fix(server): Nushell worktree setup reports completion#24428

Problem

With Nushell as the server's default shell, creating a new worktree with a synchronous setup script hangs. The POSIX completion wrapper emits a literal $? instead of a numeric exit status, so even echo setup-ok never releases the waiting agent.

Change

Recognize nu and use a native Nushell completion wrapper. Successful scripts report 0, unhandled external failures retain their exit code, and internal errors report 1. A caught failure remains successful. Existing shell wrappers and contracts are unchanged.

Scope and approval

Fixes https://github.com/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/24423

Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. GitCafe: #24423.

Verification

  • Three focused real-Nushell regression tests pass on final head 001478848b: success, external exit 3, and recovered failure. The first two failed on main with null completion; recovered failure failed on the initial fix with 3 instead of 0. Red output, green output.
  • Focused lint on both changed files and server typecheck pass. Both independent full-diff reviewers returned MERGE after the recovered-failure correction.
  • Real isolated dev server and browser, Linux x86_64 with Nushell 0.116.1: imported synchronous Setup, created a new worktree, and submitted a message. Before: literal $?, setup remained running. After: numeric 0, setup finished and the agent replied OK. With bash -c 'exit 3': numeric 3, setup failed promptly and the agent did not start. Runtime evidence and fixture config.
  • Server-only completion change; render matrix is empty. Screenshots do not apply. Runtime evidence is from 06f9f93de3; the runner and tests are identical after merging current main into final head. Final-head focused tests: 3 passed, none skipped.
  • Limits: tests skip when Nushell is absent, including current CI. Final internal Nushell values such as echo setup-ok are not printed by the wrapper; explicit print and external output stream normally. Interactive reviewer probes covered internal errors, multiline scripts, trailing comments and Nushell 0.100.0. Nushell 0.95 error handling, idle terminal cleanup, async/settle flows, and other operating systems were not verified end to end.

Models: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1-Sol, through T3 Code (Claude Agent and Codex harnesses).

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This is a narrowly scoped Nushell completion bug fix with isolated regression coverage and limited production impact. The added test also introduces a file-level @effect-diagnostics nodeBuiltinImport:off suppression, so the change warrants human review.

Walkthrough

The setup script runner now recognizes Nushell and wraps setup commands with Nushell syntax to report completion status. Tests run against Nushell when it is installed and check successful, failing, and caught-failure commands.

Changes: Nushell setup completion

Layer / File(s)Summary
Shell detection, completion wrapper, and validation

The runner recognizes nu and uses a Nushell-specific wrapper to emit the completion sentinel with the command’s exit status. Nushell-backed tests check exit codes for successful, failing, and caught-failure commands.

Nushell users on current releases get correct setup completion reporting. Users on older Nushell releases may see setup not report completion, and the new tests can fail on hosts that have Nushell but no Bash. Both are bounded and can be addressed with a documented minimum version and a small test change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#24423] The issue requires Nushell support in the completion wrapper, including exit-status handling, so that synchronous setup scripts report a numeric exit code. The diff meets this requirement:

  • resolveCompletionShell now returns nu when the shell name is nu, so Nushell no longer falls through to the POSIX wrapper.
  • A new case "nu" in wrapCommandForCompletion runs the body inside try, then emits 0 on success. On a caught error it prints the rendered error to stderr and emits $e.exit_code? | default 1. This keeps external exit codes and maps internal errors to 1.
  • The sentinel line format (__T3_SETUP_DONE__token:<code>) matches the existing contract, so the completion parser is unchanged.
  • ProjectSetupScriptRunner.test.ts adds three tests that run the runner against a real nu binary when present: echo setup-ok gives 0, bash -c 'exit 3' gives 3, and a recovered failure gives 0.

The issue's alternative (a separate explicit shell for project scripts) is optional and is not required by this PR. Limits: I did not run the tests. The Nushell tests skip when nu is absent. Nushell 0.95 and other platforms are not verified. These limits do not show a missing requirement.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff against merge base d53873b6 changes two files only: apps/server/src/project/ProjectSetupScriptRunner.ts and the new apps/server/src/project/ProjectSetupScriptRunner.test.ts. Every change supports the Nushell completion wrapper fix. The type union gains nu, the shell resolver gains a nu branch, the wrapper gains a nu case, and the new test file covers that case. The POSIX, fish, and PowerShell branches are unchanged. No unrelated refactoring, documentation, or configuration changes appear in the diff.

Remove the Bash dependency from the Nushell tests.

hasNushell checks only for nu, so a host with Nushell but without Bash still runs both tests. The failure test then cannot validate exit code 3, and the recovery test catches a missing-command error instead of a command that exits 3. nu --no-config-file -c 'exit 3' uses Nushell's documented exit-code behavior.

134L48: Starting with new features, any cell path can now be used as the sort key in `sort-by` 🎉
135L49:
136L128: * Integers and floats are sorted/intermixed together based on their numerical value.
137L129: * Similarly, strings and globs will be intermixed, sorted lexicographically by their Unicode code points.
138L130: * If the `--natural`/`-n` flag is provided, then ints and floats will be sorted as strings. For example:
139L131:
140L132: `[1 &quot;4&quot; 3 &quot;2&quot;] | sort --natural
141L133: ╭───┬───╮
142L134: │ 0 │ 1 │
143L135: │ 1 │ 2 │
144L136: │ 2 │ 3 │
145L137: │ 3 │ 4 │
146L138: ╰───┴───╯`
147L139:
148L140: Otherwise, there were a few other minor changes to makes things more consistent:
149L141: * The `--insensitive`/`-i` flag was fixed, as case insensitive sorting did not occur in some cases.
150L142: * If a column cannot be found in a value, `sort-by` now errors instead of silently continuing.
151L143: * `sort` now errors if provided no input (to match the existing behavior of `sort-by`).
152L144: * `sort -v` no longer converts record values to strings. Instead, it uses the new standard sort order that `sort` and `sort-by` also do.
153L145: ## 【7†Handling stopped TUI applications [】【38†toc】]
154L146:
155L147: Thanks to 【41†@nome†github.com】 in 【42†#13741†github.com】, Nushell will no longer hang the terminal on unix systems if an external command is suspended (e.g., via `ctrl+z`). Instead, Nushell will now display a message and wait for any key press before bringing the suspended process back to the terminal foreground.
156L148:
157L149: # 【8†Changes [】【38†toc】]
158L150:
159L151: ## 【9†Additions [】【38†toc】]
160L152: ### 【10†`ls --threads` [】【38†toc】]
161L153:
162L154: With 【43†#13836†github.com】, an experimental `--threads` flag was added to `ls`. When provided, this flag makes `ls` use multiple threads (the exact number is currently undefined). In some cases, this significantly reduces the running time of `ls`.
163L155: ### 【11†Enhanced keybinding configuration [】【38†toc】]
164L156:
165L157: Support for kitty keyboard protocol modifiers.
166L158:
167L159: Thanks to 【44†@replcat†github.com】 in 【45†#13906†github.com】, keybindings in your config can now use any combination of the modifiers `shift`, `alt`, `ctrl`, `super`, `hyper`, and `meta`. Note that this requires your terminal to support the kitty keyboard protocol and for the config option `$env.config.use_kitty_protocol` to be set to `true`.
168L160:
169L161: Support for Unicode Code Points in Keycodes.
170L162: Starting from 【46†#14020†github.com】, users can now specify characters in the keycode field using their Unicode code points, in the format `char_uXXXX`, where `XXXX` is the hexadecimal Unicode code point. This provides greater flexibility when configuring keybindings in Nushell.
171L163: Specifying Unicode code points can help eliminate confusion when characters from different Unicode blocks look identical but have different code points. For example, by using `char_u0041` for the Latin `A`, `char_u0391` for the Greek `Α`, or `char_u0410` for the Cyrillic `А`, users can accurately define keybindings and avoid ambiguity in configurations.
172L164:
173L165: Key Feature:
174L166: The current implementation does not restrict the number of leading zeroes when specifying Unicode code points. For example, the character `A` can be represented as `char_u41,` `char_u0041`, or even `char_u000041`. However, it is recommended to use four hexadecimal digits (e.g., `char_u0041`) to improve readability and maintain a consistent format across different configurations. This recommendation follows the standard Unicode representation and helps prevent ambiguity.
175L167: Example usage:
176L168:
177L169: `$env.config = {
178L170: ...
179L171:

185<title>Stdout, Stderr, and Exit Codes | Nushell</title>
186<location>https://www.nushell.sh/book/stdout_stderr_exit_codes.html</location>
187<excerpt>citeturn0search1 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: today; Nushell tracks the last exit code of the recently completed external in one of two ways. ... `try { ^false | lines } catch {|err| $err.exit_code } ... `let text = &quot;hello\n world&quot; ... This external command behavior is in contrast to native Nushell expressions where the first command&#39;s stdout gets discarded:
188
189# Stdout, Stderr, and Exit Codes
190
191An important piece of interop between Nushell and external commands is working with the standard streams of data coming from the external.
192
193The first of these important streams is stdout.
194
195## Stdout
196
197Stdout is the way that most external apps will send data into the pipeline or to the screen. Data sent by an external app to its stdout is received by Nushell by default if it&#39;s part of a pipeline:
198
199 `nu -c &#39;print hello&#39; | str uppercase
200 # =&gt; HELLO`
201
202The above calls `nu` as an external command and redirects its stdout output stream into the pipeline. With this redirection, Nushell can then pass the data to the next command in the pipeline, here `str uppercase`.
203
204Without the pipeline, Nushell will not do any redirection, allowing it to print directly to the screen.
205
206## Stderr
207
208Another common stream that external applications often use to print error messages is stderr. By default, Nushell does not do any redirection of stderr, which means that by default it will print to the screen.
209
210But you can pass stderr to a command or a file if you want to:
211
212 * use `e&gt;|` to pass stderr to next command.
213 * use `e&gt; file` to redirect stderr to a file.
214 * use `do -i { cmd } | complete` to capture stderr message.
215
216## Exit Code
217
218Finally, external commands have an &quot;exit code&quot;. These codes help give a hint to the caller whether the command ran successfully.
219
220Nushell tracks the last exit code of the recently completed external in one of two ways. The first way is with the `LAST_EXIT_CODE` environment variable.
221
222 `nu -c &#39;print &quot;something went wrong&quot;; exit 3&#39;
223 # =&gt; something went wrong
224 $env.LAST_EXIT_CODE
225 # =&gt; 3`
226
227The second way is to use the `complete` command.
228
229A non-zero exit code is treated as an error. In a script, execution stops at the failing command, and the lines after it do not run. (In the REPL, type `$env.LAST_EXIT_CODE` on its own line after the failing command, as above.)
230
231This also applies to externals in the middle of a pipeline: if any external command in a pipeline fails, the whole pipeline fails, even when the commands after it succeed (similar to `set -o pipefail` in Bash). `$env.LAST_EXIT_CODE` is then set to the exit code of the rightmost command that failed. To handle a failure yourself, use `try`, whose `catch` closure receives an error record with an `exit_code` field, or capture the exit code with `complete`:
232
233 `try { ^false | lines } catch {|err| $err.exit_code }
234 # =&gt; 1`
235
236Tips
237
238This pipeline behavior is an opt-out experimental option named `pipefail`. To turn it off, start Nushell with `nu --experimental-options &#39;[pipefail=false]&#39;`.
239
240## Using the `complete` command
241
242The `complete` command allows you to run an external to completion, and gather the stdout, stderr, and exit code together in one record.
243
244If we try to run the external `cat` on a file that doesn&#39;t exist, we can see what `complete` does with the streams, including the redirected stderr:
245
246 `cat unknown.txt | complete
247 # =&gt; ╭───────────┬─────────────────────────────────────────────╮
248 # =&gt; │ stdout │ │
249 # =&gt; │ stderr │ cat: unknown.txt: No such file or directory │
250 # =&gt; │ │ │
251 # =&gt; │ exit_code │ 1 │
252 # =&gt; ╰───────────┴─────────────────────────────────────────────╯`
253
254The `stderr` value ends with a newline, which is why the table shows an empty line after …[truncated]</excerpt>

264### Prompt to write default config files [toc]
265
266After #13857, Nushell will only prompt the user to write the default config files if the default config directory does not exist. After the first prompt, the default config directory is created regardless of the response so that the user is not prompted again.
267
268### Mid-pipeline exit codes [toc]
269
270Some internal commands collect their input which could trigger the non-zero exit code error added in 0.98.0. After, #13899 this has been fixed and only the final command in a pipeline can trigger a non-zero exit code error if it is an external command.
271
272### Last exit code [toc]
273
274Fixed `$env.LAST_EXIT_CODE` not being set to `1` for errors not relating to external commands in #13954.

285# Pipelines
286
287## The pipeline special variable `$in`
288
289`$in` holds the input of the current pipeline stage. It can be used in an expression that is itself a stage of the pipeline, in a closure, or in the body of a custom command:
290
291 `[3 1 2] | sort | $in.0
292 # =&gt; 1
293 &quot;hello&quot; | $&quot;($in) world&quot;
294 # =&gt; hello world`
295
296See Pipeline Input and the Special `$in` Variable in the Book for details.
297
298## Best practices for pipeline commands
299
300## Interaction with Unix pipes
301
302The output of an external command is a stream of bytes, which Nushell passes on to the next command as it arrives. If any external command in a pipeline exits with a non-zero exit code, the pipeline fails, even when it is not the last command (like `set -o pipefail` in Bash). Use `try` to handle the failure, or `complete` to capture the exit code:
303
304 `try { ^false | lines } catch {|e| $e.exit_code }
305 # =&gt; 1`
306
307## Handling stdout and stderr
308
309You can handle stderr in multiple ways:

Declare a minimum Nushell version for the nu completion wrapper.

Nushell 0.99 fixed a bug where try did not catch errors assigned with let. The nu wrapper uses that assignment form. On earlier Nushell releases, a failing setup command can end the script before the sentinel print runs, so completion is not reported. The repository does not declare a minimum Nushell version. Require Nushell 0.99 or later for this path, or change the wrapper so it does not depend on the fixed behavior.
