Problem

On macOS the launch agent's PATH includes the running runtime's directory, ~/.t3/runtime/versions/<v>. The startup prune's shellLauncherTargets looks for t3 in every PATH directory, so it finds that runtime's own entry binary versions/<v>/t3. It then appends the entry to the append-only runtime/launchers, and every later prune treats <v> as referenced. Every version that reaches the service PATH is kept for good, about 270 MB each.

Reproduced on Linux with the real prunePinnedRuntimes (real filesystem and /proc scan) against a synthetic T3 home. Two service startups, on 0.1.0 and then 0.1.2, each with their own version directory on PATH. On main, runtime/launchers gains versions/0.1.0/t3 and versions/0.1.2/t3, and 0.1.0 survives the prune after the update.

Change

shellLauncherTargets now skips a candidate written as versions/<v>/t3 that is not itself a link. That is a runtime's own entry binary, which the macOS service's PATH exposes. A launcher still pins the runtime it reaches: a link from elsewhere (~/.local/bin/t3, or a custom bin directory even under versions/), or a PATH directory that is itself linked to a version directory. The same check applies to entries already in runtime/launchers, so installs pinned by an earlier prune are released on the next prune without rewriting the file.

That accidental record was also what kept a stopped macOS service's launcher runtime. The plist starts versions/<launcher>/t3, and in-place updates only move the active version. So the start-up prune (pruneRuntimesOnStart) now reads the installed unit or plist and passes its program, as written and resolved (for a symlinked T3 home), as a reference, as t3 update already does. bootServiceUnitPath exposes the unit location the service managers already use.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 99da2d3

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused server-side bug fix that corrects runtime pruning while preserving genuine launcher and boot-service references. The changed production paths are small and accompanied by regression tests, including the PATH-directory symlink case.

Walkthrough

The PR adds shared boot-service unit path lookup and includes service program paths in runtime-pruning references. It also changes how pruning handles launcher targets that resolve to runtime entry files inside versions directories.

Explanation

Issue #25398 requires the prune to retain a runtime when a real t3 launcher points to it. In shellLauncherTargets, the updated inVersionsDir(target) check also matches a launcher reached through a symlinked PATH directory. The code resolves the launcher's parent, appends t3, and skips the target when that path equals the resolved runtime entry. Thus a PATH directory linked to versions/<v> is treated as the runtime's own entry, although the PR description says this launcher must pin the runtime. The startup service-program reference addresses stopped services, but it does not correct this launcher classification.

Resolution

Change the own-entry check to distinguish a direct runtime entry from a path reached through a symlinked directory. Keep the latter as a launcher reference. Add or correct a regression test that uses a symlinked PATH directory and verifies that its runtime remains pinned.
