fix(server): pause schedules when their destination is archived#24561

Problem

Archiving a thread left its bound schedules enabled. On current main, a 60-second timer failed twice with ThreadManagementThreadArchivedError and scheduled another attempt each time.

Change

Pause bound schedules through the archive effect and stop delivery when the destination is archived or deleted. Preserve the task and its archive reason, leave restored threads paused, and guard completion against tasks rebound while a dispatch is in flight. Timer tasks pause after five consecutive failed dispatches; success or explicit re-enable resets the private persisted counter. Existing schedule spacing applies, and webhook tasks remain exempt from transient-failure exhaustion. Thread deletion keeps its existing cleanup behavior.

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24519

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. GitCafe: #24519.

Verification

The archived/missing-destination regression failed before the fix: four dispatches where one was expected. The rebind regression also failed before its correction. Final focused run: vp test run apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/ScheduledTaskService.test.ts apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/ScheduledTaskService.webhook.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/runtimeLayer.test.ts — 148 passed. Implementation validation also passed server typechecking, touched-file lint, and scoped persistence/deletion tests. Both independent second-round reviews returned MERGE.

Server-only change; visual fixture matrix is empty. Real dev-server evidence uses isolated state on Linux, with browser RPC calls through the actual app:

BeforeAfter
Main transcript: archived destination, two failed attempts, task still enabled with another occurrence due. Base eea9895368.Final-head transcript: archive before first tick retains a disabled task with null next occurrence and unchanged run count beyond the former due time; unrelated task stays enabled; restore stays paused; explicit resume and manual dispatch succeed. Head d88fba1bb2.

Replay driver. Races and transient-failure exhaustion are covered by deterministic tests. Runtime proof checks manual dispatch after resume, rather than waiting for a subsequent automatic occurrence. Web, desktop, and mobile consume the existing task contract; no client rendering changes.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This change modifies the archive lifecycle and existing scheduler behavior by pausing tasks and automatically stopping repeated failures, with a new persisted failure counter. An unresolved high-severity race concerns stale task configuration during completion, so the production behavior warrants human review.

Walkthrough

Scheduled tasks now pause when their bound thread is archived or unavailable, and non-webhook tasks pause after five consecutive failures. Archiving queues a replay-safe effect that pauses tasks for the thread. A database migration adds the failure counter.

Archiving a thread queues a replay-safe effect. The effect worker calls resource cleanup, which pauses scheduled tasks bound to that thread. Tests verify that the task stays disabled after unarchiving and that unrelated tasks remain enabled.

A rebound schedule can pause prematurely after failures associated with its old destination. The affected case is narrow, but the task requires explicit re-enabling once paused.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed effect plumbing, resource cleanup method, scheduled-task persistence migration, failure-counter logic, tests, and MCP stub are directly connected to the scheduling and archive behavior in issue [#24519]. The server-only scope contains no unrelated client or visual changes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#24519] requires permanent handling for archived and deleted destinations, visible retirement state and history, dispatch-time state checks, and bounded transient delivery handling with backoff plus a finite policy. The PR adds archive pause effects, dispatch-time binding checks, no-replacement behavior, failure counting, and a five-failure pause for timer tasks. It leaves thread deletion on the existing cleanup path, which deletes bound tasks instead of preserving a disabled task with a retirement reason and history. The reported implementation also keeps existing schedule spacing and does not add retry backoff. Restore, success reset, explicit re-enable, and webhook exemption are covered by the supplied summary.

Resolution

Update deleted-destination cleanup to retain each bound task in a disabled terminal state with a visible retirement reason and retained delivery history, unless the issue requirement is intentionally revised. Add and test backoff for transient delivery failures while keeping delivery retries distinct from scheduled occurrences. Retain the existing race, restore, counter-reset, and webhook-exemption tests.

Reset failures on binding changes and guard completion atomically.

saveTask resets consecutive_failures only on a disabled-to-enabled transition. An enabled task can retain four failures when it is rebound, so its first failure at the new destination can pause it.

markCompleted also applies pause: failuresExhausted without checking the current binding. A rebind after findTask returns can therefore let an old run pause the new binding. Check the run binding in the atomic UPDATE before writing the failure count or applying the failure-limit pause.
