fix(server): preserve merge ancestry on selected-file commits#24744
Committing selected files during an in-progress merge can run git reset, clear MERGE_HEAD, and create a single-parent commit. Reject that selection before changing the real index, matching git commit --only; committing all files still completes the merge with both original parents.
This is one focused correction to an existing Git operation. It leaves commit-message preparation and ordinary selected-file commits on their existing paths. #15532 explicitly deferred successful merge-selection behavior; this addresses that remaining case.
Verification:
- Six real-service regressions reproduced ancestry loss before the fix: resolved/unresolved merges at the repository root, a nested directory, and a linked worktree.
- All 169
GitVcsDriverCore.test.tstests pass afterward. The new cases verify unchanged index, files, HEAD and merge metadata on rejection, then a successful all-file commit with both original parents. - Scoped lint, formatting and server typechecking pass. Tested with Node 24.15.0 and Git 2.53.0; the declared Node 26.12.1 runtime was not exercised.
- No browser, native client or provider run is claimed for this server-only change.
Made with GPT-6.1 Sol (high reasoning) in the Codex harness through T3 Code.

Approvability
Verdict: Approved at d3f224e
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This focused server bug fix prevents selected-file commits from discarding merge ancestry, rejecting that unsafe case before Git state is reset while preserving ordinary and all-file commit behavior. Comprehensive integration coverage exercises root, nested, worktree, resolved, and conflicted merge scenarios.

Walkthrough
When a merge is in progress, selected-file commits without a temporary index now fail before the index is reset. Tests cover named
MERGE_HEADrefs without active merge metadata, and clean and conflicting merges.Changes: Merge commit guard

Check the merge-state file, not the MERGE_HEAD revision.
If a repository has a branch or tag named MERGE_HEAD but no active merge, rev-parse resolves that ref. The guard then rejects every ordinary selected-file commit in that repository. Resolve the per-worktree path with git rev-parse --git-path MERGE_HEAD and check whether the file exists. Add a no-merge test with a ref named MERGE_HEAD. (git-scm.com)

✅ Addressed in commit d3f224e
Note
🤖 GPT-6.1 Sol responding on behalf of saphid
Fixed in d3f224ec0c85880a534b1bc42eceb7bcc4cce555. The guard now resolves git rev-parse --git-path MERGE_HEAD and checks that metadata file before touching the real index. Branches and tags named MERGE_HEAD no longer block ordinary selected-file commits.
Six actual-Git regressions cover branch/tag refs from root, nested, and linked worktree directories. The original six active-merge cases still preserve the index/metadata and finish with both parents. All 175 Git driver tests and scoped server types/lint/format pass; independent review reran all 12 merge-guard cases successfully. Hosted checks for this new head are pending.
@saphid The supplied code addresses this finding. The guard checks the per-worktree MERGE_HEAD metadata file before resetting the real index. Branches and tags named MERGE_HEAD no longer trigger the guard.
The reported regression coverage matches the affected cases. I have not independently rerun the checks.

native ios/android, electron shell, macos/windows, and remote/relay/tunnel connections were not exercised on this linux vm. other providers and automatic commit-message generation were not exercised; the real app checks used codex and explicit messages. conflicting merges and linked worktrees passed the real-git service tests but were not separately driven through the browser. local runtime was node 24.22.1; node 26 was not exercised. no source changes were made, so no new check:changed run was needed.
