Problem

The mobile appearance provider pushed theme preferences into the native runtime (Appearance.setColorScheme, Uniwind text-scale variables) from a useLayoutEffect. It also kept the Material You palettes in component state, fed by an AppState listener effect. Two refs tracked "what was applied" and "what was picked" alongside renders.

Change

  • A derived atom (base font size, theme mode, appearance) drives the native runtime through one app-lifetime subscription, installAppearanceRuntime(). It is installed with the other app services in App.tsx's appServiceDisposers, so a hot reload disposes it before installing it again.
  • The Material You palettes are an atom that owns its AppState change/focus listeners and only publishes when the palettes really change. installAppearanceRuntime() holds it mounted, so a hot reload releases the old listeners too.
  • The theme pickers read the current selection from the registry when they are called. That value already includes the previous pick's optimistic write, so the selectedThemeIdsRef copy is gone.
  • setThemeMode applies the runtime before it writes the preference, so the subscription sees nothing new and does not apply a second time.

What this improves

  • Sync removed: the runtime no longer follows preferences through a layout effect after the provider commits. It is applied when the preference atom changes, including on the first hydrate.
  • Simpler provider: two effects, the selectedThemeIdsRef ref and the syncThemeRuntime wrapper are gone. The applied runtime state moves from a ref to module scope, because native appearance and the Uniwind variables are process-global.
  • No bug fix is claimed.

Behavior changes

  • The palette listeners now live for the whole app instead of for the provider. The provider is mounted for the whole app anyway, so nothing visible changes.
  • The splash screen still hides from the existing SplashScreenCoordinator effect, unchanged. We kept it because it reacts to the provider's ready state after commit, and an effect is the honest model for that.
  • No logging changes. Every refresh that fired before still fires.

Effects

  • apps/mobile/src/features/settings/appearance/AppearancePreferencesProvider.tsx: 2 -> 0
  • apps/mobile/src/App.tsx: 1 -> 1

Verification

  • vp run check:changed passes after rebasing on main: format, lint, knip 1/2 and 2/2, typecheck (7 packages), test (16 files).
  • Not verified on a simulator. Still to check by hand: a cold launch with the correct theme and no splash flash, switching light/dark/system in Settings, changing the OS appearance while the app runs, and a hot reload that does not install twice.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This refactor moves theme synchronization into an app-lifetime service and changes when native appearance and global text variables are applied. The added atom/lifecycle coordination has broader startup and preference-update implications than a mechanical refactor.

Walkthrough

The mobile appearance provider now uses shared atoms for palette and runtime state. The app registers an installer for runtime synchronization and cleanup. Theme selection reads current stored preferences, and theme-mode and font-size setters update runtime state and preferences.

Changes: Mobile appearance runtime

Layer / File(s)Summary
Appearance runtime and palette synchronization
apps/mobile/src/features/settings/appearance/AppearancePreferencesProvider.tsx, apps/mobile/src/App.tsx
Shared atoms provide palette and runtime state. The app registers an installer that subscribes to runtime state and applies native appearance and Uniwind updates. The palette atom refreshes on app activation or focus when system colors are available.
Preference updates from current state
apps/mobile/src/features/settings/appearance/AppearancePreferencesProvider.tsx
Theme selection reads current stored preferences. Theme-mode and font-size changes update shared runtime state and save preferences.

Appearance synchronization has no established blocking defect. The possible extra context re-renders remain worth checking, but their occurrence has not been confirmed.

Explanation

The title is specific and accurate. It names the change (theme preferences reach the native runtime without a layout effect) and matches the objectives: the provider's useLayoutEffect sync is replaced by an app-lifetime subscription driven by preference atoms. It uses a conventional commit prefix and is one sentence. It omits the palette and ref cleanup, which is acceptable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections. Problem, Change, and Verification are filled in with specific content. The Scope and approval section is missing. The template requires a linked triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion, or an explanation for a small focused fix. The description states 'No bug fix is claimed,' which makes the exemption path unclear. Verification is partial: it lists checks that passed and manual checks still pending, and it states the simulator was not used. The template also asks for the model and harness, which the author provided.

Resolution

Add a 'Scope and approval' section. Link the triaged issue or the maintainer-approved discussion, with the approval comment. If no prior issue exists, explain why this refactor qualifies under the small-change or established-capability exemption. The refactor touches the provider and App.tsx, and it changes lifecycle behavior, so it likely needs approval. Also add the before/after evidence the template asks for only if UI behavior is shown. Otherwise state that no UI screenshots apply, and keep the list of pending manual checks.

Memoize themeVariablesByAppearance to keep the context value stable.

This line calls resolveThemeVariablesByAppearance on every render, and the function returns a new object each time. getMobileThemeRuntimeVariables also spreads into a new object on Android and on iOS with the default light palette. As a result, themeVariablesByAppearance and themeVariables get new identities on every render.

Both values are dependencies of the useMemo that builds value, and themeVariables is passed to ScopedVariables. The useMemo therefore never returns a cached value. Every consumer of AppearancePreferencesContext re-renders whenever the provider renders. The change removed the previous memoization, so this is a regression.

Wrap the call in useMemo keyed on its two inputs. themeIds is already memoized, and systemColorPalettes only changes when the atom publishes a changed palette.
