Problem

Pull request summaries shared by the sidebar, the right panel tabs, the pull requests page and the detail panel were copied in by components, using two layout effects that ran after each commit. The detail copy was ordered by the detail's server read time. A newer checks read therefore tied with the summary the detail had already placed, and it was dropped. The result: after a checks refresh, the detail panel's checks rollup and merge control kept showing the previous checks state (for example "pending" after the checks passed) until the detail itself was read again.

Change

 • packages/client-runtime: createEnvironmentQueryAtomFamily and createEnvironmentRpcQueryAtomFamily take an optional onAnswer(target, value, registry). It runs where each server answer lands, before readers see it. Values restored from persistence and emitted provisional values are not answers. createPullRequestEnvironmentAtoms passes handlers through for list, detail and checks, and createLinkedPullRequestSummaryAtomFamily does the same for the linked summary.
 • apps/web/src/state/pullRequests.ts records answers from the list, detail, checks and linked summary into the shared summary. Metadata and checks keep separate freshness per pull request (PullRequestObservations). List, detail and linked-summary answers update the metadata through newestPullRequestObservation, and also record their checks state. Checks answers update only the checks state. Each side keeps its newest read: server read time when both reads report one, otherwise arrival time. useSharedPullRequestSummary(environmentId, reference) now only reads. Its current/observedAt arguments are gone, and so is the observations field of the merged list query.
 • The cold-start detail snapshot is written from fresh (allowStale: false) detail answers. It is no longer written by an effect in usePullRequestDetail.

What this improves

 • Bug fixed: a newer checks read now replaces older checks in the shared summary. Tests are in pull request observations (apps/web/src/state/pullRequests.test.ts).
 • A checks read no longer carries the detail's older metadata forward. An earlier revision of this PR stamped the whole detail with the checks' read time, so a checks refresh flipped a newer list's mergeable back to the detail's conflicting. Two tests cover the two directions, and both failed on that revision: keeps a newer list's mergeability when a checks read lands after it, where a checks read follows a newer list read, and keeps a newer checks read when an older list read lands after it, where a list read taken before the checks read keeps its metadata but not its checks.
 • New runtime tests: persisted environment queries > hands each server answer to onAnswer before readers see it and does not hand a value restored from persistence to onAnswer (packages/client-runtime/src/state/runtime.test.ts).
 • Sync removed: three effects that copied query data into atoms or localStorage after render.

Behavior changes

 • Only server answers update the shared summary. Values restored from persistence on a cold start (detail, checks, list) are no longer published to other surfaces. The detail panel still shows its own cached detail as before.
 • Answers are published whether or not a component reading that list or detail is mounted, and before the first render that reads them. Before, they were published after the reader's layout effects.
 • The detail snapshot is now written from any fresh detail read, including the right panel tab's allowStale: false read, not only from the detail panel. It is no longer rewritten when a value restored from persistence comes back.
 • In the shared summary, a checks answer updates only the checks state. Its state field no longer overrides the pull request state there; metadata reads still decide state. The detail panel's own live detail still applies the checks read's state, as it does on main.
 • No logging changes. No refreshes were added or removed.

After a detail panel remains open in a hidden tab for more than five minutes, later checks answers stop updating the shared checks status, which stays frozen until another detail read. livePullRequestAnswersAtom is only accessed with registry get/set and is not retained by the mounted panel, so its idle TTL evicts the saved detail; retain the answers for the panel's lifetime or reconstruct the detail when handling checks.

This targeted livePullRequestAnswersAtom, which no longer exists. aaff9c50aa replaced it with pullRequestObservationsAtom, which keeps metadata and checks freshness separately, and the mounted panel holds that atom for as long as it is open:

 • usePullRequestDetail calls useSharedPullRequestSummary(environmentId, reference) (usePullRequestDetail.ts#L91). That hook calls useAtomValue(pullRequestObservationsAtom(pullRequestSummaryKey(environmentId, reference))) (pullRequests.ts#L332).
 • The detail and checks handlers write to the same key. Their input is { ...reference, allowStale } or reference, and the key only uses projectId, repository, and number (pullRequests.ts#L235-L258).

A mounted atom has a subscriber, so setIdleTTL never evicts it while the panel is open, and a hidden tab does not change that. Eviction only happens after every reader has unmounted, and at that point nothing is left to show a frozen status.

🟠 High state/pullRequests.ts:181

A checks-only refresh can revert newer pull request metadata: if detail at time 100 says mergeability: "mergeable" and a list or linked-summary answer at 200 says "conflicting", checks at 300 republishes the old detail fields as a fresh summary. Because the resulting observation is timestamped with 300, newestPullRequestObservation accepts it and usePullRequestDetail displays the stale value. Update checks without promoting the detail metadata to the checks read time.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This change introduces a cross-cutting answer-driven cache and ordering model across shared pull-request runtime infrastructure and multiple production UI paths. Its behavior is substantial, with unresolved high-severity stale-data risks requiring targeted human review.

Walkthrough

Environment query atoms now support answer callbacks. Pull-request state uses those callbacks to record timestamped list, detail, checks, and linked-summary observations. Shared-summary consumers read the recorded state instead of publishing caller-provided summaries.

Changes: Pull Request Observation Flow

Layer / File(s)Summary
Query answer callback contract and execution
packages/client-runtime/src/state/runtime.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/runtime.test.ts
Environment query atoms accept onAnswer handlers and invoke them for executed answers before readers observe the values. Persisted values follow the same answer path. Tests cover callback order and persisted values.
Pull-request handler wiring
packages/client-runtime/src/state/pullRequests.ts
Pull-request atom factories accept optional answer handlers for list, detail, and checks queries, and pass each handler to its query family.
Observation resolution and snapshot updates
apps/web/src/state/pullRequests.ts, apps/web/src/state/pullRequests.test.ts
Timestamped detail and checks answers determine live observations. List and linked-summary answers are recorded. Fresh detail answers write snapshots, and tests cover checks ordering and stale list observations.
Shared-summary consumers
apps/web/src/state/pullRequests.ts, apps/web/src/components/RightPanelTabs.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ThreadStatusIndicators.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestsPage.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/usePullRequestDetail.ts
The shared-summary hook no longer accepts a caller-provided summary or timestamp. Consumers use the hook without those arguments, and merged query views no longer carry observations or timestamps.

Explanation

The description follows the template's Problem, Change, and Verification sections with substantive content. It is missing the "Scope and approval" section, which requires a linked triaged issue or maintainer-approved discussion (or a justification for a small obvious fix). The description also does not include a clear before/after or the UI-impact note, though the change is primarily internal state wiring with no direct UI markup change described. The Verification section reports test results, and the description states render metrics are pending. The title-style conventional commit line is not present in the description body, and the template's CONTRIBUTING.md reference is not addressed. Overall the description is mostly complete but lacks the approval/scope justification.

Resolution

Add a "Scope and approval" section. Link the triaged bug issue or the discussion where a maintainer approved this direction and scope, and include the approval comment. If no prior issue exists, explain why this change qualifies as a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug. The change touches several packages (client-runtime and web) and adds a new public callback API, so the scope justification should explain why both packages must change together for the same fix. Also state any items not verified, such as the pending render metrics, in the Verification section.

376# Atom unstable
377
378Reactive state primitives for values managed by an `AtomRegistry`.
379
380An `Atom` describes how to produce or update one piece of reactive state. The registry runs atom reads, remembers current values, tracks dependencies between atoms, starts effects and streams, and cleans up atoms that are no longer used. This module includes the atom constructors and update helpers used for cached values, effect-backed values, streams, browser state, stored values, and server-rendered values.

383
384## Batching
385
386### batch
387
388unstable
389
390Since v4.0.0
391
392Runs synchronous atom updates as a batch.
393
394#### Details
395
396Stale nodes are rebuilt and listeners are notified after the callback completes, so dependent updates observe the final batched state.

407## Combinators
408
409### autoDispose
410
411unstable
412
413Since v4.0.0
414
415Allows a reactive value to be disposed of when it is not in use.
416
417#### Details
418
419Atoms have this behavior by default, so use this to undo `keepAlive` on a copied atom.
420
421#### Signature

428
429### debounce
430
431unstable
432
433Since v4.0.0
434
435Creates an atom that publishes source changes only after the source has stopped changing for the specified duration.
436
437#### Details
438
439The current source value is used immediately, and any pending debounce timer is cleared when the derived atom is disposed.
440
441#### Signature

454
455### initialValue
456
457unstable
458
459Since v4.0.0
460
461Pairs an atom with an initial value for registry initialization.
462
463#### When to use
464
465Use to preload an atom value when constructing or seeding a registry.
466
467#### Details
468
469The returned tuple can be supplied to `AtomRegistry` initial values so the atom starts with the provided value before it is first rebuilt. Pass `{ skipInitialRun: true }` to keep the value of an effect or stream atom instead of running its effect on mount (see InitialValueOptions).

487### setIdleTTL
488
489unstable
490
491Since v4.0.0
492
493Returns a copy of an atom with an idle time-to-live: finite durations dispose it after inactivity, while an infinite duration keeps it alive.

509### setLazy
510
511unstable
512
513Since v4.0.0
514
515Sets whether an atom should be lazy.
516
517#### Details
518
519Lazy atoms defer recomputation while they have no active listeners or active non-lazy dependents, rebuilding the next time their value is observed.

550### RegistryProvider
551
552unstable
553
554Since v4.0.0
555
556Provides a stable `AtomRegistry` to a React subtree, optionally seeding initial atom values and overriding registry scheduling or idle settings.
557
558#### When to use
559
560Use to scope atom state, scheduling, and idle cleanup to a React subtree.
561
562#### Details
563
564The provider creates one `AtomRegistry` with `AtomRegistry.make`, passes it through `RegistryContext.Provider`, and forwards `initialValues`, `scheduleTask`, `timeoutResolution`, and `defaultIdleTTL` only when that registry is created.
565
566#### Gotchas
567
568Option changes after the first render do not rebuild the registry. When the provider unmounts, registry disposal is delayed briefly and canceled if the provider remounts before the timeout fires.

311L163: ### What steps can reproduce the bug?
312L164:
313L165: I was using Claude Opus 5 to evaluate Effect v4, and it uncovered what it believes to be a genuine, reproducible bug.
314L166: The following is the bug report prepared by Claude.
315L167:
316L168: * * *
317L169:
318L170: An `Atom` backed by a `Stream` that holds an external resource (via `Effect.acquireRelease`) is
319L171: never disposed — and its finalizer never runs — when both of the following hold:
320L172: 1. it is consumed through a derived atom rather than being subscribed to directly, and
321L173: 2. the registry's `idleTTL` is greater than the stream's emission interval.
322L174:
323L175: The leak is self-sustaining: the node is scheduled for removal, but the still-running stream's own
324L176: writes cancel the pending removal, so it is rescheduled forever.
325L177: Standalone repro — no UI framework involved, `effect` core only:
326L178:
327L179: // npm i effect@4.0.0-rc.112 && node repro.mjs <idleTTL> <emitIntervalMs>

388
389`idleTTL` | emit interval | result
390--- | --- | ---
391400 | 100ms | LEAKED (3/3 runs)
392400 | 2000ms | CLEAN
3935000 | 100ms | LEAKED
3945000 | 2000ms | LEAKED
3950 | 100ms | CLEAN
3961 | 100ms | CLEAN
397
398Subscribing to `feedAtom` directly is always clean; the leak requires the derived-atom path.
399
400### Additional information
401
402The mechanism appears to be in `AtomRegistry`:
403
404 * `Node.remove()` correctly detaches the child and calls `registry.removeNode(parent)`.
405 * `removeNode` sees `atomHasTtl(atom) === true` and therefore defers removal via
406`setNodeTimeout(node)` instead of removing immediately.
407 * The stream is still running. Every emission calls `ensureNode(atom)`, which does
408`else if (this.atomHasTtl(atom)) { this.removeNodeTimeout(node) }` — cancelling its own
409pending removal.
410
411So a node awaiting a TTL sweep is resurrected by its own still-running producer, indefinitely.
412With `idleTTL: 0`/`undefined`, `atomHasTtl` is false, `removeNode` deletes immediately, and there
413is no window in which the resurrection can happen — which is why those cases are clean.
414
415A possible fix would be for `ensureNode` not to cancel a pending removal timeout when the node
416has `listeners.size === 0 && children.size === 0` — i.e. writes originating from the node's own
417producer should not keep an already-orphaned node alive.
418
419Note this affects `@effect/atom-react` too when the module-level default registry is used
420(`defaultIdleTTL: 400`); it is only avoided with `<RegistryProvider>`, which leaves `idleTTL`
421undefined. See the companion issue (#7527) about `@effect/atom-solid` hardcoding a TTL.
422
423Minor, possibly separate: passing `defaultIdleTTL: 0` emits
424`TimeoutNaNWarning: NaN is not a number. Timeout duration was set to 1.`</excerpt>

Preserve live answers across five-minute answer gaps.

effect@4.0.5 resets the atom's idle timer on each registry.get and registry.set, so successful checks answers keep it alive. The atom is still unmounted and has a finite five-minute TTL. If no successful detail or checks answer reaches recordLiveAnswer for more than five minutes, the node can be removed. The next checks answer recreates it with detail: null; livePullRequestObservation returns null, so the shared summary keeps stale checks.

Keep live-answer state mounted for the observed summary lifetime, or store it in that same long-lived atom.

6Review comment at @apps/web/src/state/pullRequests.ts around lines 189 - 194:
7Update `livePullRequestAnswersAtom` so live-answer state remains available for
8the lifetime of the observed summary instead of being evicted after a
9five-minute answer gap. Remove the finite idle TTL or store the state in the
10same long-lived atom used by the summary, preserving prior detail when a later
11checks answer arrives.

Holding (review P2): stamping the whole detail with the checks' newer timestamp lets old mergeability overwrite a newer list observation (mergeable flips back to conflicting on a checks refresh). Metadata and checks need separate freshness.

Added 4 commits

 • fix(web): checks refreshes no longer bring back old mergeabilityac88f7c
 • fix(web): pull request checks stay current after a checks refreshaf6cef2
 • chore: leave the effect budget to a separate sweepc0d81a0
 • chore: lower the effect budget for the removed effectsf3aea79

Hold resolved: metadata and checks now track freshness separately, so a checks refresh can't roll back newer mergeability (tests in pullRequests.test.ts). The later Macroscope finding was answered and resolved: it described the replaced atom.
