fix(server): start empty-repository threads in the project checkout#24427
Problem
Starting a thread with New worktree in a repository created with git init and no commits fails during workspace preparation with ref_not_found, before the provider starts. Retry fails the same way.
Change
Normalize worktree requests to the project root when HEAD has no commit and the requested base cannot resolve. This reuses the existing root launch path before preparation is persisted. Resolvable bases retain worktree provisioning; repositories with a HEAD commit retain existing missing-ref and fetch errors.

GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/22017
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. Shared launch-service fix covers web, desktop, mobile, MCP and scheduled-task entry points without changing contracts or client rendering.
Verification
- Regression test first failed with
expected 'failed' to equal 'starting'; after the fix, all 40 launch-service tests pass. - After merging current main,
vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts apps/server/src/mcp: 264 tests passed in 25 files. Command, head SHA and output. - Scoped lint passed for the implementation; the test file retains one pre-existing warning. Server typecheck reports no errors.
- Two independent reviews found no blocking defects; final proof audit returned sufficient.
Real web dev app on Linux: before, an empty repository failed provisioning and Retry failed identically. After, New worktree completed with the provider replying OK; persisted preparation is root, worktreePath is null, HEAD remains unborn, and Git lists only the root checkout. A committed repository on the candidate still created a distinct worktree and completed with OK.

No render paths changed, so the visual matrix is empty. The following diagnostic snapshots supplement the runtime transcript (Chromium, 1280Γ800, Linux); they are not pixel-comparison evidence.

Runtime proof was captured at the reviewed candidate; the merge-main head has identical changed server source and test files. Native desktop and mobile were not separately launched. Existing failed threads and Retry after upgrading are not claimed fixed.

Issue
#22017requires a new worktree thread in a repository with no commits to start in the project folder.ThreadLaunchService.launchnow normalizes this request to{ type: "root" }whenHEADhas no commit and the requested base does not resolve. The regression test initializes an empty repository, launches a worktree request, and verifiesstartingstatus with a nullworktreePath. Resolvable bases and committed repositories retain worktree behavior throughworktreeBaseResolves.

Explanation
The changes stay within issue
#22017. The service changes implement base resolution and root fallback. The test changes update the Git mock and add the regression test required for the empty-repository launch. No unrelated product behavior, client rendering, or public contract changes appear in the reviewed diff.

Check that the remote branch exists before retaining the worktree strategy.
If an unborn repository has an origin remote but no requested branch, resolveWorktreeBaseRemote still returns a remote. This makes worktreeBaseResolves return true. Preparation can then receive no fetched base and fail when it creates the worktree, instead of launching in the project root. Check branch availability for this fallback decision. Keep remote-access errors visible. The new test uses startFromOrigin: false, so it does not cover this case. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
