ts, apps/desktop/src/settings/DesktopAppSettings.test.ts
Settings now track session and persisted values separately. In-memory updates affect session settings, while persistent updates also update persisted settings. A regression test verifies that a later bounds update does not write the in-memory WSL fallback to disk.
Handle WSL startup failures
apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopBackendPool.ts, apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopBackendPool.test.ts
Nonfatal preflight failures use the shared in-memory fallback helper. Primary startup failures use the fallback when the primary is configured for WSL, has no active PID, and wslOnly is enabled. Tests cover fallback after repeated WSL crashes, Windows primary resolution, and a WSL process that misses readiness.

The description includes all required sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. It explains the affected behavior, implementation, focused test results, manual verification limits, and known remaining behavior. It also identifies the agent and harness used.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed production code maps to the crash-loop objective of #14393 or supports it. DesktopBackendPool.ts changes: useWindowsForThisLaunch is extracted from the preflight fallback so both paths share one dialog and in-memory fallback. handlePrimaryStartupFailure is added for the crash-loop path. Non-WSL primaries and non-wslOnly settings still use the existing Failing state. DesktopAppSettings.ts changes: the persisted and session split is needed so the in-memory fallback does not reach disk. The issue asks for the fallback to apply 'for that launch'. The same split also fixes the existing preflight fallback. That effect is a direct consequence of the same mechanism, not an unrelated change. The DesktopBackendPool test harness changes and the DesktopAppSettings test are supporting tests for these behaviors. The PR changes no other production files in the reviewed diff. The reviewed evidence does not show unrelated changes. The Windows-backed restart path remains unverified on Windows, but that uncertainty does not indicate an out-of-scope change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #14393 is open, so its coding requirements apply. The PR implements the crash-loop objective and the persistence objective. It does not implement the unreachable-backend objective.

Objective A, crash loop [#14393]: In WSL-only mode, a WSL primary that fails before readiness must show an error and use the Windows fallback for this launch. Implemented. DesktopBackendPool.ts adds handlePrimaryStartupFailure. It applies the fallback only when the primary runs on WSL (runningDistro set), the active PID is none, and wslOnly is true. It then calls useWindowsForThisLaunch, which shows 'WSL backend is still unavailable' and applies applyWslWindowsFallbackInMemory. DesktopBackendManager.ts documents onStartupFailure as firing after repeated crashes, and STARTUP_FAILURE_RESTART_ATTEMPTS is 3. The restart that resolves to Windows is inferred from the existing restart design and the test spawn order. It was not run on Windows.

Objective B, fallback stays for this launch [#14393]: Implemented. DesktopAppSettings.ts keeps separate persisted and session values. Later persisted writes use only the persisted value, so the in-memory fallback no longer reaches disk.

Objective C, unreachable WSL backend [#14393]: Not implemented. The issue names an unreachable backend (for example, a dropped port) as a reproduction of the same trap. It expects an error and Windows fallback when 'the WSL backend can't come up'. The PR leaves a live WSL process that misses its 60 s readiness window in the Failing state, which shows the recovery window. The PR description states that this window offers no way to turn WSL-only off. The user therefore stays trapped in this case. The PR cites slow cold boots as the reason, but the issue text still covers this case.

Resolution

Choose one of these remediations. (1) Apply the same WSL-only Windows fallback to a WSL primary that is alive but fails readiness after its readiness window. Add a DesktopBackendPool test for that case. (2) Obtain maintainer agreement to narrow #14393 to the crash-loop case. In that case, change the PR so it no longer claims to fix the unreachable-backend variant.

Await restart milestones before asserting state.

firstExit is completed by persistFailure before finalizeRun calls scheduleRestart. The test can therefore resume before the first restart fiber exists. One TestClock.adjust(Duration.minutes(1)) is valid for advancing registered Effect.sleep calls, but it does not synchronize the later forked restart chain.

The positive test can assert before the third WSL crash and the /electron spawn. The negative test can assert before the third restart reports Failing.

Await each expected spawn as a concrete milestone, advancing the clock between milestones. In the negative test, await the Failing startup-state change before checking errors and settings.
