Recover desktop startup when connection-catalog.json is empty, truncated or NUL-filled. Today, its JSON parse error blocks catalog hydration, leaving healthy local/WSL environments and their threads inaccessible.

Preserve the exact bytes in .corrupt.<sha256> before allowing recovery. Back up the failed snapshot and recheck the active file so a concurrent replacement is left intact. Readable legacy credentials remain available; otherwise the client starts with an empty catalog. Backup failure still rejects the read. Unsupported schemas, I/O and encryption failures keep their existing behavior.

The writer already uses temporary-file replacement. This fixes recovery from existing damage; the original corruption trigger remains unproven. Related encryption/overwrite work: #20152, #23476, #23488.

Verified on macOS arm64: 77 focused tests and vp run check:changed pass. Windowless Electron 44.9.3 QA exercised the real store, native safeStorage and renderer catalog backend through a simulated IPC bridge, using an isolated mock keychain.

Runtime evidence
text
1Before: NUL fixture → renderer read fails; zero writes
2After: six concurrent reads → one byte-identical backup; hydration and save succeed
3Restart: saved connection decrypts in a fresh Electron process; no writes
4Failure: real backup rename failure leaves original intact; retry succeeds
5Guards: schema/base64/decryption failures preserved; legacy credentials recovered

Real OS keychains, native Windows/WSL, packaged UI/backend rediscovery, remote connections and physical power loss remain unverified. No live state or credentials were accessed.

Important

Remote connections absent from readable legacy records need re-adding. Recovery logs the backup path; it adds no UI notification.

Closes #4750.

Model/harness: GPT-6.1-Sol (high), Codex through T3 Code.

Walkthrough

The catalog store now reads catalog files as bytes, preserves malformed contents in digest-named backups, and handles legacy migration after missing or damaged files. Tests cover concurrent replacement, unsupported envelopes, read and decode errors, and backup write failures.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(desktop): recover unparseable connection catalogs" follows the conventional commit format and names the main change: the desktop app now recovers when connection-catalog.json cannot be parsed. The changeset adds backup of the corrupt bytes to a SHA-256-named file, rechecks the active file, and falls back to legacy credentials or an empty catalog. The title covers the primary change and omits secondary details such as the concurrent-replacement check and the write error type, which is acceptable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the problem, the change, verification, and a closing issue reference. It explains the problem (empty, truncated, or NUL-filled catalog blocks hydration), the fix (byte-exact backup to .corrupt.<sha256>, recheck of the active file, legacy credential fallback, and backup failure rejects the read), and the scope limits (unsupported schemas, I/O, and encryption failures keep existing behavior). Verification lists 77 focused tests, a check run, and Electron QA evidence, and it names unverified areas. The template's Scope and approval section is not filled in: it does not link a triaged issue with maintainer approval or explain a small-fix exemption. It mentions #4750 only as 'Closes #4750' and gives no approval comment, so this section is incomplete. The description is otherwise mostly complete, so the check passes with a note on that gap.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed production code and tests support [#4750]. They implement corrupt-catalog preservation, recovery, concurrent-replacement handling, legacy migration, error preservation, and backup-failure reporting. No unrelated production behavior is evident.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes satisfy the malformed-catalog recovery requirements in [#4750]. DesktopConnectionCatalogStore.ts preserves the failed bytes in a SHA-256 backup, rechecks the active file, recovers legacy records, and keeps backup failures as write errors. The base implementation already provides temporary-file replacement. The PR changes only the store and its tests. It does not surface catalog read failures in the UI, which [#4750] requires. The PR description also states that recovery adds no UI notification.

Resolution

Add a UI-facing catalog read-failure status or notification for failures that remain after store recovery. Add automated coverage for that behavior.

Pass through DesktopConnectionCatalogStoreWriteError instead of wrapping it again.

writeDocument already reports the exact failed operation and backup path. The current mapper replaces those fields with operation: "preserve-corrupt-catalog" and the active catalog path. The exposed error message therefore misidentifies a backup failure; the precise cause remains only in cause.

✅ Addressed in commit 837c6a8

Confirmed and fixed in 837c6a8ec3. Existing DesktopConnectionCatalogStoreWriteError values now pass through unchanged using Schema.is, so backup failures retain the failed operation and backup path. Other failures still receive the preservation context.

The existing real-filesystem rename-failure test now asserts replace-catalog-file, the backup path, and the exposed message. It failed before the fix and passes afterward, while still verifying that the original bytes survive and recovery can be retried. vp run check:changed passes, including all 10 catalog-store tests.

@Zheruel Thanks. The supplied code confirms that Schema.is preserves existing write errors, including the failed operation and backup path. Other errors still receive the preservation context.

The reported regression assertions cover the original concern. No further change is needed for this finding.

  • fix(desktop): preserve catalog backup failure details837c6a8

Note

Written by gpt-6.1-sol on behalf of Maria

thanks @Zheruel. your implementation correctly preserves the exact damaged bytes before recovery, keeps backup failures visible, recovers readable legacy credentials, and protects concurrent saves.

i rebuilt it as #25549 because this fork has maintainerCanModify: false. the replacement keeps those recovery behaviors and contributor credit. i compared both diffs: no recovery behavior or regression test was dropped. the read helper is flattened, the write-error schema predicate moves to module scope to satisfy current lint, and the malformed-byte fixtures now include truncated json.

blacksmith vp run check:changed passes, including all 10 catalog-store tests. native Electron renderer ipc rejects the NUL-filled file on main and recovers on the replacement, preserving one byte-identical backup across concurrent reads and supporting save/reread. runtime transcript. os keychains, Windows/WSL, macOS, and packaged client hydration/reconnection remain unverified. the native runtime used isolated Linux basic_text. this original pr stays open for maintainer review.

Thank you @Zheruel for this fix. Your recovery implementation and focused tests are carried forward in pingdotgg/t3code#25549, which reuses them and adds a recheck after the backup so a concurrent save wins, plus an Electron run through real IPC. Closing this one in favour of that PR; you're credited there.
