fix(server): preview_open reports a tab it shows as visible#26055
Problem
preview_open with open: true / show: true asks the client to show the tab and then returns at once, before the client's Browser panel has attached its stream. So it reports visible: false for a tab that is about to be on screen, and the agent tells the user the browser is hidden. Reproduced on main (36d4d711b7) with the web client: an agent's preview_open({"url":"https://example.org","open":true,"reuseExistingTab":false}) returned visible: false, and the preview_status call right after it returned visible: true with the panel on screen. visible also had no description saying what it measures.
Change
- After an explicit
open: true/show: truereveal,preview_openwaits up to 1 s for a client viewer to attach before it builds its status. It stops as soon as one attaches, never runs past the request's deadline, and overlaps the page-load wait. Tabs that already have a viewer and desktop-rendered tabs (which never attach a viewer) do not wait. A tab no client shows still returnsvisible: falseafter the bound. visible(top level and intabs[]) gets a schema description: true while any client streams this tab's live view; the desktop app's own webview does not count.

Verification
- New test in
apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts, "preview_open reports a tab it shows as visible once the client attaches": a simulated client attaches its viewer asynchronously after it sees the reveal event. Against main'sServerBrowser.tsit fails 5 of 5 (expected false to be true); on this branch it passes.ServerBrowser.test.ts30/30. vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck (32 packages) and tests pass.- Real app: web dev server per side on a fresh database, the dev server's own agent calling the preview tools; T3 preview Chromium 156 on Linux, 1280×800 fill, light theme, no device emulation, DPR 2. R1 is the fix; R2 shows the cost (an explicit open no client shows returns about 1 s later, still
false; interval from shell timestamps around the call, approximate: 152 ms before, 1169 ms after); R3 (openunset) and R4 (open: false) do not wait.
Evidence
Captured at 0b70531b31; the PR head adds only a merge of main, which does not touch the changed files. Each side ran its own agent on a fresh database, so thread titles, tab ids, timestamps and sidebar contents differ between Before and After, and the diff images light up on those. Read the visible values in the tool results: they are the evidence. On main the immediate preview_status in R1 and R3 also read false (the client attached even later than in the first reproduction). R2 After repeats the prompt in the same thread after a first attempt that included tool discovery; the earlier tab appears in its tabs list.
Exact prompts and retry notes. Environment for every cell: web, 1280×800 fill viewport, light theme; Chromium 156 / Linux, no emulation, DPR 2, scale 1, root font 16 px. Diff0 uses 0% fuzz; DiffT uses 5% fuzz. Both amplify detected changes to saturated red on white.

Not checked: desktop-rendered tabs (the change skips them), the remaining-deadline clamp (no prompt-level control of the request budget), closing the tab before a viewer attaches, mobile and remote/tunnel attach timing.

Approvability
Verdict: Approved at f731eb4
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused server bug fix that waits for an explicitly revealed preview viewer to attach before reporting visibility, with a bounded timeout and a regression test. The contract changes only clarify the existing visibility field semantics.

Walkthrough
When an explicit reveal request targets a non-desktop tab with no viewers,
ServerBrowserwaits briefly for a viewer to attach, subject to the request deadline. The preview status descriptions clarify that visibility reflects a client streaming the live view.Changes: Preview visibility
Layer / File(s) Summary Reveal and viewer attachment wait
packages/contracts/src/previewAutomation.ts,apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts,apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.tsThe status descriptions define visibility as a client streaming the live view, excluding the desktop app’s own webview. For eligible explicit reveal requests, ServerBrowserwaits up to 1,000 ms, bounded by the remaining request deadline, for a viewer to attach. Explanation
Directly linked issue
#17015has two coding requirements. (1) After an explicit open/show request, return visibility that matches the user-facing preview state. (2) Document what visible measures and whose view it describes.Requirement (1): ServerBrowser.ts adds awaitViewer. When reveal === true, tab.viewers.size === 0, and tab.desktop === null, preview_open waits up to min(1000 ms, remaining deadline) for a viewer. The wait starts before the page-load wait, so the two overlap. The wait ends when the viewer attaches, which resolves tab.viewerAttached in the viewer acquire path. A tab no client shows still returns visible: false after the bound. The new test in ServerBrowser.test.ts, per the PR, fails on main and passes on this head.
Requirement (2): packages/contracts/src/previewAutomation.ts adds the same schema description to top-level visible and to tabs[].visible. The description states that visible is true while any client streams the tab's live view and that the desktop app's own webview does not count.
Limits: the 1 s bound is a timing heuristic. A client that attaches after 1 s still yields visible: false, as the PR states. I could not confirm from the diff that deadlineMs uses the same clock as performance.now(). If it does not, the deadline clamp would not hold. The issue does not state a deadline requirement, so this does not change the verdict on
#17015.

Explanation
The whole-PR diff against the merge base contains three code changes. All three connect to
#17015.- apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts: the viewer-wait constant, awaitViewer, the viewerAttached field on ServerTab, the reveal-path wait in preview_open, and the resolve call in the viewer acquire path. These implement the explicit-reveal wait.
- packages/contracts/src/previewAutomation.ts: schema descriptions for visible. These implement the documentation requirement.
- apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts: the regression test for the attach-after-reveal case (per the PR summary).
I found no unrelated changes in the diffed files. The file list at the head was too large to review fully, so this verdict covers the diffed files and the PR summary only.

Check whether the tab still exists after the viewer wait.
If a client closes the tab during this wait, dropTab removes it from tabs. The following statusWithTitle(tab) call still reports available: true for the closed tab. Check that tabs still contains this tab before returning its status. Return an unavailable status or a closed-tab error otherwise. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
