Problem

On mobile, type a prompt in New thread, press Back without sending, then tap New thread again. The prompt is saved under Unsent, but the composer opens empty.

Change

A plain New thread now resumes the project's newest unsent draft once saved drafts have loaded. A plain New thread is a draft route with no draft id, branch, clone flag or incoming share. "Newest" means newest by creation. A draft counts as unsent when it has non-whitespace text or an attachment; settings-only drafts don't count. Text, attachments, or a picker still running in the current composer win. Opening a row from Unsent, a branch, a clone or a share keeps its existing behaviour. A draft that another draft screen on the stack already holds is never opened a second time.

The decision lives in the new-task flow provider's existing draft-binding effect, so every New thread entry point gets it. It resumes only once the flow has settled on the route's project, never on the environment's fallback project, so a following project switch cannot move another project's draft. Like opening the draft from Unsent, the resumed draft brings back its saved model, runtime and interaction modes.

Fixes pingdotgg/t3code#15974

Takeover

Taken over from @juliusmarminge's automated issue-flow PR. Main's #25812 moved draft binding from NewTaskDraftScreen into new-task-flow-provider.tsx, so the original 60-line screen effect no longer applied after merging main and was dropped. The same behaviour is rebuilt on the provider's existing effect, with no new React effect. That adds a pure route/timing check (unsentDraftResumeDue), a draft lookup (findResumableNewTaskDraftKey), and an exclusion set that includes drafts named by covered draft routes. The original had no tests; this adds 7 unit tests (3 in use-composer-drafts.test.ts, 4 in new-task-flow-state.test.ts). The previous round's captures were of the old implementation and are replaced below.

Evidence

8/8 required matrix rows captured. Real Pixel 9 emulator, Android 16, portrait 1080×2424, light, DPR 2.625, runtime font scale 0.94, Gboard, status clock frozen at 4:00. R06 uses a navigation harness; H01/H02 use a storage-read gate patch (uploaded, never committed). Full timelines, sheets and harness details: evidence index.

R01, the reported bug: New thread → choose P1 → type P1-RESUME → Back → New thread → choose P1 → repeat Back/New thread; exact timestamps are above the pair in the index.

What else changed: in the matched R01 stills only the composer text and the Send button state differ; zero other pixels differ at threshold 0. Verification log
  • Head 7c3296ff53 = captured head d7a0e4276e plus a merge of main (main touched only thread-list files, none on this PR's path) and the Macroscope fix: a picker or import still writing to the fresh draft counts as in use, so the resume no longer strands an attachment picked while drafts load. That guard narrows when resume happens and changes no captured row. A CodeRabbit follow-up makes whitespace typed into the current composer count as in use too.
  • Tests: use-composer-drafts.test.ts 76 → 79, new-task-flow-state.test.ts 9 → 13; each new test fails without the change (revert-checked). vp run check:changed passes on the final head.
  • Review round 1 (GPT-6.1-Sol, Claude Opus 5.5): one finding: a draft opened from Unsent lower in the stack could be resumed by a New thread above it. Fixed in d7a0e4276e with a test. Round 2: no code findings; one reviewer asked for current-head evidence (delivered above) and a mounted-provider test. The mobile package has no harness that mounts this provider, so the H01/H02 recordings cover that transition.
  • Proof audit: pass 1 derived the matrix; pass 2 SUFFICIENT, all 43 images and 10 recordings inspected; an independent R01 rebuild differs by 6 navigation-handle pixels (max channel delta 1).
  • CI: 31/31 checks passed on 6d368a4773; 32/32 on 05914c0420; 32/32 on the final head 7c3296ff53.
  • Bots: Macroscope's Medium finding (attachment during hydration) fixed in 05914c0420; CodeRabbit's whitespace-precedence finding fixed in 7c3296ff53; both covered by a regression test.
  • Not run: iOS (same shared JS), dark theme, tablet layouts, native share and clone lifecycles (route exclusions are unit-tested).
  • Lead: Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code in T3 Code; tests, implementation and review B: Claude Opus 5.5; review A, proof audit and capture: GPT-6.1-Sol via Codex.
Original description by @juliusmarminge (describes the replaced screen-effect implementation)

Problem

On Android, type a prompt in New thread, press Back without sending, then tap New thread again. The prompt is saved under Unsent, but the composer opens empty instead of resuming it.

Change

A plain mobile New thread resumes the selected project's newest nonempty unsent draft after persisted drafts finish loading. Text or attachments already entered in the current composer take precedence. Explicit draft links, queued-task edits, shares, branch preparation, and cloning keep their existing selection paths. The existing always-fresh draft creation API and disk-write debounce are unchanged.

Scope and approval

Fixes pingdotgg/t3code#15974

Triaged bug via the authorized automated issue flow: #15974. Mobile screen only; no server, provider, contract, web, or desktop changes.

Verification

  • Real pooled Android app, native 1080×2424, light and dark, isolated backend started with an explicit --home-dir. Reproduced before; after, New thread and repeated re-entry restore the prompt. Explicit Unsent selection and in-flow project retarget controls preserve their content.
  • vp test run for use-composer-drafts.test.ts and new-task-project-selection.test.ts: 83 passed after merging current main (74 draft-store tests, 9 project-selection tests).
  • vp run check:changed: passed after merging current main: format, lint, knip, and typecheck of the two affected packages.
  • Two independent source reviews (GPT-6.1-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5) returned MERGE. The red-test step found no existing screen test boundary without extensive hook mocks; this uses the authorized recording-proof fallback.

The independent proof audit found the single Android restoration behavior sufficiently demonstrated; fixture-dependent matrix gaps remain unverified.

Final integration: merged 4e493b1492 into the branch at 7aa0dca2b0, refreshed dependencies, and reinstalled the unchanged cached Android fingerprint. A fresh comparison of current-main screen source and the merged fix reproduced empty versus restored text. Supplemental settled-screen observations: current main, merged fix. The full interaction proof below was captured before main integration.

Capture revisions: before 3de45c6254, after 1dd0ed5542. All images show the full native surface. Diff thresholds are maximum RGB channel delta >0 and >16.

The interaction recordings show typing/back/re-entry: light before, light after, dark before, dark after. The evidence index contains timestamped steps, controls, amplified diffs, pixel statistics, and external reproduction scripts.

Visible differences: restored text expands the composer, displays model/reasoning labels, enables Send, and shifts the branch row and hero upward. Status-clock and cellular-indicator pixels also differ. The light baseline has two text draft rows; dark and after have three, so these are resume evidence rather than a matched ordering experiment. New after still pairs are pixel-identical; the supplied before dark still lacks an independent raw stability pair.

Unverified fixture cases from the matrix: exact creation-order winner, attachment-only/whitespace candidates, second project/environment isolation, delayed hydration with concurrent typing, queued-task editing, incoming share/branch/clone exclusions, and hardware/command-palette invocation. Only one project/environment and no queued/share/clone fixtures were available. iOS was not run; the changed screen is shared mobile code. No web or desktop render path changed.

Implemented by Claude Opus 5.5 through the Claude harness; triage, Android verification, and proof audit by GPT-6.1-Sol through the Codex harness.

Explanation

The title "fix(mobile): new thread resumes the project's unsent draft" states the main change. The PR makes a plain New thread resume the project's newest unsent draft after drafts load, which matches the changeset (new-task-flow-provider, unsentDraftResumeDue, findResumableNewTaskDraftKey). It uses a conventional commit prefix and is specific. It is 58 characters, so it is concise.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support [#15974]. Stack.tsx passes route draft context. The provider and flow-state helpers select eligible drafts and exclude covered routes. Draft-state helpers protect current text, attachments, and active operations. The added tests cover these decisions. No unrelated server, web, desktop, or provider feature changes are shown.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#15974] The primary resume behavior is implemented. The provider resumes the newest eligible project draft after loading and preserves route exclusions and current composer activity. The current head adds no dismissal flush. The whole-PR diff for NewTaskDraftScreen.tsx is empty, and the provider only reads persisted drafts. Text entered within the 200 ms persistence debounce can still be lost when the user navigates away, so the issue's minimum persistence safeguard remains unmet.

Resolution

Call flushComposerDrafts() on the NewTask dismiss and unmount path, including the closeNewTask/goBack flow. Add an automated test that enters text within the debounce window, navigates away, and verifies that the draft persists.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It includes the problem, change, scope, approval, verification, reproduction steps, evidence matrix, screenshots, recordings, test counts, CI results, and items not run. The Scope and approval section is incomplete because it does not link a maintainer approval comment for the direction and scope. The description links issue pingdotgg/t3code#15974 and states that the work was taken over from an automated issue-flow PR. The evidence links use external hosts, so repository reviewers cannot verify them directly. The change affects the new-task flow provider, state management, and tests across several files.

Resolution

Add an explicit maintainer approval reference in the Scope and approval section. Link issue pingdotgg/t3code#15974 and the discussion or comment that approved the direction and scope. If no approval was required, explain why this change is a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug. State the scope boundary in the same section. Consider moving the long evidence links out of the main body. Mirror the key before-and-after evidence in the repository when possible.
