Unproven: end-to-end recovery through signed-in managed T3 Connect provisioning on the current head. That step needs a signed-in test server; using Shivam's personal account or copied Connect credentials is prohibited. The current recording exercises the real host recovery services with temporary, unsigned tunnel provisioning.

Verification status: blocked pending an authorized dedicated T3 Connect test account. Normal signed-in managed recovery on this head still needs a native client recording and host logs showing stale readiness, Cloudflare error 1033, and connector replacement. The quick-tunnel evidence below verifies the host recovery services but does not satisfy that managed-flow check.

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24936. A Linux host can lose its IPv6 tunnel connections while cloudflared still reports four ready connections. Cloudflare returns error 1033, the mobile app shows the host offline, and T3 previously left it that way until someone killed cloudflared.

T3 now confirms that mismatch after a two-minute grace period and asks the existing supervisor to replace the stale connector. It checks the process ID and the latest health result before killing anything. Healthy results reset recovery; unsuccessful restarts back off up to one hour. Other recognized Cloudflare errors, such as DNS error 1016, do not trigger this restart. Initial detection still uses the existing readiness events, manual health check, or five-minute poll.

Client evidence

Tested on physical corex, Linux x64, using HTTP/2 over IPv6. The original before/after uses cloudflared 2026.10.0; the refreshed current-head run uses 2026.10.4. The client is the native Android T3 Code app 2.0.0, build 147. The reporter named the mobile app but did not identify its OS.

The fault silently drops both directions of only the connector's four established IPv6 TCP sockets. New sockets can connect. This reproduces the reporter's stale-ready state without changing the shared router's prefix. It is a socket-loss test, not a router restart or an actual prefix replacement.

Before

Server 72dde22b6f092491fac4ddc480bc609bb8092bfd, POCO F4 on Android 14, authenticated managed T3 Connect tunnel. The app becomes disconnected. Cloudflare returns 530/1033, T3 detects no_connector, and the same connector still reports four ready connections more than four minutes later. It never restarts.

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/cbb2b231-84ed-4aec-a50d-552ba0a1c5af

The clip combines the outage onset at twice normal speed and the still-disconnected end state. The idle gap is omitted. This is an earlier baseline recording from a signed-in test server. That server was stopped and its copied credential removed. Current verification uses the unsigned setup below; this recording does not verify signed-in provisioning or recovery on the current head.

After

Current server and recovery source 4686872a642fd78a7e92fa58b5b31daaac3bafe5, POCO M3 Pro on Android 13, native app 2.0.0 build 147. Main was merged at 1fe8ddd222d127815064d400d1667c88f60cd71a. The two recovery modules and their focused tests are unchanged from the previous recording, but main updates cloudflared to 2026.10.4. This run uses that binary, with its SHA256 checked against the pinned release hash.

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/95fc062e-14f5-484d-90ff-1a54e6492206

For this recording, a temporary harness loads the real ManagedEndpointRuntime and ConnectReachability layers from the current head and points cloudflared at a real isolated T3 server. Cloudflare's unauthenticated quick-tunnel API supplies temporary credentials; a launcher adds its local ingress config. HTTP probes, the disk secret store, cloudflared, the supervisor, and the mobile connection are real. The paired app has one public route and no LAN fallback. This avoids signing the test server into a personal T3 account. It does not retest Connect sign-in or provisioning.

An initial drop recovered through cloudflared's own socket reconnects. After those replacements registered, the recorded fault at 02:20:49 UTC dropped their four IPv6 sockets too. Those drop rules also cover the four ports from the initial check. No rules target sockets opened after that second fault. The same PID 308825 still reported four ready connections while the app showed disconnected. The production health check returned no_connector at 02:22:06 UTC.

The confirming check requested restart at 02:24:07 UTC. The supervisor replaced PID 308825 with PID 312912 at 02:24:15 and reported reachable at 02:24:20 with three registered connections. The public endpoint returned 200 at 02:25:07. Android returned to Connected by 02:28:12 without a reconnect tap, server restart or removal of the drop rules. Playback joins consecutive native recordings at six times normal speed, then holds the final Connected frame for 12 seconds. Brief recorder boundaries are the only gaps; no app interaction occurs during recovery.

The earlier 25bd5b1 Android recovery recording used cloudflared 2026.10.0. The before recording above also uses 2026.10.0, matching the reporter's version. The current recording verifies the dependency update rather than presenting that older video as a new build. None of these runs changes the shared router's actual IPv6 prefix. The existing client retry backoff is separate from host recovery, so the two-minute confirmation does not promise a two-minute total outage.

Shared paths

  • Android and iOS use the same mobile connection runtime in apps/mobile/src/lib/runtime.ts. The changed failure detector and restart run on the host, in apps/server/src/cloud/ConnectReachability.ts and ManagedEndpointRuntime.ts, regardless of which client is connected.
  • Web and desktop clients reach that same host-side recovery. apps/server/src/server.ts installs both layers. Desktop on Linux, macOS and Windows launches the same server entry through apps/desktop/src/app/DesktopEnvironment.ts; this change adds no platform branch or client code.
  • Provider execution is outside this change. This PR claims recovery of the host connection, not uninterrupted provider turns or replay of in-flight work.

Validation

At current head 4686872a642fd78a7e92fa58b5b31daaac3bafe5 on corex, cd apps/server && vp test run src/cloud/ConnectReachability.test.ts src/cloud/ManagedEndpointRuntime.test.ts passed all 31 tests. They cover the grace period, retry backoff, healthy reset, error-code handling, obsolete checks and process-ID/freshness guards. These tests use mocked network/process boundaries; the client recordings above supply the runtime evidence.

CI on the current head passed lint, build/typecheck and all eight server test shards. Independent source review found no remaining required changes. The CodeRabbit TCP-isolation finding is resolved. Macroscope requests human review because this changes production process management; it is not evidence of successful recovery.

Scope

Submitted under the focused obvious-bug exception. This adds the missing recovery trigger to the existing supervisor, without a new connection mode or setting. It does not touch bundling, scroll behavior, contracts or wire messages. The main risk is an unnecessary connector restart during a prolonged Cloudflare outage; the grace period, freshness guards and backoff limit it. Reverting restores the previous monitoring behavior without a data migration.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes the server’s existing tunnel-monitoring path to automatically kill and restart cloudflared after sustained Cloudflare failures, including new retry and backoff state. Although the behavior is guarded and well tested, the production process-management side effect and runtime behavior change warrant human review.

The runtime exposes connector process PIDs and restarts a connector only when its PID matches. Reachability checks track sustained no_connector results despite ready connections and request a restart after a delay.

Re-check the latest result inside the dead-connector update.

The latestRef gate runs once, before restartDeadConnector. A check that passes the gate can pause before it reaches deadConnectorRef. A newer check can then store its result and apply its reachable reset. The older check resumes and applies its stale no_connector result to the reset state. It starts a new streak at the current time, without a no_connector observation at that time. The next no_connector probe can then restart the connector after one probe interval, not after two minutes of continuous failure.

Skip superseded results inside the same synchronized update. A newer result always passes the gate and applies its own update, so skipping the older result is safe.

Fixed the ordering race from review #5644570633 in fefb5fb958ff8af32e9b580cb744cb2ba4ca9557. The retry-state update now rechecks the result order while holding its lock. A deterministic regression pauses an older check after it publishes, lets a newer healthy check reset recovery, and verifies that the older result cannot restore the failure streak. It fails on 542b7a6 and passes with the guard; vp run check:changed passes all 78 tests and the affected static checks on corex. Real IPv6/cloudflared/Cloudflare recovery remains unverified.

Add focused recovery-path tests.

ConnectReachability.test.ts contains only the successful two-minute restart test. It does not cover failed restart backoff, backoff doubling and capping, reachable or PID-change resets, or late out-of-order results. Add deterministic tests for these branches, using Deferred to synchronize the late-result case.

Add a runtime-level test for ManagedEndpointRuntime.restartConnector that verifies both PID mismatch rejection and kill() on a matching active child.

Skipping the CodeRabbit nitpick about more recovery-path tests. The maintainer asked to keep this PR to one regression test, and that test fails on main and passes here. The backoff and reset branches are small and visible in restartDeadConnector.

  • test(server): isolate tunnel recovery from external tcp probes355a1d2

Note

Written by gpt-6.1-sol on behalf of Maria

kept @shivamhwp's pid-guarded stale-connector restart and backoff, preserved all contributor commits, and merged current main (53896aea7614). head: 355a1d279b6f8e9df57a68fb0055869a4bb4d51c.

removed the changed UI hint and unrelated TCP-probe optimization. production changes now cover recovery only: 56 added lines in reachability and 24 additions/1 deletion in the runtime. extended the existing regression for backoff, healthy reset, and 502 exclusion; added one test in the existing runtime suite for absent/mismatched/stale pids and supervised replacement. corrected the test helper for current main's Effect diagnostics.

addressed CodeRabbit's network-isolation finding with a scoped socket mock in the existing regression. the real HTTP classification and recovery logic still run; no new production dependency was added.

verification:

  • original regression against main's implementation: failed with expected [] to deeply equal [1].
  • final blacksmith vp run check:changed: passed formatting, lint, both knip passes, GraphQL validation, scripts/server typechecks, and 75 tests across four existing files. one pre-existing guest-test lint warning remains.
  • runtime suite observed: pid 799 rejected without a kill; pid 800 killed; supervisor spawned pid 801; stale pid 800 rejected afterward. this uses synthetic child-process handles, not a live Cloudflare tunnel.
  • final-head GitHub CI: 21 successful checks, 10 skipped, zero failures or pending checks; merge state is clean. CodeRabbit marks the TCP finding addressed; its final status is passing with review paused.
  • two independent GPT-6.1-Sol source reviews approved this exact final head with no blocking code findings, including one follow-up round.

unverified and blocking release verification: real cloudflared/Cloudflare recovery after an IPv6 prefix change. this VM has no configured Connect tunnel or cloudflared binary. the existing screenshots demonstrate synthetic recovery only. no UI changes remain, so no new UI evidence is claimed. Macroscope still requires human approval for the production process-lifecycle change.

known limits: the unchanged five-minute poll means recovery normally takes roughly 5–10 minutes, rather than exactly two. backoff capping, failed kills, and late concurrent results were source-reviewed but do not gain additional tests in this focused pass.

Live end-to-end test. This ran the real ManagedEndpointRuntime and ConnectReachability against real cloudflared 2026.10.0 on a Cloudflare tunnel over HTTP/2 and IPv6. That's the same version and transport as #24936. The two stubs were the secret store and the RelayClient path.

To reproduce the dead prefix from the issue, tc on the host silently dropped both directions of cloudflared's live tunnel sockets. Only those source ports were dropped, so new connections still went through. Nothing triggered a check by hand; every check came from the services' own schedule.

Base (72dde22b6f): the bug reproduces.

112:54:28 T3 Connect is reachable · 4 connections · HTTP2
212:55:21 sockets cut (502 from the edge)
312:59:21 ✕ NOT reachable { cause: 'no_connector' } ready=4
413:04:45 still ready=4 on the same 4 sockets, public URL 530, never restarted

This PR: it recovers on its own, twice.

112:55:21 sockets cut
212:56:57 ✕ NOT reachable { cause: 'no_connector' } ready=4
312:58:58 Cloudflare has no live connection from the relay client; restarting it { pid: 422835 }
412:59:06 Relay client process started { pid: 454037 }
512:59:12 T3 Connect is reachable · 4 connections · HTTP2 (public URL 200)
612:59:29 new sockets cut
713:01:58 ✕ NOT reachable { cause: 'no_connector' }
813:03:59 restarting it { pid: 454037 }
913:04:13 T3 Connect is reachable · 4 connections · HTTP2

Fixed by 25bd5b1d91. The live run found that Cloudflare sends its 530 page to Node's fetch as HTML (7.7 KB). The plain-text error code: parser never matched it, so a 1016 DNS error would also have restarted cloudflared. The probe now sends Accept: application/json; Cloudflare answers with "error_code":1033, which is parsed. The test mock now negotiates the format the way Cloudflare does, and the old parser fails it. check:changed passes.

  • installed dependencies and ran github/main (c3858bf1f7) first in /home/user/main. stopped its captured process group before starting the pr server.
  • installed dependencies at the exact pr head and ran the real dev server with isolated state at /home/user/t3code/.t3, web port 5733 and server port 13773.
  • used repo playwright 1.60.0 and /usr/bin/google-chrome. added the real /home/user/main git repo through the app's local-folder picker, selected codex gpt-6.1-sol, and sent two real turns through the composer. both replies rendered. the follow-up remained after reloading the client.
  • called the running server's authenticated POST /api/connect/reachability from that client. it returned http 200 with status: "unreachable", cause: "not_linked", consistent with cli status. this exercises the unlinked path, not stale-connector recovery.
  • blacksmith: cd apps/server && vp test run src/cloud/ConnectReachability.test.ts src/cloud/ManagedEndpointRuntime.test.ts passed all 31 tests across two files. these tests use synthetic boundaries and are supplementary evidence only. existing head ci reports 32 successful contexts, zero failing or pending.

Not verified

the changed behavior remains unverified. this vm has no authenticated t3 connect account, saved connect oauth credential, or managed tunnel. the normal main link flow reached device authorization, which requires an account sign-in unavailable here. consequently i could not reproduce the original stale-ready/http 530 bug on main or observe the pr restart a real managed connector. no quick tunnel, mocked credential, fixture, or demo data was substituted for that path.

also unverified: recovery after an actual ipv6 prefix replacement; the two-minute confirmation, retry backoff and healthy-result restart guards against a live cloudflare tunnel; remote provider turns during/after tunnel recovery; native desktop/mobile clients and macos/windows behavior. there is no visual code change requiring a before/after layout comparison.

result: unverifiable for the requested tunnel recovery, with the local neighboring checks above passing. this is not a release-verification sign-off.
