Cause. AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx had three problems:

  1. Word engine boot. Every test that rendered a .docx booted the real Word engine. Each document opens in a fresh worker that compiles and instantiates about 30 MB of WebAssembly. A probe in the worker put engine startup at 700 to 1,000 ms of the roughly 1.3 s an idle render takes. On CI these tests took 10 to 17 s each against the 15 s timeout:

    • in runs 40389828211 and 40393435814: the two omission renders and the seven "retains Word" renders;
    • in run 40411490161: the remount reload test timed out, and the 60/100-page reports took 11 to 12 s.
  2. Large text worker race. large text preview recovery checked the worker count right after the new text appeared. That text is painted on the main thread from a range prefetch, and the worker starts two animation frames later.

  3. Background fetches in the HTML test. keeps a renewed URL for subsequent rendered and source views counted every call to the stubbed global fetch. The app's connection runtime keeps polling /.well-known/t3/environment through that same fetch while the file runs. In run 40411490161 one of those polls landed inside the test, giving "called 2 times".

  4. One-second waits on conversion output. The notebook and rtf/epub/ods viewer checks used vi.waitFor's default one second. The output they wait for sits behind lazy chunks and a conversion worker. With two copies of main's version of the file pinned to one core, these tests failed the same way CI did on this PR (run 40415076276). So did the PDF journey and the Word renders. The failures are not caused by this PR.

  5. Long engine-heavy tests. The shared-string test's viewer half boots the spreadsheet engine: 10 to 11 s under contention. The PDF navigation journey took 12.7 s under contention and 10.5 s on CI.

Fix.

  • Retain cases: the seven "retains Word" cases check the prepared package from prepareOffice (not truncated, body and parts kept), as #25562 did for the omission cases.
  • Omission renders: the two "renders the body and warns when omitting expanded …" tests are removed.
  • Remaining Word renders: the file now mocks office/WordDocument with a stand-in that shows the prepared body text. The remount reload test and the 60/100-page report tests still go through fetch, the preparation worker and the viewer chain, but no test boots the engine.
  • Large text: the test waits for the worker count with vi.waitFor.
  • HTML preview recovery: the tests count only the attachment's own data:text/html requests.
  • Viewer waits: the notebook and rtf/epub/ods viewer checks give the worker-output milestone ten seconds, waiting on the output itself.
  • Shared-string test: keeps its worker bounding checks and drops the viewer half.
  • PDF test: "navigates, searches, zooms, and selects mixed-height PDF pages" is removed.

Coverage lost.

  • No end-to-end check that the engine accepts a body whose note, header or footer parts were removed. The prepared-document tests still check that dangling header and footer references are stripped.
  • No check that the "Preview limited" notice renders for a truncated document.
  • No check that the engine paginates a 60- or 100-page table report and that scrolling reaches the last page. These tests now check only that preparation keeps every page and does not truncate when there is binary media.
  • No check that rendered text includes the header, footer and table-style text. The prepared package still keeps those parts.
  • No check that the spreadsheet viewer shows the 4,096-character bounded cell with the "Preview limited" notice, or that its canvas stays aligned while scrolling.
  • No coverage of the PDF viewer's fit-width, page navigation, zoom, search across split text runs, or text-layer selection on a rotated page. No other test covers PdfViewer.

How I showed it.

  • Engine startup: measured with a temporary worker probe.
  • Contention: three overlapping runs pinned to one core with taskset -c 0, each started once the previous one was running.
    • Before, the 60-page report took 12.7 s and the remount test 7.9 s.
    • After, the slowest of the three runs was: 60-page 2.5 s, 100-page 3.1 s, remount 1.7 s, renewed-URL 0.45 s.
  • Two overlapping full-file runs, each pinned to one core:
    • main's version: 8 failures in one run, 2 in the other;
    • this branch: both runs pass all 129 tests, with the slowest test at 6.8 s.
  • Full file: passes locally in about 50 s, down from 106 s. vp run check:changed is green.

Left.

  • The Word engine itself is not exercised by any test in this file.
  • Every Word preview in the product recompiles the engine's WebAssembly in a fresh worker (about 1 s on a fast machine). @betteroffice/docx exposes no public way to share a compiled module across workers.
  • The connection runtime's discovery poll runs during unrelated browser tests.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at ce55d05

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This PR is confined to an ignored browser-test file and targets CI flake reduction without changing customer-facing runtime behavior. The additional customer escalation conditions for product defaults and static-analysis suppressions are not implicated.

Walkthrough

The browser tests now inspect prepared Word output, adjust waits for preview workers and conversions, and isolate attachment fetch assertions from unrelated fetch activity.

Changes: Attachment preview browser tests

Layer / File(s)Summary
Word preparation and report checks
apps/web/src/components/files/AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx
A Word document mock reads prepared document text. Tests check prepareOffice output for retained content and parts. The table-heavy report test checks final-page text directly.
Preview timing and coverage assertions
apps/web/src/components/files/AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx
Large-text recovery checks wait for worker counts. Notebook, RTF, EPUB, and ODS preview waits have longer timeouts. Rendered XLSX and PDF checks are removed.
HTML attachment fetch assertions
apps/web/src/components/files/AttachmentFilePreview.browser.test.tsx
Renewed-URL and reauthorization checks count only HTML attachment fetches.

Add focused coverage for the real Word engine.

The file-level WordDocument mock replaces engine layout and painting with prepared XML text. The 60/100-page test therefore cannot detect regressions in pagination, canvas rendering, or scrolling to the final page. The direct officePreview.worker.ts tests only exercise prepareOffice.

Add a separate browser test without this mock. Keep one focused case that renders a multi-page document through document.worker.ts, verifies painted output, and scrolls to the final page. Retain a focused truncated-document case that verifies the limit notice and rendered output.

2347-2347: External image Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Heavy lift

Add a focused PdfViewer test to replace the removed PDF journey.

The PR removes the test that rendered <PdfViewer src={url} title="Planning PDF" />. That test covered page navigation, zoom, fit-width, find-in-PDF highlighting, and native text selection. The surviving PDF test in this file (validates PDF %s assets before decoding) only fetches and decodes the PDF assets. No browser test in apps/web/src renders PdfViewer or checks these controls, so a regression in viewer interaction would not fail the suite.

Keep the replacement narrow. Render one PDF and assert one or two viewer behaviors, not the full journey that caused the CI contention. Wait with expect.element or vi.waitFor. Do not use sleeps, polling loops, or per-test timeouts. Render with await using screen = await render(...).
