Problem

The file explorer beside an open file has a fixed width. Its toggle can hide or show it, but long file names stay truncated and the explorer cannot be resized independently of the outer panel.

Change

Add a left-edge drag handle using the existing resize hook and handle. Support keyboard resizing with Tab focus, arrow keys, and Home/End, and expose the current width and limits to assistive technology. Save width changes and restore them after reopening or reloading. Observe the preview row so a remembered width is clamped as the outer panel narrows, with a 160px explorer minimum, a 560px maximum, and 256px reserved for file content where space permits.

The component is shared by the web and desktop clients.

Scope and approval

Addresses #11559 and follows the maintainer's suggested fix: add the inner handle, persist width, and clamp it to the current panel. This is scoped to that explorer.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed: formatting, lint, both knip checks, affected-package typechecks, and 39 relevant tests passed.
  • Six focused browser tests cover keyboard focus and resizing, accessible width values, saved-width restoration, row-dependent bounds, drag persistence, unmount cleanup, and the explorer-only layout. The keyboard regression test failed on the previous implementation before the fix. Storage-failure coverage verifies that keyboard and pointer resizing remain usable when localStorage rejects writes, matching the existing shared hook behavior.
  • Isolated development app, Chromium on Linux at 1440×900: baseline dragging left the explorer at 352px; the new handle resized it from 496px to 256px and back. Hide/show and reload restored 496px. Restoring the outer panel to 540px clamped the explorer to 283px; maximizing restored 496px. No page errors occurred.
  • Native desktop packaging and remote/tunnel connections were not exercised.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds persisted, user-controlled resizing to the file explorer and changes its default sizing on the existing open-file path. It also introduces a line-level lint suppression, so the behavior and static-analysis exception warrant human review.

Walkthrough

The file browser now uses a pane that can resize when a preview path exists. The pane measures its parent row, applies width bounds, and persists width changes. Browser tests cover keyboard and pointer resizing, storage failures, and drag cleanup.

Add keyboard support to the file-explorer resize handle.

useResizeDrag provides only pointer-event handlers. RightPanelResizeHandle remains a non-focusable div, and no other file-explorer control supplies keyboard resizing. Add focusability, arrow-key resizing, and aria-valuenow, aria-valuemin, and aria-valuemax for the current width and bounds.

External image Minor · Clear the drag session when the splitter unmounts. · FileExplorerPane.tsx:45-55

apps/web/src/components/files/FileExplorerPane.tsx:45-55 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear the drag session when the splitter unmounts.

FileExplorerPane stays mounted when resizable changes from true to false, so useResizeDrag keeps its active session. If that change happens during a drag, the splitter unmounts while it holds pointer capture. The hook never receives the matching pointer-up or cancel event, so the body cursor and user-select styles stay set. The session also keeps drag.current set, so later presses on the restored splitter return early. The session ends only on window blur, hook unmount, or a storageKey change. Because the hook's reset key tracks only storageKey, the resizable transition does not clean up the session.

A trigger exists in the inspected code. The explorer can show a chat-linked folder as a file until its read settles, and resizable then becomes false. A user can press the splitter during that pending read.

The fix is to include the enabled state in the drag reset key. A reset cancels the session and restores the committed width. The exact useResizeDrag reset behavior is inferred from the inspected hook source. The current drag session holds only the previewed width, and cancelling it leaves persisted state unchanged.

Use the truthiness check for the explorer boundary.

openFile("") preserves the empty path. While its folder read is pending, previewPath is "", so resizable={previewPath !== null} enables the resizable explorer even though no preview exists. This replaces the previous min-w-0 flex-1 no-preview layout with the constrained resizable layout and resize affordance.

Persist the width before updating React state.

If setLocalStorageItem throws, setWidthState has already accepted the new width. Keyboard or drag resizing then appears to commit, but reloading restores the old width. Write first, and update state only after the write succeeds. If drag persistence fails, also restore the live CSS width. Based on learnings: “only update in-memory React state after the persistence write succeeds.”

Source: Learnings

Keeping best-effort persistence for this UI preference. The existing shared hook on main already updates the session width before attempting localStorage. Resizing should remain usable when browser storage is blocked or full; rolling back every failed save would change that behavior for the shared panel controls. The failure is logged and the last saved preference stays unchanged.

Commit 52f045c56a7c87b8050f84842de3181b39a5b14e documents this constraint and adds Chromium coverage that forces QuotaExceededError for width writes. Keyboard and pointer resizing both keep the visible width and ARIA values consistent, while the stored preference remains unchanged. All 39 relevant tests and vp run check:changed pass.

@07rjain You're right. I applied a persistence-first rule too broadly to this UI preference.

The supplied code explicitly keeps resizing usable when storage fails and logs the failure. Requiring rollback would defeat that behavior. I withdraw the finding; no persistence-order change is needed.

thanks @07rjain. your implementation correctly reused the existing drag controls, preserved a saved width, and covered keyboard access and container bounds.

maintainer edits are disabled on your fork, so i rebuilt the focused change as https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/25737 rather than pushing to your branch. it keeps those behaviors and credits you in the commit trailer.

i compared your original diff against the replacement. row measurement moved from an effect to a ref callback, removing the lint suppression and host ref. the standalone browser test file was dropped because this task prohibits new test files; its scenarios were exercised directly in the app. no feature behavior was intentionally dropped. blacksmith check:changed and react compiler coverage passed; the replacement includes before/after images and a drag recording. native desktop packaging and remote/tunnel paths remain unverified.

Thanks, @maria-rcks! I’ve now enabled maintainer edits on #25242. Thank you for refining the implementation, verifying the behavior, and crediting my contribution. Happy to proceed with the replacement PR #25737.

Thank you @07rjain for building this. Your change is carried forward in pingdotgg/t3code#25737, which keeps your approach (a saved, resizable file-explorer width using the existing resize handle) and adds keyboard resizing, container-aware bounds and checks in the real app. Closing this one in favour of that PR; you're credited there.
