test: skip symlink fixtures where the host cannot create symlinks#25970
Problem
On a Windows host without Developer Mode, seven tests fail while planting a symlink fixture, before they reach an assertion, with EPERM: operation not permitted, symlink …. The repo already has the symlinksSupported probe (@t3tools/shared/testing/symlinks) and uses skipIf(!symlinksSupported) in about 20 test files. These seven don't use it. Reproduced on Linux at e9236274a3 by making every symlink call fail with EPERM through a Node preload, which is what Windows without Developer Mode does:
| Suite (preload active, main) | Result |
|---|---|
apps/server serverSettings.test.ts + AgentSessionScanner.test.ts | 3 failed, 95 passed, 2 skipped |
packages/provider-opencode usage.test.ts | 2 failed, 3 passed |
packages/provider-acp clientPolicy.test.ts | 2 failed, 11 passed |
Every failure is the symlink EPERM thrown during setup.
Change
The seven tests switch from it.effect(...) to it.effect.skipIf(!symlinksSupported)(...), the existing pattern (as in maintenanceResolver.test.ts). Three files gain the import; AgentSessionScanner.test.ts already had it. Test bodies are unchanged. Most of the diff is the formatter re-indenting the wrapped calls (git diff -w shows +24/−8). Product code is untouched, and hosts that can create symlinks still run every test.
Guarded tests:
serverSettings.test.ts: saves through a symlinked settings file without replacing the linkAgentSessionScanner.test.ts: returns the imported project ID through a realpath alias; excludes sandboxes reached through a symlink into the worktrees dirprovider-opencode/usage.test.ts: never follows symlinks in the legacy OpenCode store; scans canonical instance roots once, including XDG and home defaultsprovider-acp/clientPolicy.test.ts: denies mutations through workspace symlinks that escape the writable roots; allows existing and new files beneath canonical writable roots
Four other tests named in the issue no longer exist on main: three symlinked-settings reload tests and "matches a persisted project alias to a transcript realpath". The opencode "scans canonical instance roots once" test isn't named in the issue, but it plants a symlink and fails the same way.

Triaged via the automated issue flow. Julius confirmed the failures in the issue thread, and this is the maintainer pickup that thread describes.
Verification
Focused tests at bfd52848f9, each from the owning package:
| Run | apps/server (2 files) | provider-opencode | provider-acp |
|---|---|---|---|
| main + EPERM preload | 3 failed, 95 passed, 2 skipped | 2 failed, 3 passed | 2 failed, 11 passed |
| this branch + EPERM preload | 95 passed, 5 skipped | 3 passed, 2 skipped | 11 passed, 2 skipped |
| this branch, normal | 100 passed | 5 passed | 13 passed |
Under the preload, apps/server reports 5 skips: the 3 tests guarded here plus the 2 existing guarded "symlink alias" cases.
vp run check:changed passed format, lint, graphql, knip 2/2, typecheck (14 packages) and tests (4 files, 118 passed). knip 1/2 could not load apps/mobile/metro.config.js (a DNS failure fetching from raw.githubusercontent.com in the sandbox), so it flagged unrelated mobile files. This diff touches no mobile files.
Preload and raw transcripts (uploaded, not committed): no-symlink-preload.cjs · before-server.log · before-packages.log · after-eperm.log · after-normal.log
No visible surface, so there are no captures.
cannot-verify windows: not run on a real Windows host without Developer Mode. The EPERM preload stands in for it, and the symlinksSupported probe it trips is the same symlinkSync call that fails there.

No code changes; evidence and verification added below.
Evidence
Test-only change with no rendered surface, so each capture is a complete, unedited Vitest transcript (verbose reporter). Before = parent e9236274a3, after = head bfd52848f9. "EPERM" rows run with no-symlink-preload.cjs (sha256 e3648645…cecdde) in NODE_OPTIONS, which makes every symlink call throw EPERM the way Windows without Developer Mode does. Diff0 is the exact per-test outcome comparison in each sheet; DiffT (pixel threshold) does not apply.

Every parent EPERM failure is EPERM: operation not permitted, symlink … thrown while planting the fixture; the sheets quote each stack. Test IDs S1–A2 are the seven tests listed under Change above.
Environment: Linux x86_64 (fs-35, kernel 6.1.102), Node v24.22.1 (apps/server) and v26.12.1 (packages) as selected by vp, Vite+ 1.4.0, Vitest 5.0.5 default forks pool (workers inherit NODE_OPTIONS). Each transcript header prints its SHA, cwd, command, NODE_OPTIONS, preload hash and exit code.
What else changed: nothing. All 118 test names were compared between parent and head in both modes. Only the seven guarded tests change status (F → S, EPERM only); the two existing guarded scanner alias controls skip under EPERM on both SHAs; every head run exits 0.

Approvability
Verdict: Approved at bfd5284
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The four changed files are test-only files excluded by the repository’s review configuration. The change only skips symlink fixtures on hosts that cannot create symlinks and does not affect product runtime behavior.

Walkthrough
Symlink-dependent tests across the server, ACP, and OpenCode test suites now skip when symlinks are unsupported. Their existing setups and assertions are unchanged.

The symlink tests now skip on unsupported hosts, but their skips need the required issue comments. This is a bounded correction before merge.

Explanation
The title "test: skip symlink fixtures where the host cannot create symlinks" uses a conventional commit prefix and names the main change. The PR wraps seven symlink-fixture tests in skipIf(!symlinksSupported) so they skip on hosts that cannot create symlinks, which matches the title.

Explanation
Issue [
#19681] requires symlink-fixture tests to use the existingsymlinksSupportedprobe and skip when symlink creation is unavailable. The diff addsit.effect.skipIf(!symlinksSupported)to the server settings test, twoAgentSessionScannertests, two provider-ACP tests, and the two provider-OpenCode tests identified in the change summary. The test bodies and product code remain unchanged.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue [
#19681]. They add the required probe imports, wrap the affected tests withskipIf, and reformat the wrapped test bodies. No product code or unrelated files are changed. The additional provider-OpenCode test is in scope because it creates a symlink and has the same setup failure.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The pull request description follows the required structure. It explains the Windows symlink failure, the scoped test-only change, linked issue and maintainer context, detailed verification results, limitations, and agent attribution. The description also identifies the unrelated knip limitation and the lack of native Windows verification.
