Problem

Pasting Read https://example.com/_handle_/status/1 and open src/__test__.tsx into the rich text composer rewrites the underscores as asterisks in the stored/provider-bound prompt. Draft rebuilds repeat the corruption. Pasting Markdown inside inline code also changes literal content.

Change

Keep underscores literal in recognizable URL/path tokens and filenames. Preserve single-line code-span pastes literally, and route newline/backtick pastes through the existing representable Markdown path. Disable Tiptap paste rules because the composer already parses clipboard Markdown; this prevents a second pass from styling literal code contents. Dropped text also stops receiving that second styling pass; its serialized value is unchanged.

Scope and approval

Fixes pingdotgg/t3code#25180

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow; #25180. Ordinary bug fixes and fix PRs are authorized. Web and desktop share this composer; native mobile has a separate editor and is unchanged.

Verification

  • Failing tests first reproduced URL/path paste, stored-draft rebuild, inline-code paste, and pasted code markers. Additional failing paste/remount tests caught newline and backtick cases before their fixes.
  • Final focused tests: 246 rich-text unit tests, 19 input-browser tests, and 1 citation-draft browser test pass.
  • Final vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, and unit tests pass. Browser initialization timed out under VM load; both affected browser suites subsequently passed standalone.
  • Independent GPT-6.1-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5 reviews both returned MERGE on the final diff after three rounds.
  • Real app: Linux Chromium through the T3 preview, synthetic text/plain clipboard events, unsent drafts. Base d1f701849b versus head 2e2111ba19. Proof index, recordings, diffs and state oracles, reproduction driver.

Second-pass proof audit: INSUFFICIENT for the full matrix. The six accepted pairs support their limited claims; an independent 390px-light runtime rebuild preserved the exact URL/path bytes.

Evidence is partial: clean matched URL/path and pasted-code pairs cover 390px light/dark and 1440px light. Desktop dark was rejected for unrelated shell differences. Draft rebuild, existing-code-context, Markdown controls and added edge cases have automated tests/runtime observations but lack accepted clean capture pairs. The pending-question literal editor was not seeded. Trusted OS clipboard/Electron integration was not checked. This PR is not presented as merge-ready.

Model/harness: GPT-6.1-Sol via Codex in T3 Code; Claude Opus 5.5 delegated test, implementation and review steps.

When a path token ends with _ inside an already-open underscore emphasis span, parseInlineMarkdown treats the closing delimiter as literal, so subsequent text is incorrectly styled and the underscore leaks into buildTiptapContent. Only apply the literal-token shortcut when that underscore cannot close the active stack delimiter.

Walkthrough

The inline Markdown parser now preserves underscores in matching URL- and path-like words. The editor changes paste handling in code blocks and inline code spans. Regression tests cover parsing, pasting, and draft serialization.

Changes: Rich-text composer

Layer / File(s)Summary
URL and path underscore parsing
apps/web/src/composer-rich-text.ts, apps/web/src/composer-rich-text.test.ts, apps/web/src/composer-rich-text-doc.test.ts
The parser treats underscores in matching URL- and path-like words as literal text. Tests cover those examples, explicit emphasis markers, and draft round trips.
Paste handling in code spans
apps/web/src/components/ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.input.browser.test.tsx, apps/web/src/composer-rich-text-doc.test.ts
Tiptap paste rules are disabled. The editor inserts qualifying inline-code pastes verbatim; other inline-code pastes continue through Markdown parsing. Browser tests cover code-span pastes and serialization.

Filename-and-line references containing underscores can change when a draft is rebuilt. Fix that narrow case and strengthen the paste regression tests; the remaining risk is bounded.

Explanation

The title "fix(web): pasted URLs and paths keep their underscores" follows conventional commit format and names the primary change: the composer no longer rewrites underscores in pasted URLs and paths. The raw summary confirms the underscore-handling change in composer-rich-text.ts, the paste-rule change in ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx, and the matching tests. The title does not cover the inline-code paste fixes, but the PR objectives describe those as secondary aspects, so the title is related to the main change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section gives the bug, its reproduction input, and the inline-code issue. The Change section explains the fix and the Tiptap paste-rule change. Scope cites issue #25180 and states that web and desktop share the composer while native mobile is unchanged. Verification lists focused test counts, a full check run, reviews, and real-app evidence with before and after screenshots. It also states the gaps in evidence and that the PR is not merge-ready. The description does not include the template's HTML comments, which is acceptable. The description is largely complete, so it passes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #25180 has three coding objectives. The reviewed diff addresses each one.

(1) URL and path underscores stay literal on paste and on draft rebuild. apps/web/src/composer-rich-text.ts adds LITERAL_UNDERSCORE_WORD (//|.[a-z][a-z0-9]\W$/i). parseInlineMarkdown skips underscore delimiters that fall inside whitespace-delimited words matching this pattern. Draft rebuild (buildDocJson) uses the same parser, so reload, thread switch, and stash restore also keep these bytes. The browser test 'sends pasted underscores in a URL and a path exactly as pasted' and the doc-rebuild unit test cover this path. The composer-rich-text unit tests cover the parser change.

(2) Single-line paste into inline code stays literal. ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx now treats a paste as literal when the caret has a code mark and the pasted text has no newline or backtick. The browser test 'Markdown inside inline code' expects xy plus paste 'a_b_ c' to serialize as xa_b_ **c**y.

(3) Markdown markers inside a pasted code span stay literal. enablePasteRules: false removes the second Tiptap styling pass. The browser test 'bold markers inside a pasted code span' expects 'see **x** now' to round-trip unchanged.

Residual boundary: multiline or backtick pastes into a code span still take the existing Markdown path, and the code comment states that this path splits the span. The browser tests for these inputs assert only that the serialized value rebuilds unchanged. They do not assert the exact literal output. The issue gives no explicit expected output for these inputs, so this assessment does not treat it as a failing requirement. The PR states this boundary openly.

Non-coding items in the PR (manual proof captures, reviewer approvals, model notes) were not assessed.

Explanation

All changed hunks relate to #25180.

  • apps/web/src/composer-rich-text.ts: underscore literal rule for URL, path, and filename words. This is the parser change that fixes paste and rebuild.
  • apps/web/src/components/ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx: enablePasteRules: false, and the literal-paste branch for code spans. Both implement the code-span objective.
  • apps/web/src/composer-rich-text.test.ts, composer-rich-text-doc.test.ts, and ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.input.browser.test.tsx: regression tests for the objectives above.
  • composer-rich-text-doc.test.ts also changes an existing paste test input from src/test.tsx to test. The change keeps the bold and italic emphasis assertion valid, because the new parser rule treats path-like words as literal. This is a consequence of the intended behavior, not an unrelated change.

No unrelated refactoring, shell, or native mobile editor change appears in the reviewed file list. Scope was assessed from the whole-PR diff against the merge base d1f701849b, using the changed files and the hunks inspected.

Assert the pasted content before the rebuild check.

The rebuild test checks only that the serialized value survives a remount. If a multiline or backtick-containing paste into the code span is dropped, the unchanged `xy` document still round-trips, so the test passes. Add an explicit expected serialized value for each pasted input. Assert that value before mounting rebuilt, then keep the rebuild assertion.

Preserve filename-and-line references.

When parseInlineMarkdown receives __init__.py:42, the filename pattern does not match because the suffix ends with word characters. The leading __ opens an unmatched bold span. Serialization then rewrites the value with bold markers. Treat line and optional column suffixes as part of the filename token, and add parser and draft round-trip regression cases.
