Problem

Servers with 32,767 matching threads fail to load the shell snapshot with SQLite's too many SQL variables error. Every client loses thread-list sync; restarting the server can also fail during startup snapshot loading. A real dev server reproduced the failure at 32,767 active threads, while the 32,766-thread control started normally.

Change

Use the existing JSON ID-list encoder and json_each membership queries for shell thread, run, item-count, provider-thread, and pending-item reads. Each ID list now uses one bound parameter, including the active-run list, while preserving the existing filters and result assembly.

Scope and approval

GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/25621

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. This changes server query membership only; no client, contract, provider, setting, or persisted-state changes.

Verification

  • Regression written and run red first: 32,767-thread shell snapshots fail on main with too many SQL variables; the 32,766-thread control passes.
  • All 47 ProjectionStore tests pass after the fix, including unfiltered and active-location snapshots at 32,767 threads.
  • vp run check:changed: passed format, lint, knip, GraphQL, affected-package typechecks, and focused tests.
  • Independent gpt-6.1-sol and claude-opus-5-5 reviews found no blockers. Indexed thread lookups remain in the query plans.

Evidence index · Red test output · Reproduction seed · Empty visual matrix.

Server-only change: no render paths changed. Browser rendering of the entire large fixture and native clients were not asserted; runtime proof covers server startup and authenticated shell delivery. Current main was merged afterward. Both changed files match the reviewed evidence patch byte for byte; the remote branch’s alternate regression was replaced with the reviewed test, including active-location coverage.

Models: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1-Sol, through Claude Code and Codex harnesses in T3 Code.

Takeover

No code changes; evidence and verification added below. The earlier runtime proof was captured at d487d6cb5e against 0604547a3a. This round recaptured everything at the current head against its merge-base. On that base, a server with 32,767 threads now starts with a telemetry warning instead of failing. The shell snapshot still fails on HTTP and WebSocket, and this PR fixes that.

Evidence

Server-only change, so the captures are runtime transcripts, not screenshots. Both sides ran the same byte-identical drivers, each against a fresh database created by that side's own server. Fixture data is synthetic.

Verification log
  • Mode: evidence-only, round 2. No code changes, head unchanged at 20d22421d5.
  • Proof audit pass 1: 23-row matrix (20 mandatory, 1 optional, 2 N/A); no visual Before/After required. It added the H1, H2, and S1 boundaries, which the PR's own test does not reach.
  • Capture: 20 of 20 mandatory rows. The H2 boundary was corrected to 32,761/32,762 because the initial query binds five existing parameters.
  • Proof audit pass 2: SUFFICIENT. The auditor rebuilt the full service harness on both commits: no delta beyond metadata, and the parity dumps match the delivered ones exactly. No credentials or real data in the uploads.
  • Tests: regression red on base (1 failed); ProjectionStore.test.ts 47 passed on head.
  • CI: 39/39 checks green on 20d22421d5; no merge conflicts.
  • Unverified surfaces: none (server-only).

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 20d2242

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused server bug fix that changes only shell snapshot membership queries, replacing per-ID SQLite parameters with a single JSON-backed parameter to support large thread lists. A targeted regression test covers 32,767-thread unscoped and active snapshots, with no schema, default, deployment, or static-analysis changes.

Shell snapshot queries now use json_each to filter thread and active run IDs instead of per-ID SQL bindings. A regression test checks unscoped and active snapshots with 32,767 threads.

Large thread snapshots are covered, but the test does not protect the active-run path against the same variable-limit regression. This is a bounded follow-up rather than a demonstrated blocker.

Explanation

Issue #25621 requires shell snapshot reads to avoid SQLite's bound-variable limit for large thread sets. ProjectionStore.ts now uses json_each(${encodeIdList(...)}) for shell threads, runs, item counts, provider threads, pending items, and active run IDs. Existing filters and result queries remain in place. The regression test creates 32,767 threads and verifies both unscoped and active snapshots.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to ProjectionStore.ts query membership handling and its focused regression test. The test directly supports issue #25621. No unrelated client, contract, provider, setting, or persisted-state changes are shown.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description covers the required Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. It identifies the issue, explains the server-only fix, documents focused tests and runtime evidence, states limitations, and identifies the agent models and harnesses. The scope section links the triaged issue but does not include an explicit maintainer approval comment; this is minor because the description explains that the change is a focused fix for an obvious bug.

Exercise the active-run-ID branch in the regression test.

The fixture creates 32,767 threads but no runs. getShellSnapshot builds activeRunIds only from rows with a running active_run_id, so this test passes an empty list. The json_each(activeRunIds) branch is skipped, and the thread-count assertions cannot detect a regression to per-run-ID bindings. Add more than 32,766 running runs with matching pending items and assert those items in the active snapshot.

Checked the CodeRabbit coverage suggestion against the current source. The 32,767-thread regression deliberately reproduces the reported failure without active runs; it covers unfiltered and active-location snapshots. The active-run membership query also uses a single encoded JSON parameter, so no per-run binding overflow remains. A fixture with 32,767 simultaneously running runs would protect an additional hypothetical regression, rather than reproduce the reported failure. Keeping the focused regression and treating this nonblocking coverage suggestion as deferred.

I also opened #25691 for #25621 earlier, using the same JSON-backed json_each approach. It includes a regression test above SQLite’s parameter limit, and I manually verified thread creation and renaming sync across two browser tabs with a 34,948-thread fixture, mostly idle subagents.

Linking it here to coordinate the overlapping work and avoid duplicate review effort. Happy to defer to whichever PR is preferred.
