Problem

Provider credentials can only live as plaintext in settings.json or as unencrypted secret files under the T3 home (see #14951). External secret providers let users point provider variables at a vault instead, but the whole feature is too large to review at once, so it needs a place to land in slices without exposing half-built UI to users.

Change

  • Adds a build-time T3CODE_FEATURE_SECRETS flag for the web client, off unless set to 1 or true. It is defined the same way as T3CODE_DESKTOP_UPDATE_REPOSITORY and lives in one exported constant, so removing it later is a one-file change.
  • Adds a secretProviders map to server settings, with a 1Password config (label and account) as the only kind. Patches merge per entry and null removes one, and editing it needs the same grant as provider settings.
  • With the flag on, Settings gets a "Secrets" entry under Connections. The page lists configured providers, with each account blurred until clicked like provider account emails, and can add, edit, and remove a 1Password provider. Environments without operate access see the list read-only.
  • With the flag off, the nav entry and search results are hidden and /settings/secrets redirects to General, so default builds are unchanged.

Nothing reads these providers yet. Wiring a provider variable to a secret comes next, then the other provider kinds.

Scope and approval

Direction from #14951. The split was agreed with Julius on Discord: this PR is the empty state, the form for one provider (1Password CLI), and the listing. Follow-ups: connecting provider inputs to secrets, then OpenBao, AWS Secrets Manager, and GCP Secret Manager, one PR each.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests beside changes).
  • Contract tests cover decoding and rejecting 1Password configs, serverSettings.test.ts covers per-entry upsert and removal, and the dialog logic tests cover name slugging, duplicate names, and account validation.
  • settingsSearch.test.ts covers that the Secrets search entries stay hidden when the flag is off.
  • Ran the web client against a local dev server with and without T3CODE_FEATURE_SECRETS=1. Without it, /settings/secrets lands on General and the sidebar has no Secrets entry. With it, added, listed, and removed a provider; the change persisted to settings.json.

Evidence

Web, 1440 wide, light theme, with T3CODE_FEATURE_SECRETS=1. With the flag off, Settings is pixel-identical to main. The machine name in the dialog copy is masked as "this server". Capture scripts: https://gist.github.com/yordis/82a67245ebaa2f1458bbf1ecb7c64519

Takeover

Taken over from @yordis; the behaviour and scope are theirs, and the commits above stay on the branch.

  • Contracts: the three new contract modules are folded into settings.ts next to usageLimitSources, the precedent this follows. Kind presentation (name, icon) is one record keyed by kind instead of a switch and a hardcoded "1Password" label.
  • Scope: the Secrets page is pinned to one environment like Providers (it edited a "representative" environment under All environments), is read-only under a project or checkout scope with the environment-wide notice, and its search results open under any scope.
  • Dialog: simplified (mounted only while open), name and account inputs capped at the schema limits, long labels wrap at 390px.
  • Dropped: the RedactedSensitiveText aria change. It changed every existing caller outside the flag, so it belongs in its own PR. Tests cut from 14 to 7, one per behaviour, each checked to fail without the change.

Evidence

Real web app, T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0 fresh databases, synthetic data. Before a9b513b50c (merge-base, main), after ee9754767f; R5 recaptured at 51da03790a after the layout fix. Later head commits only merge main. Headless Chromium 148 / Playwright 1.60, Linux, no emulation, DPR 1, zoom 100%, reduced motion, Date frozen; stills settle on two identical frames 500 ms apart. W = 1440×900, N = 390×844, L/D = light/dark. Full index with every still, viewport and timestamped recording.

Before and after: sidebar, search and Secrets page, 1440×900 light

Main has no Secrets page, so one before set (B0: sidebar, settings search "1password", /settings/secrets; stills, recording) is the before cell of every new-page row; diffs exist only where frames are comparable (R0, R1). Diff0 = any RGB delta, DiffT = max channel delta >16/255.

What else changed

  • Flag off: sidebar and settings search are pixel-identical to main at zero threshold (W-L, W-D, N-L); the original description's "pixel-identical to main" holds for those only. Direct /settings/secrets now redirects to General; on main it shows the app shell with empty routed content.
  • Flag on, outside the page: Secrets is inserted under Connections (Maintenance shifts down, Labs drops below the fold at 900px) and search shows two Secrets results; General content has zero changed pixels.
  • Navigating from General keeps the previous body on screen for a few frames after the URL changes (R1 recording, ~4.4 s). Measured per animation frame, existing pages do the same: Secrets 3, Source control 3, Providers 5–6 frames (script, log), so it is the router's existing transition, not new here.
  • R5 originally overflowed at 390px (pre-fix recording); the linked stills are the fixed layout. Everything else is the new page itself.

Scripts: reproduction steps · capture/seed driver · project seed · R5 recapture · fixture matrix.

Verification log
  • Tests: 14 → 7 (packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts 1, apps/server/src/auth/RpcAuthorization.test.ts +1 assertion, packages/shared/src/serverSettings.test.ts 1, SecretProviderDialog.logic.test.ts 2, settingsSearch.test.ts 1); each fails when the code it covers is reverted. vp run check:changed passes on the final head.
  • Review round 1 (2 reviewers): Secrets edited a representative environment under All environments → pinned to one environment; dialog limits and hint. Round 2: project scope allowed environment-wide edits → read-only with notice; search results blocked under project scope → scope null; the shared aria change reverted. Round 3: one reviewer MERGE, one open note (below).
  • Evidence: proof audit pass 1 derived a 25-row matrix, trimmed to the 13 rows the head affects; capture found the R5 overflow, fixed in 51da03790a and recaptured; audit pass 2 checked 69 stills, 20 diffs and 15 recordings: R2–R4 and R6–R12 sufficient; R0 wording, R1 transition and R5 final state were corrected and recaptured as above.
  • Open: a revealed account is announced as "Toggle account visibility" by screen readers. This is existing RedactedSensitiveText behaviour on main for all its callers, not new to this page.
  • Not covered by captures: no connected environment, connecting/disconnected, two environments, permission pending/error, mutation pending/failure, concurrent deletion (need a second environment or an RPC harness).
  • A flag-on client talking to an older server drops secretProviders writes silently; only flag-on builds reach it, and capability gating belongs before the flag is enabled.
  • Model and harness: Claude Opus 5.5 (lead, tests, implement, reviewer B) and GPT-6.1 Sol (reviewer A, proof audit, capture) in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR introduces a substantial, feature-gated workflow for persisting and managing 1Password secret-provider configurations, including new settings schema, authorization, routing, and UI. It also modifies a file under the auth directory, so the change warrants human review despite the feature being disabled by default.

Make the disabled-flag test use a controlled environment.

T3CODE_FEATURE_SECRETS=1 or true enables isSecretsFeatureEnabled, so searchSettings("secret providers") includes secret-providers. The unconditional assertion then fails. Keep the assertion unconditional, and run this test with the feature flag explicitly disabled. Do not make the assertion conditional, because this test is intended to cover the disabled branch.

Enter does not submit the form.

The <form> has no submit button. The "Add provider" button is outside the form and uses onClick. The form has two text inputs, so the browser does not run implicit submission. Pressing Enter in either field therefore does nothing, and the onSubmit handler is only reachable by script.

Link the footer button to the form. Then Enter and the click both go through onSubmit.

Fixed in cc07e1c5c7. The form now has an id and the primary button is type="submit" form="secret-provider-form", so Enter in either field submits. Verified in a dev build: pressing Enter in Account saved the provider and it appeared in the list.

@yordis Thanks for the fix and the dev-build check. The form association addresses the Enter-key submission issue.

Expose the account to assistive technology after reveal.

RedactedSensitiveText keeps this ariaLabel on the button after it reveals config.account. The label overrides the button text, so a screen reader still receives “Toggle account visibility” instead of the account. A user with read-only access cannot use Edit to read it. Update the helper to expose the account in its accessible name or description only after reveal. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
