Problem

A post-checkout hook that prints 1.1 MB causes new-worktree thread provisioning to fail with Git output exceeded 1000000 bytes and was truncated, even though native Git succeeds. The failed provisioning can leave a branch and registered worktree behind.

Change

Truncate buffered git worktree add output at the existing limit while continuing checkout progress callbacks. Git's exit status still determines whether worktree creation succeeds. This uses the existing executor options and forwards the callback-preservation option through the internal Git helper.

Scope and approval

Fixes #25370.

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. Focused server fix for the reported worktree-creation failure, with regression tests for calls with and without checkout progress.

Verification

  • Red test commit c85909f372: both new cases fail with the reported output-limit error.
  • Fix c886ffb85d: all 165 tests in GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts pass.
  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, both knip checks, GraphQL, both affected typechecks, and 165 tests pass. Final check log after merging main.
  • Two independent reviews found no blockers; proof audit passed. The evidence compares bfc7177f9f with the fix. Latest main 572cf74275 was then merged into the branch; the two-file fix is unchanged.

Real Linux dev server, started with vp run dev:server --home-dir /tmp/task-isolated-home, using the same synthetic repository and 1.1 MB post-checkout hook:

Walkthrough

Worktree creation now enables output truncation while retaining line callbacks after the captured output reaches its limit. A regression test checks that worktree creation succeeds when a checkout hook emits 1.1 MB of output, with progress reporting enabled and disabled.

Retain callbacks during worktree creation

ExecuteGitOptions adds a flag to retain line callbacks after output truncation. executeGit forwards the flag, and worktree creation enables it with truncation-marker output. The test checks worktree creation with large checkout-hook output, with and without progress reporting.

Assert checkout progress after truncation.

The hook writes its 1.1 MB output to stdout, but createWorktree parses checkout progress from stderr. The withProgress callback records nothing, and the test checks only worktree creation and HEAD. A regression that stops callbacks after truncation can therefore pass.

Send the oversized output to stderr, followed by a valid line such as Updating files: 100% (1/1). Record the callback events and assert that this event is received.
