Problem

The mobile pull request screens kept their state in step with effects. The Android filter menu was published from the list up to the header through a layout effect and context. Viewed-file presses were reconciled with server reads by four effects over refs. The reviewer picker scrolled to the top whenever its candidate list changed. The list's own effects were removed by #25373; this PR builds on that.

Change

  • PullRequestsScreen builds the filters (usePullRequestListFilters) and passes the header menu to a renderFrame prop. The Android toolbar reads the menu in the same render as the list. PullRequestFilterMenuContext is deleted. The filters' project order now comes from an atom that compares the sidebar order by value, so the screen does not re-render on every thread-shell change while agents run.
  • usePullRequestFilesViewed keeps each press (its version and the read that was current when the write landed) in state and derives the overlay during render. That logic is in pullRequestFilesViewed.ts, with tests. The refresh when the head changes moves to the detail query's onAnswer in state/pull-requests.ts.
  • PullRequestReviewersScreen scrolls to the top from the search handler.
  • PullRequestToolbar.android drops its useNavigationState subscription. The back handler already checks whether the PR list is in front when back is pressed.
  • usePullRequestList: the load guards read the load atoms from the registry, and rows keep cached diff stats while scrolling (below).

What this improves

  • Removes sync: 6 of the 8 effects in these files are gone. They were ref mirrors and a publish-to-parent layout effect.
  • Renders avoided: the Android header no longer needs a second commit after every list render to pick up the filter menu. Thread-shell ticks no longer re-render the pills either, unless the sidebar project order actually changes. The toolbar no longer re-renders on every navigation-state change.
  • Fixes a stats flicker: scrolling changes the visible rows, which makes a new listStats query. That query has no answer until its cached rows load, so rows shown from the previous cached answer dropped their stats and got them back a moment later. Each environment now keeps the answer it showed until the new one lands, and the shown answers keep their identity when nothing changed, so entries is not rebuilt.

Behavior changes

  • Reviewer picker: the list scrolls to the top only when the search text changes. It used to jump to the top after you toggled a reviewer or the detail refreshed, because the candidates were recomputed.
  • Viewed files: opening the Files tab no longer forces a viewed-files refresh. The query loads under its normal stale time. A forced refresh now happens when a detail answer brings a new head SHA, whether or not the files screen is mounted.
  • Android PR search: the back handler stays registered while search is open, including when another route covers Home. It returns false there and does not handle the press.
  • Page loads and refreshes: the in-flight guard reads the load atoms from the registry, so two onEndReached calls before a re-render start one request.
  • No logging changes.

Effects

  • PullRequestFilterMenuContext.tsx 1 -> deleted
  • PullRequestReviewersScreen.tsx 1 -> 0
  • usePullRequestFilesViewed.ts 4 -> 0
  • PullRequestsScreen.tsx 1 -> 1. Kept: the scroll restore when search is cancelled, because the toolbar that cancels has no handle on the list.
  • PullRequestToolbar.android.tsx 1 -> 1. Kept: it registers a native BackHandler listener while search is open.
  • Total 8 -> 2.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (7 packages), tests (3 files) all pass.
  • iOS 27.0 simulator (iPhone 17 Pro), against an isolated server with a seeded copy of real data, using a GitHub-hosted project so diff stats load:
    • cold start and load, state chip, involvement menu, the Filters menu's Project submenu, and Reset filters
    • search, pull-to-refresh, and paging far down the list
    • open detail and back; a stat patched from detail shows on the row
    • scrolling steadily while stats fill in, sampled with an accessibility snapshot after each step: 116 rows warm and 118 after a cold relaunch from cached stats, with no row going from stats to no stats
    • smoke: open a thread, switch threads, send a message, open Settings

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This cross-cutting mobile refactor changes existing pull-request list, filter, viewed-file synchronization, stats-loading, and Android navigation behavior while introducing new atom/state plumbing. The changes are localized to pull requests but broad enough in runtime impact and complexity to merit human review.

Walkthrough

The mobile pull-request changes update list loading and stats, viewed-file state, filter-menu delivery, and reviewer search scrolling. Android workspace screens pass filter data and the rendered list through a frame callback.

Changes: Pull-request list data

Layer / File(s)Summary
Registry-backed list loading
apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/usePullRequestList.ts
Load-more and refresh operations check current registry state before starting requests.
Retained environment stats
apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/usePullRequestList.ts
The list retains each environment’s last successful stats when its current query has no successful result.

Viewed-file state

Layer / File(s)Summary
Viewed-file overlay contract
apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/pullRequestFilesViewed.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/pullRequestFilesViewed.test.ts
The overlay includes in-flight presses and presses associated with the current read. Tests cover when those values remain visible.
Versioned viewed-file updates
apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/usePullRequestFilesViewed.ts
The hook stores versioned presses by review scope, ignores stale responses, and clears current failed presses.
Refresh on pull-request head changes
apps/mobile/src/state/pull-requests.ts
Files-viewed data refreshes when an existing pull-request detail changes head SHA.

Pull-request filter screen flow

Layer / File(s)Summary
Filter hook and menu state
apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestFilterMenuContext.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestListFilters.tsx
The context is removed. The filter hook returns menu and pill data and derives project ordering from environment atoms.
Screen and toolbar integration
apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestsScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestToolbar.android.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/AndroidWorkspaceSidebar.android.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/WorkspaceRootScreen.android.tsx
The screen passes filter data and its rendered list to an optional frame renderer. Workspace screens use that callback to render the toolbar and list.

Reviewer search

Layer / File(s)Summary
Search updates and list position
apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestReviewersScreen.tsx
Search input, cancellation, and query clearing use one helper that updates the query and scrolls to the platform-specific top offset.

Invalidate cached diff stats when the list head changes.

usePullRequestList applies pullRequestListStatsFamily to page entries before it builds unstatted. An old nonzero count therefore makes base.additions + base.deletions === 0 false and suppresses the new head's stat request.

The old count remains displayed while the request is pending or fails. A successful answer that reaches listStats can replace the cached row, but the stale value can prevent that answer from being requested. Clear the environment's stats map when accepting a new list head, or version the map by the corresponding head generation.

Valid, but it's on main too (pullRequestStatKey has no head SHA and pullRequestListStatsFamily came with #25373), so it isn't from this PR. Tracking it as a separate fix: stats keyed by head so a new push refetches them.

@juliusmarminge Understood. I withdraw this as a finding against this PR, since the defect predates it. Keying stats by head SHA addresses the separate issue.

Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for that follow-up?

Patch the pages returned by currentPages.

onAnswer.list does not run when the list query returns a persisted answer while disconnected. If the pages cache is empty, or its head is not continued, registry.update can leave the displayed row unchanged until the refresh completes.

@juliusmarminge You're right. patchPullRequestListEntry uses shownPullRequestListPages, so it patches the displayed pages, including a cached head when no pages are recorded. The regression test covers that case and checks that the patch remains visible while the head is current.

This finding is outdated after the rebase. I withdraw it.

165# Atom unstable
166
167Reactive state primitives for values managed by an `AtomRegistry`.
168
169An `Atom` describes how to produce or update one piece of reactive state. The registry runs atom reads, remembers current values, tracks dependencies between atoms, starts effects and streams, and cleans up atoms that are no longer used. This module includes the atom constructors and update helpers used for cached values, effect-backed values, streams, browser state, stored values, and server-rendered values.

Other high-value combinators stay on the same graph: `debounce(duration)` delays noisy publications; `withRefresh(duration)` schedules a refresh; `swr({ staleTime, ... })` adds stale-while-revalidate behavior, deferring a stale refresh until after the triggering read and skipping it outright if the source has since become fresh or the atom was disposed — so a one-shot unmounted read never kicks off a refresh for a source it no longer needs; `withFallback(fallback)` supplies an async result (marked `waiting`) while the primary is `Initial` — when the primary is writable the combined atom stays writable and forwards every write and refresh to the primary, never to the fallback; and `optimistic` / `optimisticFn` model provisional mutation state with refresh or rollback. `batch(fn)` coalesces synchronous writes, including writes that a batch commit listener itself queues — those are processed rather than dropped. ... // `mount` keeps an atom alive (and running, for effectful atoms) for a lifetime.
315
316 // 3. Effect-backed — value becomes AsyncResult<EquityGrant, HrisUnavailable>.
317 const equityGrant = Atom.make(
318 Effect.gen(function*() {
319 return yield* fetchEquityGrant("emp_1042")
320 })
321 )
322
323 // 4. Derived effectful — depends on another atom AND runs an Effect.
324 // Re-fetch the comp summary whenever the proposed raise changes.
325 const compSummary = Atom.make((get) =>
326 Effect.gen(function*() {
327 const pct = get(proposedRaisePct) // tracked dependency
328 return yield* computeCompSummary("emp_1042", pct)
329 })
330 )`
331
332For event-driven work, use `Atom.fn`. It returns an `AtomResultFn<Arg, A, E>`: a writable atom whose value is an `AsyncResult` and whose write kicks off the computation with the supplied argument. Write `Atom.Reset` to clear it or `Atom.Interrupt` to cancel the in-flight fiber. `Atom.fnSync` is the synchronous sibling (value is an `Option` until first call).

349 // replaces the in-flight one.
350 const submitRaise = Atom.fn(

355 // registry.set(submitRaise, Atom.Reset) -> back to Initial
356 // registry.set(submitRaise, Atom.Interrupt) -> cancel the in-flight write`
357
358With `{ concurrent: true }`, two overlapping calls that both resolve synchronously each still land their own `Success`/`Failure` outcome — a synchronous result is no longer lost when another concurrent call settles around the same time.
359
360> Tip: `Atom.map` / `Atom.mapResult` transform an atom's value (the latter maps inside the `AsyncResult` success). </excerpt>

367# Effect library documentation
368
369This documentation covers the Effect library and its related packages.
370
371When you need to find information about Effect, use this documentation and the Effect source code available in your environment. Avoid unrelated copies of Effect or external documentation, as they may be outdated or incorrect.
372
373Note: The examples in this documentation contain comments for illustration purposes. In practice, you would not include these comments in your code.
374
375## Writing `Effect` code
376
377Prefer `Effect.gen` for inline Effect code. For reusable functions, prefer `Effect.fn("name")` when tracing is useful and `Effect.fnUntraced` when it is not, particularly in library implementations and hot paths. Avoid functions that only wrap and return `Effect.gen`. Attach additional behaviour with combinators; this style is more readable and easier to maintain than using combinators alone.
378
379### Using Effect.gen
380
381Use `Effect.gen` to write code in an imperative style similar to async await. You can use `yield*` to access the result of an effect.

453
454unstable
455
456Since v4.0.0
457
458Returns a copy of an atom that uses a custom equality function to detect value changes.
459
460#### Details
461
462When an atom's value is rebuilt or written, the registry compares the new value against the current one to decide whether dependents and listeners should be notified. By default the comparison uses `Object.is`, so a structurally equal but referentially distinct value still triggers notifications. Providing an equality function lets the atom skip updates when the new value is equal to the current one.

Interrupt the page load before resetting it.

Atom.Reset clears the Atom.fn result but does not interrupt its in-flight computation. If refresh starts while loadNextPages is waiting, the continuation can still pass the abort check and append its old response after the refreshed head.

Suggested fix
diff
1- registry.set(pageAtom, Atom.Reset);
2+ registry.set(pageAtom, Atom.Interrupt);
3+ registry.set(pageAtom, Atom.Reset);

Not an issue: writing Reset to an Atom.fn re-runs the atom (argAtom set + refreshSelf), and the re-run disposes the previous lifetime, whose finalizer cancels the running effect (Atom.ts makeEffect: ctx.addFinalizer(cancel)). That interrupt aborts Effect.promise's signal, and loadNextPages returns on signal.aborted before writing, so an old page can't land after the refreshed head.

@juliusmarminge You're right. I missed the lifetime disposal caused by Atom.Reset. That disposal cancels the running effect and aborts the Effect.promise signal. The existing signal.aborted check then prevents loadNextPages from writing the old response.

The extra Atom.Interrupt is unnecessary. I withdraw this finding.

Read the current load error before starting another page load.

If a page load fails before React re-renders, another onEndReached call sees pageAtom.waiting === false but still sees the old, null loadError. It starts an automatic request even though retry is false. Read both errors from the registry, as this handler already does for waiting state. Effect’s AsyncResult stores the completed value and its waiting state separately. (effect.website)

✅ Addressed in commit e0af1d3

Fixed in e0af1d3859: loadMore now reads both settled errors from the registry, like the waiting check, so a failure that lands before the re-render stops the automatic load.

@juliusmarminge Thanks. The updated loadMore guard reads both settled errors from the registry, so a failure before re-render blocks automatic loading while still allowing explicit retry.
