Problem

The favicon store learned a draft thread's project only when ChatView pushed it in from an effect (registerFaviconProjectForThread, capped at 100 threads). usePreviewBridge then needed a second effect to flush captures that arrived before the project was known. A capture for a thread that ChatView had not registered stayed pending and showed no icon.

Change

  • recordFaviconForThread(threadRef, favicon) now looks up the project at capture time, from the thread shell or else the composer draft, and gets the environment host from the prepared connection. Captures it cannot place yet wait per thread, and the next capture that can place them flushes them too.
  • useFaviconForThreadUrl also reads the thread's pending captures, so the thread's tab shows the icon while it waits. When a stored and a pending entry match the same origin, the newer capture is shown.
  • Removed the projectRefByThreadKey registry along with registerFaviconProjectForThread. flushPendingFaviconsForThread is now private.

What this improves

  • Bug: a draft thread's capture is filed under the draft's project without needing ChatView to register it first. Test: browserFaviconStore.test.ts › "files a draft thread's capture under the draft's project with no view registering it". It fails when run against main's browserFaviconStore.ts.
  • Sync removed: ChatView no longer copies the project into the favicon store, and the preview bridge no longer runs a flush effect.

Behavior changes

  • Pending captures are now written to persisted storage when the next capture for that thread arrives, not as soon as the project or connection shows up. If no later capture comes, the pending icon still shows on the tab but is not persisted. Pending state was never persisted on main either.
  • No logging changes.

Effects

  • ChatView.tsx: lost 1 effect (favicon registration)
  • usePreviewBridge.ts: 2 -> 1. The bridge subscription stays because it is an external subscription with cleanup.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/web/src/browserFaviconStore.test.ts: 7 passed. The draft-thread test fails when main's store file is swapped in. "shows a newer pending capture over the stored favicon for the same origin" fails if a stored entry takes precedence over a pending one.
  • vp run check:changed after rebasing onto main: format, lint, knip, typecheck, and tests (14 files) all pass.

The rightPanelStore hunks from the original unit (openDiff, reconcileAllFileSurfaces, collapse, the maximize request removal, diff scope reset) are left out because their consumers live in other units.

Walkthrough

The favicon store now resolves thread project and connection metadata internally. It retains captures when metadata is unavailable and checks pending captures during thread URL lookup. The preview bridge records captures without supplying project or hostname values.

Changes: Favicon capture flow

Layer / File(s)Summary
Thread project metadata resolution
apps/web/src/browserFaviconStore.ts, apps/web/src/browserFaviconStore.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx
The store resolves a thread’s project from shell state or composer draft state. It removes the registered project-reference map and ChatView no longer registers thread projects. Tests cover both project sources.
Capture recording and lookup
apps/web/src/browserFaviconStore.ts, apps/web/src/components/preview/usePreviewBridge.ts, apps/web/src/browserFaviconStore.test.ts
The store reads project and connection metadata when recording captures, retains pending captures, and checks pending captures during URL lookup. The preview bridge uses the simplified recording call. Tests cover pending captures and offline capture behavior.

A favicon captured while a draft thread is open may not be saved under its project until another capture arrives. Fix draft project lookup before merging, or accept this bounded gap.

Show the newer pending favicon.

If a project already has a stored favicon for a public origin, and a newer capture arrives while the prepared connection is unavailable, recordFaviconForThread retains the new capture as pending. This lookup returns the older stored favicon first, so the thread tab does not show the new capture. Compare capture times for the matching stored and pending entries, or otherwise give the newer pending capture precedence.

✅ Confirmed as addressed by @juliusmarminge

Fixed in c5cbf93aa3: the thread lookup now compares capture times and shows the newer of the stored and pending entries. Test: "shows a newer pending capture over the stored favicon for the same origin".

@juliusmarminge The supplied code confirms that lookupFaviconForThread returns the newer pending capture instead of the older stored favicon. This addresses the finding.

apps/web/src/browserFaviconStore.ts:174-190 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Resolve draft projects by thread reference, not only by the scoped key.

A draft can open a browser session before promotion. ChatView derives activeThreadRef from the local draft, and createBrowserSurface opens a session for that reference. ElectronBrowserHost then mounts HostedBrowserWebview without requiring a server shell. usePreviewBridge can therefore call recordFaviconForThread while readThreadShell has no project.

The composer stores this draft under draftId, not scopedThreadKey(threadRef). Both project readers return null in this state. The capture remains pending instead of being persisted under the draft project, and the thread-tab lookup cannot resolve the project.
